Avoiding generative tools, hiding their controls, and choosing software that does not include them are different requirements. A program’s fit for photo editing, illustration, layout, or video does not by itself prove it meets any of those AI boundaries.
Define what “without generative AI” means to you
Before comparing apps, set the boundary you need. Three common meanings call for different checks:
- No generative use: You are willing to use software that includes generative features, provided you do not use them.
- No visible AI controls: You want to avoid menus, prompts, or other interface elements that advertise or expose those tools.
- No generative features included: You want a product whose vendor does not include generative capabilities at all.
These are not interchangeable. A setting that hides a menu may change what you see without disabling every related capability. If your employer or contract prohibits particular tools, ask the vendor for written confirmation covering the exact app version and deployment you would use; a marketing description is not compliance proof.
Choose the software category before the brand
“Creative software” covers very different workflows. Make a shortlist for the job, and check that each candidate can produce the files and deliverables you need.

| Work you need to do | Starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Raster or photo editing | GIMP is described as an image-editing application. | Check the current release, required editing tools, export needs, and any plug-ins or connected services you would use. The product overview does not establish a permanent AI-free guarantee. |
| Digital painting and illustration | Krita describes painting-oriented tools and workflows. | Assess brushes, layers, tablet support, and the formats you need to export or exchange. |
| Photo, vector, or page-layout work | Affinity positions its offering for professional creative work across these categories. | Confirm the specific application and version, and check any optional account or plan features. The product page does not establish a blanket no-AI guarantee. |
| Video editing and post-production | DaVinci Resolve is presented by Blackmagic Design as a video post-production application. | Check that its workflow and outputs fit your project, then verify the AI features and controls in the version and plan you intend to use. |
| Illustration on iPad | Procreate is described in a January 2026 Creative Bloq article as an iPad illustration app; the article reports that its developer publicly rejected generative AI. | This is secondary reporting, not a current technical certification. Verify the developer’s latest statements and the app’s current behavior before relying on an absolute claim. |
These are starting points, not a ranking or certification. A shortlist is useful only if it matches your device, workflow, and AI boundary.
Compare the practical fit of your shortlist
Once you have candidates in the right category, compare them against the same needs rather than choosing by reputation alone.

- Task coverage and depth: Confirm the tools handle the work you actually do, including any required stages from editing through final export.
- Platform and device support: Verify compatibility with your operating system or tablet, and check that the version you need is available for your device.
- File exchange: Identify the formats you need to open, save, export, and share with collaborators. A tool that cannot preserve a required handoff may not fit even if its editing features do.
- Learning and collaboration: Consider how much time you can spend learning the interface and whether teammates can work with the same files and workflow.
- Total cost and subscription dependence: Check the current price and whether the features you need depend on a subscription, account, or particular plan. Do not assume one pricing model from the product category.
- Privacy and data handling: Find out whether relevant features use cloud services, and review the terms and controls for any files or prompts you would send.
- Generative-AI boundary: Check whether generative features exist, whether they are on by default, and whether settings disable them or only hide their controls. Include optional services, plans, and third-party plug-ins in the check.
Verify AI controls in the exact product and version
Features and settings change. Consult current official documentation and release notes for the specific app, version, plan, and region you expect to use. Look for whether a feature is generative, how it is enabled, whether it uses a cloud service, and whether a control prevents use or merely changes visibility.
Illustrator: hiding the Generative menu is not a universal disable switch
Adobe’s Illustrator generative AI FAQ, updated 1 June 2026, lists tools including text-to-vector, text-to-pattern, Generative Shape Fill, Generative Expand, and Remove Background. It says the Generative menu can be shown or hidden. That establishes a visibility option; the FAQ does not say that hiding the menu disables every generative function throughout Illustrator.

Photoshop: the AI Assisted Editor toggle applies to that workspace
Adobe’s Photoshop AI Assisted Editor FAQ, updated 29 September 2026, describes the editor as an optional beta prompt-based workspace and explains how to turn off its toggle in Preferences. The FAQ distinguishes that workspace from Pro Editor/full Photoshop. Its toggle is evidence about the AI Assisted Editor, not a global switch that disables every generative Photoshop tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the decision against your actual requirement
- If you only need to avoid using generative tools, identify which features are generative and decide whether you can reliably leave them unused.
- If you want a quieter interface, confirm the relevant controls can be hidden and determine whether other prompts or entry points remain.
- If you require software with no generative features, look for an explicit, current statement from the vendor that covers the exact product and version. If that statement is absent, do not treat a hidden control, category description, or secondary article as proof.
Recheck the app after updates, and include plug-ins or optional services in the decision if you plan to use them. Your conclusion should describe the evidence you have—for example, that a particular control can be hidden—not claim more than the source establishes.
