Day 0: Setting Up a Safe Cybersecurity Learning Environment

A safe first cybersecurity practice session needs three things: Kali Linux running as a virtual machine on your current computer, a deliberately insecure training app as the target, and a containment plan that keeps that target away from systems you do not own.

A safe first practice session needs three things: Kali Linux running as a virtual machine on the computer you already have, a deliberately insecure training application as the target, and a containment plan that keeps that target away from anything you do not own or have written permission to test. You do not need a new computer to start, and Kali Linux is the tool environment, not the course. The learning comes from the exercises you run inside it.

Decide your starting constraints first

Three details change the right setup, and the official guidance does not choose them for you:

  • Host operating system. Windows, macOS, and Linux hosts take different virtualization paths, and each hypervisor has its own host requirements.
  • Available memory and disk. A virtual machine borrows from your host. Your host still needs enough RAM to run its own applications while the guest is running.
  • Learning focus. Web application testing, network analysis, and defensive monitoring each lean on different tools and different targets. A web-focused first session is the simplest place to begin, and the examples below assume it.

Choose a virtualization route

Kali Linux’s documentation covers installing Kali as a guest virtual machine and lists dedicated paths for VMware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V, UTM, and QEMU/LibVirt. The documentation index lists these options but does not rank them, so the table below only sets out what to check for each one.

Option (as listed in Kali’s virtualization documentation) Host operating system support What to verify before you commit
VMware Not stated in the Kali index Whether your VMware product and licence fit your host and whether it offers snapshots on your edition
VirtualBox Not stated in the Kali index Host compatibility, and whether your machine’s virtualization features are enabled in firmware
Hyper-V Not stated in the Kali index Whether Hyper-V is available on your Windows edition, and whether it conflicts with other virtualization software you use
UTM Not stated in the Kali index Host compatibility on your Mac, and the guest architecture you select
QEMU/LibVirt Not stated in the Kali index Comfort with Linux-based virtualization management and its networking setup

Pick the hypervisor that runs on your host and that you are willing to maintain. A beginner who installs one tool and learns its snapshot and network settings will get further than one who switches tools halfway through.

Budget guest resources realistically

Kali’s installation guide, updated in 2025, gives the following minimums and recommendations. They describe the guest, not your computer as a whole.

Configuration Guest RAM Guest disk Qualification
Default Xfce desktop with the kali-linux-default metapackage At least 2 GB At least 20 GB The minimum stated for a graphical desktop lab
Resource-intensive applications such as Burp Suite At least 8 GB recommended Not stated Recommendation for heavier tools, not a requirement for the default desktop
Minimal no-desktop SSH server 128 MB (512 MB recommended) 2 GB Not a practical lab configuration; listed here only to explain why published minimums vary so widely

Do not use the smallest figure to judge a graphical practice setup. If your host has limited memory, start with the default desktop and close other heavy applications while the guest runs. Add memory only when a specific tool you plan to use asks for it.

Install Kali as a virtual machine

Kali’s installer guide demonstrates a fresh guest installation. For a first session, this is the safer route, because the installer works inside a virtual disk and does not touch your host’s drives.

  1. Install your chosen hypervisor and confirm it starts a test virtual machine on your host.
  2. Download the Kali image or installer media from Kali’s official download pages, and check the published checksum before you use the file.
  3. Create a new virtual machine in the hypervisor. Allocate the guest RAM and disk from the table above, and leave room on the host for its own needs.
  4. Attach the Kali image or installer media to the virtual machine, then boot it and follow the installer steps in Kali’s installation guide.
  5. If the installer path you chose fails to start, check the guide for that path. Kali notes that Secure Boot must be disabled for the installer kernel in the path it describes. Change firmware settings only if your chosen path requires it.
  6. Log in, update the guest, and confirm the desktop starts before you install anything else.

Why not install Kali directly on your disk?

Kali’s guide also describes installing directly to a physical disk, and it warns that this path can wipe data on the destination disk. A USB flash drive is needed only for that installer-media route; a guest installation does not require one. If you do choose direct installation later, back up important files and confirm the target disk before you start.

Pick practice targets built for training

A practice target should be an application that is intentionally vulnerable, so that finding and exploiting its weaknesses is the lesson. Two widely used options come from the OWASP project, which describes its learning resources as free and open to everyone.

OWASP Juice Shop

OWASP Juice Shop is a deliberately insecure web application used for training, demonstrations, and capture-the-flag events. Its challenges span the OWASP Top Ten and other application flaws, and the application tracks your progress on a scoreboard. It suits a beginner who wants guided web testing goals with clear feedback.

  • Comprehensive Forensic for Kids Kit: Great as a girls detective kit and boys detective kit alike, this evidence kit for kids includes all necessary supplies for forensics experiments, plus a full-color guide book (Ages 8 and up)

OWASP WebGoat

OWASP WebGoat is an interactive teaching application for vulnerabilities common in Java-based applications. It suits a learner who wants to understand how a flaw works inside application code, not only how to find it from outside. Choose it once you are comfortable with the basics, or run it alongside Juice Shop for a different angle.

Keep targets contained

Containment is the main safety control in a home lab. The principle is simple: deliberately vulnerable applications stay inside your local, controlled environment, and real systems are tested only with explicit permission.

  • Disconnect from the Internet while running WebGoat. The project states: “You should disconnect from the Internet while using this program.” It also describes the running application as extremely vulnerable and binds it to localhost by default, which limits exposure to other devices.
  • Check your virtual network mode. The guidance above does not establish that any particular virtual network mode gives perfect isolation. Read your hypervisor’s network documentation, confirm which networks the Kali guest and the target can reach, and do not assume a mode is private until you have checked it.
  • Do not point tools at public addresses. Scanning or attacking systems you do not own, or do not have written authorization to test, is not practice. Keep every target address inside your own lab.

Make the setup repeatable

After the guest works and your first target runs, take a clean snapshot of the virtual machine if your hypervisor offers that feature. Snapshots are a practical recommendation rather than a guaranteed feature of every hypervisor, so check that yours supports them. When an exercise breaks the system or leaves it in an odd state, you can return to the baseline instead of reinstalling.

  • Bootable Kali Linux Environment – No installation required
  • Large Linux Command Reference Mousepad (Desk Size)
  • Ideal for Cybersecurity Labs & Training
  • Plug & Boot on Compatible Systems
  • Complete 2-Item Bundle – Functional & Practical

Keep a short setup log with the host operating system, hypervisor and version, Kali version, the target application and version, and the network mode you used. When you return to a lab after a break, that log shows what changed.

Your first session

Start the target, confirm that it responds from the Kali guest, and open its challenge list. Pick one challenge, read its description, and work it out before looking up a walkthrough. Note what you tried, what failed, and what the application confirmed. Shut the target down when you finish, and take a snapshot only once the environment is in a state you want to keep.

The Bottom Line

For a beginner’s first session, install Kali Linux as a guest virtual machine on your existing computer, budget the guest at no less than 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk for the default desktop, and practice only against deliberately insecure targets such as Juice Shop or WebGoat that stay inside your own network. Verify your hypervisor’s network mode and snapshot support before you begin, because the isolation and recovery of this setup depend on them.
