You can host your own Git repository with a lightweight bare repository accessed over SSH, or choose GitLab when you also need a browser interface and project-management tools. The first is a remote place to push and clone Git history; the second adds features such as code review, issue tracking, wikis, and CI. The Linux Foundation’s Classic SysAdmin guide, published May 7, 2022, demonstrates both approaches, but its worked setup uses Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and should be treated as historical rather than current installation guidance.
What does running your own Git server mean?
Git itself records project history in repositories. A server gives you a remote location where you and collaborators can push and retrieve that history. In the simplest arrangement, the server hosts a bare repository: it stores Git data without a checked-out working copy and is accessed through SSH. You use Git commands on your own computer to commit changes, push them to the remote, and clone or pull changes from it.
“Your own server” describes who operates the Git service, not necessarily where the machine is located. The Linux Foundation tutorial used a virtual private server (VPS); an organization could instead use a suitable server environment it controls. In either case, self-hosting gives you control over the host while making you responsible for maintaining that environment.
Should you use a bare Git repository or GitLab?
| Consideration | Bare repository over SSH | GitLab |
|---|---|---|
| What it provides | A remote repository for Git history, accessed with Git commands. | A web-based project interface alongside repository collaboration and project-management features. |
| Setup and administration | A relatively lightweight service arrangement: provision a host, configure Git and SSH access, and create repositories. You maintain the host and access setup. | More service to deploy and administer than a bare repository. You also maintain the GitLab installation and its host. |
| Browser interface and project tools | No project browser or issue tracker is implied by the bare repository itself. | The guide describes repository management, code review, issue tracking, activity feeds, wikis, and CI. |
| Best fit | People who mainly need a private remote for push, pull, and clone and are comfortable working in the command line. | Teams that need a web interface and want repository collaboration integrated with project tools. |
The guide does not establish a current cost, performance, or capacity advantage for either option. Choose based on the workflow you need and the effort you can take on to operate it, rather than its 2022 pricing or product comparisons.

How does a bare Git server work?
The Linux Foundation guide outlines a straightforward SSH-based workflow. An administrator installs Git on the local and remote machines, creates a dedicated git user, configures public-key SSH access, creates a project directory on the server, and initializes that directory as a bare repository with git init --bare. A developer initializes or uses a local repository, commits project files, adds the remote, and pushes. A collaborator clones the remote and can push changes back.
The essential idea is that developers work in their own local repositories; the server stores the shared repository history. SSH provides the connection and access mechanism. The guide’s example contains inconsistent paths and an awkwardly rendered remote address, so those fragments should not be copied as commands. Its tutorial also targets Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Check current operating-system, Git, SSH, and account-management documentation before configuring a production server.

- MINI PC COMPUTER OFFICE BUSINESS PERSONAL - GMKtec Nucbox G11 PLUS Series is equipped with the Ryzen 5 3500U, a 64-bit quad-core mid-range performance x86 mobile microprocessor. This processor is based on AMD's Zen+ microarchitecture and is fabricated on a 12 nm process. The 3500U operates at a base frequency of 2.1 GHz with a TDP of 15 W and a Boost frequency of 3.7 GHz. This APU supports up to 32 GB of dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory and incorporates Radeon Vega 8 Graphics operating at up to 1.2 GHz. 20% Multi-core Performance increase over previous Ryzen 3 models such as 4300U. 35% performance increase over the Intel N-series N95/N97/N150.
- AMD RADEON GRAPHICS 1.2GHz - this powerful mini computer with 480% Faster Integrated Graphics: The built-in AMD Radeon Graphics GPU delivers a staggering 480% higher 3DMark Time Spy performance than the Intel N150's UHD graphics. Powered by dedicated shader cores clocked at 1.2GHz, it dramatically outperforms the N150 for intensive visual tasks and surpasses the 4300U's iGPU by 21% in raw computational throughput. With support for triple independent 4K displays, H.265/HEVC encoding, and modern APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan, this GPU turns the R2514 into a true multimedia powerhouse for professional edge computing, industrial HMI, or high-end digital signage station.
- DUAL CHANNEL 16GB RAM MEMORY - The R2514 platform supports dual-channel DDR4 memory (2×8GB; Total 16GB), effectively doubling the data pathway between RAM and the processor compared to a single 16GB stick used in N150 or 4300U systems. With dual-channel, the GPU experiences zero memory bottlenecks, resulting in significantly higher frame rates (up to 30% improvement in gaming scenarios), smoother 4K video playback, and faster application responsiveness—especially in professional workloads like CAD viewing, real-time data visualization, and multitasking across multiple displays.
- DUAL NIC 2.5GBE ETHERNET - The G11 mini PC with dual 2.5GbE ports, you can transform it into a high-speed, all-in-one networking hub. This setup enables it to function as a professional-grade firewall and router (using software like pfSense/OPNsense) for unbeatable network security and ad-blocking, a blazing-fast Network Attached Storage (NAS) server, and a compact server for a home lab running virtual machines and containers (with Proxmox). It can also be used to create a dedicated, isolated network for IoT devices and security cameras or as a compact VPN server for secure remote access.
- UNLEASH RAW PERFORMANCE MODE 35W - Dominate demanding tasks with the AMD Ryzen Embedded R2514 processor. When switched to Performance Mode in the BIOS (press "Esc" key repeatedly during boot, save then exit), this mini PC delivers superior multi-core processing power, significantly outperforming Intel N-series chips in CPU-intensive applications, multitasking, and creative workloads.
When is GitLab the better choice?
Choose GitLab if a remote repository alone is not enough. The guide presents it as the route for users who want a graphical project interface and collaboration tools. Its listed functions include code review, issue tracking, activity feeds, wikis, and CI, in addition to repository management.
Those features bring a larger administration commitment than hosting a bare repository. You must operate the GitLab service as well as its host. The Linux Foundation page’s installation directions use an old Ubuntu release and a version-pinned package; they are historical, not a safe present-day deployment procedure. Follow current GitLab installation and security guidance for the edition and environment you intend to run. Do not reuse the guide’s example default password.

What should you decide before self-hosting?
- Collaboration needs: If your team only needs Git history shared through push and clone, a bare SSH repository may be sufficient. If it needs browser-based review and project tracking, consider GitLab.
- Hosting location: Decide which server environment suits your organization. The guide’s VPS example is one option, not a requirement or current provider recommendation.
- Operational responsibility: Plan who will maintain the host, access controls, and—if applicable—the GitLab service. Self-hosting provides control but does not remove the work of keeping the environment maintained.
- Current setup instructions: Treat the guide’s Ubuntu version, package details, installation path, defaults, and commercial comparisons as dated. Verify current procedures rather than treating its commands as copy-and-paste deployment instructions.
