If you know how to take a turn in Baldur’s Gate 3 but still find your attacks missing or your party losing momentum, focus on four things: what each action costs, who acts next, what the attack preview says, and where your characters stand. BG3 is turn-based and draws on D&D 5e, but its video-game implementation has details of its own. This guide separates the game’s mechanics from tabletop comparison rules and shows how to turn them into practical choices.
What can you do on a turn?
Think of your turn as a set of separate resources, not as one undifferentiated chance to act. BG3 combat proceeds in initiative order, and the game’s official overview describes it as turn-based combat with team-based initiative. Larian’s BG3 overview
- Action: Many attacks and abilities use your action. Check the ability’s cost in the current game UI.
- Bonus action: Available when a feature or ability authorizes one. It is not an automatic second action every turn.
- Movement: Use it to reach a target, cover, or higher ground; moving can change what attacks are in range and what modifiers apply.
- Reaction: A response to a trigger, rather than another action you can freely take whenever you like on your turn.
The 2014 D&D Basic Rules provide a useful comparison: a tabletop character can move and take one action, a bonus action requires an ability that grants it, and a reaction responds to a trigger. Those are tabletop rules, not a promise that every interaction works identically in BG3. D&D 2014 Basic Rules: Combat
When you are deciding between an attack, spell, or setup ability, start with its displayed cost. The ability description and current in-game UI are the relevant guide for your character—not an assumption imported from tabletop play.

How initiative and shared turns create opportunities
BG3 initiative is determined by a d4 plus the character’s Dexterity modifier, according to the community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s initiative page. Higher initiative acts earlier. When characters controlled by the same player share an initiative result, they can coordinate their turn resources in any order rather than being locked into a rigid sequence.
Use that flexibility to set up a better attack. For example, one character may apply an effect that changes a target’s position or condition before a second character attacks. This creates a tactical opportunity, not a guaranteed damage bonus: the follow-up still depends on its own range, roll, and modifiers.
What advantage and disadvantage actually mean
Advantage and disadvantage affect an attack roll; neither means an attack automatically hits or misses. BG3 can apply them for different reasons, including class features, conditions, spells, items, range, or nearby threats. The community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s advantage page includes examples such as Reckless Attack, attacks against a prone target at close range, and ranged attacks made while threatened. This is a selection of examples, not a permanent exhaustive list.

For example, the wiki describes attacks against a prone creature as having advantage when the attacker is within 3 m (10 ft). Some ranged attacks can have disadvantage when made while threatened or outside a weapon’s normal range. These details can depend on the particular attack and circumstances, so do not rely on a general rule of thumb when the game can show you the result.
Check the attack preview before committing
- Select the attack or ability you are considering.
- Inspect the target’s displayed hit chance and modifiers before confirming.
- If the result is worse than expected, check for disadvantage, distance, threats, or a condition affecting either combatant.
- Consider changing the target, moving to a different position, or choosing another ability, then inspect the preview again.
The preview is more useful than guessing from a single cause: the same low hit chance can reflect different combinations of attack modifiers and situational effects.
How high ground, low ground, and range affect attacks
Elevation is more than scenery. The community-maintained BG3 Wiki documents a +2 attack-roll modifier when the attacker is about 2.5 m (8 ft) above the target, and a -2 modifier when about that far below. It also says elevation can extend the horizontal reach of most ranged abilities when targeting enemies below. BG3 Wiki: Attacks

The same source says the Sharpshooter feat removes the low-ground penalty for ranged weapon attacks. High ground does not guarantee an advantage on every attack, and not every elevated position meets the relevant conditions. The wiki also notes that high-ground rules can apply to melee attack rolls, though ordinary melee range means the vertical separation rarely matters; long-range melee spell attacks and other exceptions may behave differently.
Before spending an attack, look at the target preview after moving. A change in height or distance may alter range or modifiers, and the UI lets you evaluate the specific shot rather than assuming that a visible ledge always helps.

How to prepare before combat begins
Stealth and positioning can improve your opening situation, but they do not guarantee that every first attack causes surprise or a critical hit. In an official developer article about combat and stealth, Larian describes using sneaking to position the party before initiative and notes that light and darkness affect stealth. It also discusses verticality, shove, and using turn-based mode during exploration to track enemy movement or prepare around hazards. Larian Studios: “A little about combat and stealth”

- Observe: Use turn-based mode during exploration when you need to track movement or time your approach around a hazard.
- Position: Move party members toward useful cover, routes, or elevations before combat starts, where the situation allows.
- Check stealth conditions: Light and darkness can matter. Do not assume that sneaking alone ensures an undetected approach.
- Begin the encounter: Be ready to adapt once initiative begins; the opening outcome depends on the encounter and game rules.
Larian’s developer article puts the idea plainly: “Sneaking is a really useful technique for positioning your party prior to the initiative roll, ensuring you get the first strike.” Treat that as developer guidance about preparation, not a guarantee about the outcome of every encounter.
A quick way to choose between tactical options
When several moves are available, compare them on the same practical questions before acting:
Quick Recap
- Action cost: Does it use an action, bonus action, movement, reaction, or a combination? Check the current ability in the game.
- Hit chance and risk: What modifiers appear for this target, and will approaching expose the character to incoming attacks?
- Position and reach: Will elevation, distance, or an alternate route improve the attack or put the target in reach?
- Timing: Which combatant acts next, and can characters sharing initiative coordinate their turns?
- Target effect: Does the ability damage, restrain, knock prone, or otherwise change the target’s ability to act? Read the ability’s in-game description rather than assuming tabletop wording applies.
