A missing NVMe device points toward drive detection or connection; “Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed” can indicate a boot-partition problem. Try non-destructive checks before re-imaging, which can erase data.
Check your model before following a repair guide: the cited iFixit SSD replacement guide covers the LCD Steam Deck and specifies a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. OLED owners should use the separate OLED guide. Physical installation is only part of the job; software setup may also be required. iFixit’s LCD SSD replacement guide points to Valve’s recovery instructions.
First, identify what failed
These symptoms point to different parts of the upgrade. The distinction matters: reinstalling SteamOS will not fix a drive that the recovery environment cannot detect, while opening the Deck may be unnecessary if the drive is present and only its boot configuration is damaged.
| What you see | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The boot menu displays “Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed” | Boot-partition or startup configuration. The error does not, by itself, prove the SSD has failed. |
| SteamOS recovery cannot find an internal NVMe device | Drive detection, seating, or drive health before the OS installation. |
| The drive appears, but SteamOS hangs or fails to start | Boot configuration and recovery options before concluding the new SSD is defective. |
| Storage is still low or files are inaccessible | Confirm which drive and installation are active; a persistently full drive can cause operational problems. |
A user-submitted SteamOS GitHub issue describes intermittent boot and SSD detection problems, including recovery reporting no NVMe device. It is an individual report, not evidence that this is a common or confirmed Steam Deck defect.

Do low-risk checks before opening the Deck
- Force a restart. Hold the power button for 10 seconds, then try starting the Deck again.
- Reset power and disconnect accessories. Unplug docks and peripherals, then retry with the Deck connected directly to its charger.
- Separate a boot failure from a power failure. Note whether the screen is black, stuck during startup, or showing a boot menu or error. These checks are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
- Check whether recovery can see the internal drive. This helps distinguish a software startup problem from an SSD detection problem.
iFixit’s Steam Deck Not Booting troubleshooting guide, last updated February 21, 2024, describes these checks and the repair paths below.
Fix “Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed” without re-imaging first
If the Deck reaches its boot menu and displays this message, iFixit describes trying to start SteamOS from its EFI file. This can help when the boot partition is damaged but the drive and installation are still present.
- Hold Volume Up and press Power to open the boot menu.
- Select Boot From File.
- Open the EFI partition’s SteamOS folder and select the EFI file to try starting the system.
- If SteamOS starts, change the SteamOS update channel and restart; iFixit says this may rebuild the boot partition.
Menu names or behavior may differ as software changes. If these steps do not match your Deck, follow Valve’s current SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting instructions rather than guessing at a boot option.

Use SteamOS recovery carefully
Valve lists recovery options for SteamOS, but they are not interchangeable. Choose the least destructive option that fits the problem and read its current description on Valve’s support page before proceeding. In particular, Valve’s Install / Re-image / Repair SteamOS option wipes device data. Back up or otherwise preserve anything important before selecting a data-erasing operation.
If the recovery environment does not detect the internal NVMe drive, an OS reinstall is unlikely to address the underlying detection problem. Check the physical connection and drive health instead.
Reseat the SSD if recovery cannot detect it
A poorly seated drive is one possible explanation after an internal repair or a hard drop. iFixit describes a user report in which reseating restored detection, but that anecdote is not proof that reseating will fix every case. Opening a Steam Deck carries repair risks; use the guide for your exact model, and stop if you are unsure about the procedure.

Prepare safely
- Confirm whether the Deck is LCD or OLED and use the corresponding model-specific guide; the LCD and OLED procedures differ.
- Power off and unplug the Deck, discharge the battery below 25%, and consider enabling BIOS battery storage mode as the guide advises.
- Remove the microSD card before lifting the case cover; it can snap if left inserted during removal.
- Take ESD precautions and keep track of screws and shielding.
For the LCD model, iFixit’s replacement guide shows inserting the SSD at a shallow angle and securing it horizontally with the SSD screw. Do not assume that the same steps apply to an OLED model.
Check health if reseating does not resolve the problem
iFixit describes running a SMART test from the recovery environment’s Terminal With Repair Tools:
sudo smartctl -t long -a /dev/nvme0n1
The command may prompt for a password. A SMART result can inform diagnosis, but iFixit cautions that it is not definitive: a passing result does not prove the SSD, connection, or firmware is fault-free. If you cannot interpret the output, ask a qualified repair professional rather than diagnosing the drive from one metric.

What to expect after re-imaging
After re-imaging, the buttons, thumbsticks, or touchpads may initially fail to register during setup. iFixit says to use the touchscreen through initial SteamOS setup, let updates download, and restart; it reports that controls should return after the restart. This is reported behavior, not a guaranteed outcome for every Deck.
Check compatibility before buying another SSD
The cited iFixit guide supports a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD for the LCD Steam Deck, but form factor alone does not guarantee compatibility. The guide does not endorse a particular brand, capacity, or product listing. Before buying, verify the exact drive specifications and the compatibility of the intended Deck model using authoritative product information.
Quick Recap
- Match the guide to the Deck: LCD and OLED owners need the appropriate model-specific instructions.
- Verify the 2230 physical dimensions, single-sided construction, and supported NVMe interface against the drive maker’s specifications.
- Check the capacity, warranty, and seller reliability for the actual product and your needs; do not infer those details from the form factor.
- Confirm how the SSD shielding is handled during replacement and whether it can be reused or must be replaced.
