Activating ActiveX Controls with JavaScript: What Still Works

ActiveX is not supported in ordinary modern browsers. Legacy JavaScript access requires a compatible IE host, an installed control, exposed automation interfaces, and permissive site policy.

JavaScript can interact with an ActiveX control only when the page runs in a compatible, configured Internet Explorer host and the control is installed and permitted to run. Today, Microsoft’s compatibility option is Edge in IE mode; ordinary Edge mode and other modern browsers do not provide general ActiveX support.

Where JavaScript can use ActiveX

ActiveX is a legacy Windows COM component model, not a standard browser JavaScript feature. Historically, Internet Explorer pages could host a control in an HTML <object> element and script its exposed methods and properties. Microsoft also documents creating certain IE-hosted COM objects from script with new ActiveXObject(...). Both approaches depend on the host, the installed control, and its security and automation interfaces.

Microsoft identifies Edge IE mode as the compatibility path for some enterprise legacy sites. IE mode uses IE11 rendering behavior and supports ActiveX, but Microsoft cautions that some IE-dependent content may still fail to render correctly. This support does not apply to ordinary Chromium-mode Edge. Internet Explorer 11 desktop app retirement began June 15, 2022; IE mode remains a managed compatibility feature, with availability and policy dependent on the Windows edition and device management configuration. How legacy page-level scripting works

A page may embed a control with <object>, then call members exposed by that particular control. The following is an illustrative sketch, not tested or portable code:

<object id="legacyControl" classid="CLSID:YOUR-CONTROL-CLSID"></object>
<script>
  // Requires a compatible, configured IE host and an exposed method.
  legacyControl.SomeMethod();

  // Legacy IE-specific COM activation; the ProgID must be installed
  // and permitted by host security policy.
  // var automationObject = new ActiveXObject("Vendor.Component");
</script>

Replace the example CLSID, ProgID, method, and any event wiring with the values and instructions from the control vendor. The control must expose automation members for script access. Event handling is also control-specific and may depend on interfaces such as IProvideClassInfo or IProvideClassInfo2. Check these gates when a control does not load

  1. Verify the host and site configuration. Confirm the page is actually opened in Edge IE mode, not normal Edge mode. For managed environments, check that the site is included in the Enterprise Mode site list where required, then restart Edge after changing IE mode configuration. Microsoft Edge IE mode documentation
  2. Confirm the required control is installed. Check with the application owner or control publisher for the correct version and publisher. If an IE mode add-on installation is blocked, Microsoft directs administrators to inspect IE security-zone settings and Group Policy. Microsoft: ActiveX control installation troubleshooting
  3. Review zone and policy permissions. ActiveX downloading, running, and scripting are separate security decisions. Microsoft documents distinct policies for signed and unsigned control downloads, as well as settings for controls not marked safe. The applicable setting depends on the site’s security zone and administrator policy. Microsoft: ActiveX control installation troubleshooting Microsoft: ActiveX control security settings
  4. Check scripting and event support. A control may load but refuse script interaction if it is not marked safe for scripting, or if it does not implement the event interfaces the page expects. Ask the vendor or administrator to confirm the intended behavior rather than bypassing the restriction. Microsoft: ActiveX control security settings Microsoft: ActiveX events and interfaces

Keep security changes narrow

Do not globally enable unsigned downloads or unsafe control initialization just to make a page work. Microsoft warns that enabling unsigned downloads increases malware risk and advises limiting changed settings to trusted internal sites. It also does not recommend unsafe initialization or scripting settings outside secure, administered zones. Have an administrator scope any necessary exception to the specific trusted site and policy context. Page scripting is different from browser automation

Calling a control from JavaScript running inside an IE-mode page is not the same as automating the browser. Microsoft says IE mode cannot be automated through the InternetExplorer object. If the page does not depend on IE-only content, use supported Edge automation tooling such as Edge WebDriver or Playwright instead. If it does depend on the control, retain IE mode only for that legacy workflow while planning a migration away from the control where feasible. Microsoft Edge IE mode documentation
