2 Useful BCDEdit Options: Set the Boot Menu Timeout and Default

Use BCDEdit’s /timeout option to set the boot-menu wait in seconds and /default to select the entry Windows starts when the wait expires.

Use bcdedit /timeout to set how many seconds Windows Boot Manager waits, and bcdedit /default to choose which boot entry it selects when that wait ends. The options work together: one controls the delay; the other controls the destination.

What these BCDEdit options change

BCDEdit is a built-in Windows command-line tool for managing the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store, which describes boot applications and their settings. Microsoft requires administrative privileges to modify the store. See Microsoft’s bcdedit command reference.

Option Value supplied Effect
/timeout Number of seconds Sets how long Boot Manager waits before selecting the default entry.
/default Boot-entry identifier Sets which entry Boot Manager selects when the timeout expires.

These are complementary settings, not alternatives. Microsoft documents their syntax and behavior in its /timeout and /default references.

Before changing the boot configuration

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator. BCDEdit changes require elevated privileges.
  2. Inspect the entries on this PC by running bcdedit /enum. Identify the entry you intend to use rather than copying a GUID from an example. Microsoft explains identifiers in Boot Options Identifiers.
  3. Distinguish {current}, the operating system entry currently running, from {default}, the boot manager’s default application entry. Those identifiers can refer to different concepts; consult Microsoft’s guidance on changing the default boot entry.

Set how long the boot menu waits with /timeout

Command

Run bcdedit /timeout <seconds>, replacing <seconds> with the desired wait duration. For example, bcdedit /timeout 30 sets the wait to 30 seconds, as shown in Microsoft’s /timeout documentation.

Choose a useful interval

A shorter interval gets past the menu sooner; a longer interval gives you more time to select another listed entry. Microsoft’s boot-options editing guidance describes shortening the wait for quicker test cycles or lengthening it when more time is needed to choose an entry.

Choose the automatic boot entry with /default

Command

Run bcdedit /default <ID>, replacing <ID> with the identifier for the entry you want Boot Manager to select when the timeout expires. First inspect the local entries with bcdedit /enum; identifiers vary by system. Microsoft’s example uses a GUID in braces, but that example is not a universal ID for your PC. See the /default command reference and identifier list.

Check the identifier before running the command

Use the ID that corresponds to the intended boot entry in your own listing. In particular, do not assume {current} and {default} mean the same thing: the former identifies the currently running operating system entry, while the latter identifies the boot manager’s default application entry.

Apply changes and account for safeguards

  • After modifying BCD, perform a normal shutdown and reboot so the changes are flushed to disk, as stated in Microsoft’s BCDEdit command reference.
  • BitLocker may need to be suspended, and Secure Boot may need to be disabled, before setting some BCDEdit options. This depends on the system and option; do not turn either off automatically. Check Microsoft’s boot-options editing guidance for the applicable context.
  • Microsoft warns specifically that “Changing some boot entry options by using the BCDEdit /set command could make your computer inoperable.” That caution is about /set; it is not a claim that /timeout or /default always cause that outcome. Review Microsoft’s BCDEdit safety guidance before making broader boot-entry changes.

If you would rather not edit boot configuration from the command line, Microsoft’s boot-options editing guidance points to System Configuration (MSConfig) as an alternative for changing boot settings.
