You can find templates for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint through Microsoft’s template collection or, in a supported Office app, by choosing File > New. Check each download’s file type and version requirements: Microsoft’s current collection does not guarantee that every template will work as intended in Office 2007.
Where to get templates for Office 2007
Microsoft’s template collection offers pre-built designs for items such as calendars, business cards, letters, brochures, newsletters, résumés, cover letters, and presentations. In a supported Office application, open File > New, choose a template, and select Create to download a customizable file. This is a free template workflow; buying Microsoft 365 is not required to obtain a template.
Because Office 2007 is an older version, check the download page for its file format and any stated version or feature requirements before relying on a template. A file that opens may still use features that Office 2007 cannot reproduce identically.
Which template file type does Office 2007 use?
Choose the extension for the application you plan to use. The “m” versions are for templates that contain macros; macro-enabled files can include VBA code.

Only enable or use macros in files from sources you trust. If a template does not need macros, choose the non-macro extension.
How to download and check a template
- Find a template. Browse Microsoft’s template collection or use File > New in a supported Office app.
- Confirm the app and format. Use the extension that matches Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, and check any version requirements shown with the download.
- Create or download it. In Microsoft’s documented in-app flow, select the template and choose Create; this downloads a file you can customize.
- Open and verify it in Office 2007. Review the layout and features, especially if the template was made for a newer Office release. Compatibility mode can help preserve layout while limiting newer features, but it does not ensure every modern template behaves identically in Office 2007.
How to save your own reusable template
When you have prepared a document you want to reuse, choose File > Save As and select the appropriate template type for the application. For a Word document containing macros, select the macro-enabled template type; for a document without macros, use the non-macro type. The saved template can then serve as the starting point for future files.

Office 2007 support and security
Microsoft ended support for Office 2007 on October 10, 2017. It no longer receives Microsoft technical support or security updates. Template compatibility does not change that support status, so consider the security risks before continuing to use Office 2007, particularly for files obtained online. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Microsoft 365, but that recommendation is separate from downloading free templates.
