How Monero Makes Transactions Private

Monero’s default privacy combines ring signatures, one-time stealth addresses and RingCT to obscure the spender, destination and amount on the public blockchain, while leaving network and endpoint risks to address separately.

Monero makes its ordinary on-chain transactions private by default using three complementary tools: ring signatures obscure which output is being spent, stealth addresses create a one-time destination for each payment, and RingCT conceals the amount while letting the network verify the transaction. These protections limit what observers can learn from the public blockchain; they do not hide every detail from the recipient, protect a user’s IP address automatically, or prevent disclosures caused by compromised devices or leaked keys.

What a public observer can see

On a transparent blockchain, a public transaction can expose the sending address, receiving address, and amount. Monero’s on-chain design is intended to keep those ordinary details from being directly readable in the public ledger. Its privacy mechanisms address different parts of a transaction, so it is useful to consider them separately.

Transaction detail Monero’s on-chain protection What it does not establish
Which output is being spent A ring signature presents the real output alongside decoys, obscuring which member authorized the spend. It does not make every candidate equally likely under all outside analysis.
Where a payment is received A one-time stealth address is generated for each payment. The recipient can still know the payment details, and disclosure outside the blockchain can identify them.
Payment amount RingCT conceals ordinary transaction amounts and supports validity checks without publishing them. Transaction fee amounts are stored in clear text.
Network origin or IP address Dandelion++ makes transaction propagation less traceable. It does not by itself protect against an ISP, VPN provider, or first remote node.

How ring signatures obscure the spend

When Monero spends an output, the transaction includes a ring signature that groups the actual output with other eligible blockchain outputs. The ring members appear as possible signers, but the signature alone does not identify which one authorized the transaction. Monero’s current technical specification describes a ring size of 16: the real output plus 15 decoys.

This creates plausible deniability for the real spend, not a guarantee that every candidate is indistinguishable in every context. Outside information or analysis may affect what an observer infers; the ring signature’s role is to avoid revealing the real member directly through the signature.

How stealth addresses hide the recipient

A recipient can share a public Monero address without having every incoming payment visibly land at that same address. For each payment, the sender derives a unique one-time destination on the recipient’s behalf. An observer who searches the blockchain for the recipient’s published address therefore cannot simply use it to list all payments to that person.

The recipient’s wallet scans transactions and identifies outputs meant for it using view-key information and the public spend key. This lets the recipient find incoming funds while keeping the payment destination from being a reusable public marker.

How RingCT hides amounts

RingCT, short for Ring Confidential Transactions, hides ordinary transaction amounts. The network still has to check that a transaction follows protocol rules, so cryptographic proofs support validation without exposing those amounts publicly. The Monero Project says RingCT was introduced at block 1,220,516 in January 2017 and became mandatory after September 2017.

Amount privacy does not mean every transaction-related number is hidden: Monero’s technical book notes that fee amounts are stored in clear text. That distinction matters when assessing what a ledger observer can learn.

Privacy is the default, but it is not universal anonymity

Monero transactions use these privacy protections as a network requirement rather than an optional mixer step. The Monero Project FAQ puts it this way: “All transactions on the network are private by mandate; there is no way to accidentally send a transparent transaction.”

That default describes what the public transaction format exposes; it does not prevent people or systems involved in a payment from knowing more. A recipient can know that they were paid and how much. Monero also supports selectively proving a payment to a chosen party using transaction-specific information, allowing a user to verify a payment without making it generally public.

What Monero does—and does not—do for network privacy

On-chain privacy and network privacy are separate. Dandelion++ changes how transactions propagate through the network to make it harder to trace where a transaction originated. Monero’s technical specification says this does not protect against an ISP or VPN provider, or the first remote node a wallet contacts. Using a remote node does not provide IP protection by default; Tor or I2P must be configured separately for that layer of protection.

Likewise, transaction privacy cannot help if a user identifies themselves to a counterparty, exposes keys, runs compromised software, or otherwise leaks the relevant information. The practical boundary is the public ledger: the protocol conceals specified transaction details there, but it cannot control every endpoint, network connection, or human disclosure.

How Monero’s privacy differs from other coins

The key distinction from a transparent-chain transaction is that Monero combines protection for the apparent sender, recipient destination, and amount rather than leaving those details directly readable in the ordinary public record. Its ring signatures address which output was spent, stealth addresses prevent a public reusable receiving address, and RingCT hides amounts. Network-layer IP protection remains a separate concern rather than an automatic consequence of those on-chain mechanisms.
