If your Pixel won’t update, first check whether the update is available for your exact model and carrier. If it is available but the download or installation fails, prepare the phone on Wi-Fi with at least 75% battery, check internal storage, retry, and restart after installation. Google says rollouts can take a few weeks to reach a device, and an unfinished download is retried automatically over the next few days.
Check whether your Pixel is eligible and the update is available
- Open Settings > System > Software update and read the status and any instructions on screen.
- Check your exact Pixel model against Google’s current Pixel update support list. Google’s support policy page says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of updates, while listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation devices receive five years, measured from each device’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. Listed Pixel 5a and earlier models no longer receive Android version or security updates. The live list is the authority for a specific model.
Pixel updates are released gradually, and availability can depend on the device and carrier. Google says an update may take a few weeks to arrive. If the phone is supported and Settings does not offer the update yet, continue checking there rather than treating the delay as an installation failure. Google also notes that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions.
If the update is offered but the download will not finish
Prepare the phone for another attempt
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Google recommends Wi-Fi for downloading an update.
- Charge the phone to at least 75% before updating, as Google recommends.
- Keep the phone connected while you follow the status and instructions in Settings > System > Software update.
If a download does not complete, Google says the Pixel will try again automatically over the next few days and notify you. You do not need to assume that one interrupted download means the phone is damaged.
Check whether low storage is blocking the update
Open Settings > Storage and check available internal storage. Google warns that a phone may have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available; this is a troubleshooting threshold, not a stated amount of space required by a particular update.

If storage is low, review large files, media you have already backed up, and apps you no longer use. Google’s storage guidance for Pixel phones distinguishes clearing an app’s cache, which removes temporary data, from clearing its storage, which permanently deletes that app’s data. Do not clear app storage unless you are prepared to lose data kept only in that app.
After the download: install and activate the update
Pixel downloads install in the background. When installation is complete, restart the phone to make the update active. Check Settings > System > Software update afterward to confirm the phone’s status. Google’s Pixel update instructions explain the update and restart process.

If the update still fails
Use the exact error text shown in Settings and your Pixel model when seeking help from Google or your carrier. There is no single documented fix that applies to every update error, and the appropriate next step depends on the message and device. The general guidance here does not establish a factory reset, a third-party app, or new hardware as a routine fix.
