Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If jq works on your host but returns “command not found” in a VS Code Dev Container, install it in the container’s image—not on the host—and rebuild. The right install command depends on the container’s Linux distribution.
Why jq is missing inside the container
A dev container has its own filesystem and package environment. Installing jq on your computer does not install it inside the container. If the container’s base image does not include the program, its shell cannot find it.
jq reads JSON values and applies filters to them. Its simplest filter, ., validates and pretty-prints JSON input; the jq 1.8 manual also documents --version for checking the installed version.
Install jq for the container’s Linux distribution
First identify the base distribution with cat /etc/os-release. Use the package manager for that image, and add installation to its build configuration rather than relying on a one-off shell change.

Debian or Ubuntu
Add this to the Dockerfile:
RUN apt-get update
&& apt-get install -y jq
&& rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
The Docker apt-get guidance shows this pattern for installing packages and cleaning up package lists in the same build step. Debian lists jq in its stable package index. Run the build step as root, or use sudo if required by the image.
Alpine
Use Alpine’s apk package manager:
RUN apk add --no-cache jq
Microsoft’s Dev Containers guide describes package installation for container images, and Alpine’s package index lists jq for x86_64. Check the index for the Alpine release and architecture used by your image.

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
CentOS, RHEL, Fedora, or Oracle Linux
These image families use yum or dnf, depending on the distribution and release. A typical DNF command is:
RUN dnf install -y jq && dnf clean all
Confirm that the selected image’s repositories provide the package and that DNF is available before adopting this command; repository contents vary across releases.

Make the installation persist
An interactive package install changes only the current container. If the container is recreated, that change may be lost. Put the install in the Dockerfile, a Dev Container Feature, or another build step referenced by devcontainer.json. The Dev Containers guide covers installing packages in the container, while Microsoft’s VS Code documentation explains rebuilding after configuration changes.
- Add the distribution-appropriate install command to the Dockerfile or other container build configuration.
- In VS Code, open the Command Palette and run Dev Containers: Rebuild Container.
- Open a terminal attached to the rebuilt container and verify the installation there.
Verify jq from inside the container
Run these commands in the container’s terminal, not in a host terminal:

If jq is still not found
- Check the distribution: Use
cat /etc/os-releaseto confirm you chose the package manager for the actual base image. - Check privileges: Image build steps commonly run as root, while an interactive terminal may use a non-root account. Use
sudoonly when the build or installation context requires it. - Refresh apt metadata: On Debian- or Ubuntu-based images, keep
apt-get updatein the same Dockerfile step asapt-get install. - Rebuild rather than reconnect: Run Dev Containers: Rebuild Container after changing the Dockerfile or dev container configuration.
- Check PATH: If a package query confirms installation but
command -v jqreturns nothing, inspect the package’s file list and the container shell’sPATH. - Check repositories and architecture: Package versions and availability vary by distribution, release, repository state, and CPU architecture. Consult the relevant Debian or Alpine index for the target image.
- Quote jq filters: On Unix shells, put filters in single quotes when they contain shell metacharacters; the jq manual explains the interaction between jq syntax and shell quoting.
