Choose by the workload’s interface and needs—not by assuming one type is always faster, cheaper, or more scalable. Object storage suits API-based access to collections of data; block storage exposes addressable blocks for host-managed workloads; file storage presents familiar files and directories, often through shared network protocols.
How the three storage types organize and expose data
| Type | How data is organized | How applications access it | Common workload fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Object | Objects containing data, an identifier and metadata; commonly a flat namespace | APIs or client libraries | Media, unstructured data, backups, archives and cloud-native object workloads |
| Block | Separately addressable blocks exposed to a host as a volume | The host or application reads and writes blocks, with the operating system or application supplying higher-level structure | Databases, transaction processing, virtual-machine disks, caching and other I/O-sensitive workloads |
| File | Files arranged in directories and located by path | Filesystem operations, often through a mounted share using NFS or SMB | Shared directories, team repositories and applications designed for filesystem access |
These are architectural patterns, not performance guarantees. A particular service’s behavior depends on its tier, configuration, region and workload.
Object storage: address data as objects
An object combines stored data with an identifier and metadata. Applications usually interact with objects through a service API or client library rather than expecting an ordinary mounted filesystem. The model works well for large collections of unstructured data, including rich media, content delivery, IoT data, big-data workflows, backups and archives.
Object metadata can carry useful information alongside an object, but object operations do not automatically behave like editing a file in place. If an existing application expects filesystem operations, it may need changes or a gateway layer. Check the service’s API, listing behavior, retention features and operation semantics before moving a workload.

Block storage: build on addressable blocks
Block storage presents separately addressable blocks to a host or application, typically as a volume. The host’s operating system or the application builds the filesystem or other higher-level data structure on top. This gives the workload control over that structure, while leaving more filesystem and data-management responsibility with the host or application than a managed file service typically does.
Databases, transaction processing, virtual-machine disks and caching are common fits when an application needs frequent updates or I/O-sensitive access. Assess the required IOPS, latency, throughput, capacity, host attachment and read/write mix for the specific product and workload; the block label alone does not promise a particular performance level.

File storage: use paths and familiar filesystem operations
File storage presents files in directories, addressed by paths and accessed using filesystem operations. Shared file services can let multiple clients use the same data, commonly through NFS or SMB. That makes file storage a natural option for shared content and applications already built around file access.
Confirm that the service supports the protocol and client behavior the application needs. Directory structures may feel familiar, but namespace scale, concurrent access, permissions and workload-specific performance requirements still need to be evaluated.

How to choose for a workload
Start with how the application reads, writes and shares data, then verify that the candidate service exposes the interface the application can use. AWS’s guidance also calls out access patterns, latency, throughput, IOPS, read/write profile, client and protocol needs, and migration risks as selection factors (AWS: Choosing an AWS storage service).
- Access pattern: Does the workload request objects through an API, issue block I/O to a volume, or perform filesystem operations on paths?
- Application compatibility: Can the application use the service’s API or protocol directly, or would it need code changes, a gateway or a different host setup?
- Performance profile: Establish workload requirements for latency, IOPS, throughput, capacity and read/write mix. Do not infer these from the storage category alone.
- Sharing and concurrency: Determine whether clients need shared file access, host-level volume access or object access, and check the service’s supported client and sharing model.
- Organization and metadata: Consider whether the workload needs directory paths and file attributes, application-managed structures on blocks, or object identifiers and custom metadata.
- Migration effort: Identify dependencies on filesystem semantics, protocols, object operation behavior and existing data-management processes before choosing.
There is no universal price or performance winner. Compare current service documentation and the costs and behavior of the exact configuration in the intended region, then validate it against the workload rather than a generic category description.

Important detail: object names can look like folders
In Google Cloud Storage, the namespace is flat: a slash-delimited object name can appear as if it were inside a folder in tools, without representing a real directory in the filesystem sense. That behavior is specific to the service’s implementation; check the target object store’s documentation rather than assuming visible folder-like names provide ordinary directory semantics. See Google Cloud Storage: About Cloud Storage objects.
