Neither HarmonyOS nor Android is a universal winner. The practical difference depends on the exact HarmonyOS generation, phone or tablet, region, and apps you need. Huawei’s statement that some HarmonyOS 2 devices could run existing Android apps is not a promise for HarmonyOS NEXT; update duration depends on the specific device maker and model; and documented privacy controls do not establish that one platform is categorically more private.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
“HarmonyOS” covers different software generations and device configurations. Android behavior also varies by release, app, handset maker, and market. A platform-level comparison can explain documented capabilities, but it cannot confirm that a particular app works on a particular device or establish how long a specific phone will receive security updates.
The table separates the documented platform details from what you still need to check for an individual device. Source names refer to official Huawei or Android documentation.

Will your apps work on HarmonyOS or Android?
HarmonyOS 2 is not the same compatibility promise as HarmonyOS NEXT
Huawei Support’s migration guidance says HarmonyOS 2 could run existing Android apps on some HarmonyOS devices. That limited statement does not guarantee that every Android app will work, that Google Play or Google services are available, or that Android apps are supported on later HarmonyOS generations.

Huawei’s developer documentation now describes HarmonyOS NEXT devices running HarmonyOS 7.0 at API version 26.0.0. The documentation concerns developing and adapting apps for that platform; it does not establish that NEXT runs Android apps. Huawei’s AppGallery review overview distinguishes several package types, including APK (Android apps), RPK quick apps, APP (HarmonyOS apps), and EXE packages. The presence of an APK category in review guidance alone does not confirm that an APK can be installed or run on a given phone.
Android app compatibility can change with the OS and the app
Android Developers defines compatibility in terms of an app running properly on a particular platform version. Its guidance distinguishes changes that apply to all apps from changes tied to an app’s target SDK. Android 16 is identified as API level 36. An app may therefore need developer changes or testing as Android evolves; the platform guidance is not a guarantee that every app will work immediately after an upgrade.

Check essential apps individually
Before choosing a device, verify each must-have app for the exact model and region. Check whether the app has a native HarmonyOS version, how it is distributed on that device, and whether it depends on services or features your configuration provides. For Android, check the app’s current support for the handset’s Android version. Banking, work, authentication, travel, and payment apps are especially worth confirming directly with their providers. The official platform documentation cited here does not settle availability of any particular app, including Google apps, across all HarmonyOS NEXT devices and countries.
How do HarmonyOS and Android updates compare?
Platform changes are not the same as a phone’s update commitment
Both platforms can introduce API changes or behavior changes that require app developers to adapt and test. Huawei’s HarmonyOS NEXT guide recommends upgrading the development suite, adapting the application, and verifying it against old and new OS versions before release through AppGallery. Android’s compatibility guidance likewise explains platform and target-SDK changes and the need for compatibility testing. These are developer-process details, not consumer update schedules.

A beta announcement does not promise an update for your device
Huawei announced a HarmonyOS 7 developer beta in June 2026. The announcement describes new functions while noting that device, service, and interface support can vary and that some features require an over-the-air update. A developer beta announcement should not be read as confirmation of a general consumer rollout, eligibility for every Huawei device, or a security-support duration.
What to verify for a particular phone
- Exact model, sales region, and carrier variant; these can affect software availability.
- Current installed OS version and build, and whether the device is on a beta or a consumer release.
- The maker’s current, written security-update commitment for that exact model and market.
- Whether the apps you rely on support the device’s OS generation and distribution route.
The official platform compatibility guides do not provide a complete regional release calendar, exhaustive eligible-device list, or model-by-model security-update term for HarmonyOS versus Android phones. Android’s platform guidance is not a handset-maker support table, so there is no sound universal update-duration ranking to draw from these sources.

Which platform offers stronger privacy controls?
HarmonyOS controls vary by generation and device
Huawei Support documents a Privacy Center for supported HarmonyOS 4.2 and 4.3 devices, with permission information, app privacy-behavior logs, and notices about sensitive permissions. Huawei says those logs are analyzed and displayed locally rather than uploaded to the cloud. Its guidance also notes that some system apps may not show permission reminders or privacy suggestions.
For HarmonyOS NEXT, Huawei’s 2023–2024 Consumer Business Sustainability Progress Report describes more selective access to data. Its examples include granting an app access to a photo selected by the user instead of the whole gallery, and one-time access for other data. These are Huawei’s descriptions of its platform features, not independent measurements of privacy outcomes.

Android controls are also version-specific
Android’s official privacy and security guidance describes a Privacy Dashboard, camera and microphone access indicators, clipboard-read notices, and automatic permission revocation for unused apps on supported Android versions and devices. Availability and behavior should be checked on the exact handset and OS version.
Android 16 documentation describes selected photo and video access for apps targeting API 36. It also discusses a phased local-network permission initiative: the current opt-in phase is intended to help developers prepare, with enforcement planned for a later Android release. That is not a statement that the permission is already mandatory for every app and device.
Features do not establish a privacy winner
The cited vendor documentation describes controls and their stated behavior, but it does not provide a directly comparable, independent measure of real-world privacy outcomes. A feature list cannot show how effectively a platform prevents misuse in practice or how well a particular manufacturer configures and maintains a device. There is no defensible platform-wide privacy score or categorical winner to infer from these descriptions.
How to make the decision
- Identify the exact software generation. Confirm whether the device runs HarmonyOS 2, HarmonyOS NEXT, or a different regional software configuration; do not transfer a compatibility claim from one generation to another.
- Confirm essential-app support. Ask app providers or check the device’s regional store and documentation for each required app, its package type, and any service dependencies.
- Read the model-specific support promise. Look for the manufacturer’s security-update commitment for the exact model, market, and carrier variant rather than relying on the platform name.
- Inspect controls on the device you will use. Verify available permission history, sensitive-access notices, and selected-photo or media access on its installed OS version.
Choose based on verified app availability and the support commitment for the actual handset. The platform labels alone do not answer either question.
