Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If getUserMedia() is blocked on a localhost page, first check the page’s origin and browser permissions: valid JavaScript alone cannot bypass secure-context rules or a denied camera request. When capture succeeds, assign the returned stream to the video element’s srcObject. If the video works but its controls appear vertical, investigate CSS rather than changing the camera code.
Why localhost camera access can be blocked
navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia() asks the browser for permission and, if access is granted, returns a MediaStream containing the requested media tracks. The API is limited to secure contexts. HTTPS qualifies, and browsers generally treat localhost as a potentially trustworthy development origin, but that does not guarantee access: permission settings, an insecure document, Permissions Policy, unavailable hardware, or constraints the device cannot meet can still prevent capture. See MDN’s getUserMedia documentation and its guide to secure contexts.
Check the actual address in the browser. A page opened as localhost or 127.0.0.1 is not the same origin as a page opened through a LAN IP address or another hostname. The SitePoint discussion involved a WAMP localhost page, but the exact browser exception and address used determine the diagnosis; the thread does not establish one cause for every setup. The SitePoint thread includes suggestions to verify the origin and, if needed, configure a local hostname and HTTPS in the web server.
Use the returned MediaStream as the video source
Set the video element’s srcObject to the stream. A src="localhost" URL does not represent a live camera stream. Request access from a user action, such as a button click, and catch errors so you can see the browser’s exception details.

const startCamera = async () => {
const video = document.querySelector('#videoElement');
if (!navigator.mediaDevices?.getUserMedia) {
console.error('Camera capture is unavailable in this context.');
return;
}
try {
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia({ video: true });
video.srcObject = stream;
video.autoplay = true;
video.playsInline = true;
} catch (error) {
console.error(error.name, error.message);
}
};
document.querySelector('#startCamera').addEventListener('click', startCamera);
This example assumes the page contains elements with IDs startCamera and videoElement. The feature check helps identify contexts where navigator.mediaDevices is unavailable; it does not replace checking permissions or handling a rejected request. For an embedded page, the site’s Permissions Policy and the embedding configuration may also need to permit camera access.

| Error | What it indicates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
NotAllowedError |
The browser or user denied access, or the document is not in an acceptable secure context. | Check the address, browser camera permission, operating-system camera privacy controls, and any page or embedding policy. |
NotFoundError |
No available device matches the requested media type. | Confirm that a camera is connected, detected, and available to the browser. |
NotReadableError |
The browser, operating system, hardware, or page could not read from the device. | Check whether another application is using the camera, and verify that the operating system and browser can access it. |
OverconstrainedError |
The requested constraints cannot be satisfied by the available device. | Start with { video: true }; add resolution or device constraints only after basic capture works. |
These error meanings follow MDN’s getUserMedia reference. A missing navigator.mediaDevices object is a useful clue to inspect the document’s security context, while an exception from the request helps distinguish permission, hardware, and constraint problems.
Work through the fixes in this order
- Verify the page origin. Open the site using the intended
localhostor127.0.0.1address rather than assuming a LAN IP or custom hostname will be treated identically. - Check API availability. In the browser console, evaluate
navigator.mediaDevices. If it is missing, investigate whether the page is in a secure context before debugging the video element. - Request access from a user action and inspect the rejection. Use a button or other direct interaction to start capture, and record the exception name and message.
- Check permissions and device access. Review the browser’s site settings for camera permission, the operating system’s camera privacy controls, and whether another app is using the device.
- If needed, serve the site over locally trusted HTTPS. Configure a local hostname and certificate, then configure Apache or NGINX to serve that hostname. The certificate must be trusted by the browser; simply generating one does not by itself make an untrusted HTTPS connection suitable for testing.
- After capture works, fix presentation separately. Inspect the video dimensions, its parent’s layout rules, and styles applied to the video and controls.
Choose the simplest origin, device, and constraints that fit
| Choice | Trade-off | Best first step |
|---|---|---|
Plain localhost development access |
Usually the least setup for local development, but the browser’s treatment depends on the actual origin and context. | Use the exact localhost address and verify that navigator.mediaDevices is available. |
| Locally trusted HTTPS hostname | Requires certificate trust and web-server configuration, but provides an HTTPS origin for development. | Use it when the browser does not accept the current page context, or when testing an HTTPS deployment setup. |
| Built-in camera | Convenient if present and available to the operating system and browser. | Begin with { video: true } and confirm the device is not blocked or in use elsewhere. |
| External USB webcam | Can provide a camera when the computer lacks a usable built-in one, but cannot fix origin or permission problems. | Use only after confirming the browser and operating system detect the camera. |
| Permissive constraints | Fewer requirements make initial device matching simpler. | Start with { video: true }. |
| Specific resolution or device constraints | Can select a particular camera or output, but unsupported requirements may produce OverconstrainedError. |
Add constraints one at a time after basic capture succeeds. |
Fix vertical video controls with CSS, not camera permissions
If the stream is playing and only the controls look vertical, treat that as a layout problem. Inspect the video element’s width and height, its parent’s flex or grid rules, the parent’s writing mode, and any global styles that affect video elements or their controls. A capture permission or getUserMedia() constraint change will not correct a CSS layout issue.
