The quickest way to narrow it down is to identify whether you connect by cable or wirelessly, then check compatibility and troubleshoot that connection path first.
Start with the connection type and compatibility
First note whether you plug the phone into the car or connect wirelessly, whether Android Auto worked before, and whether the problem began after changing the phone, car, cable, or software. Android Auto faults can involve the phone, car, USB cable, or software; repeated disconnections do not point to one universal cause.
A USB port by itself does not establish Android Auto compatibility. Check with the vehicle maker or dealer that your exact car or aftermarket receiver supports Android Auto—and whether it supports the wired or wireless version you want to use.
Google’s setup guidance lists Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable for wired use. Wireless use has separate compatibility requirements, including a phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support; Google’s guidance also specifies compatible wireless projection for Android 11 phones. Requirements can vary by region and device, so confirm them with the phone and vehicle makers.

If you use a USB cable
Test the cable and connection
- Check whether the phone charges when connected, but do not treat charging alone as proof of a working data connection. A cable can supply power while failing to maintain the data link Android Auto needs.
- Inspect the cable ends and the phone and vehicle USB ports for visible debris or damage. If possible, test with a known-good data cable; the cable supplied with the phone is a useful option.
- Use a high-quality cable shorter than one metre (about three feet), as Google recommends. Avoid USB hubs, extensions, and long cable runs while troubleshooting.
- If your phone shows a USB connection notification, check whether a data-transfer option is available and enabled. The label and location vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
Google says: “If Android Auto had worked properly before and no longer works now, replace your USB cable and that will likely fix the issue.” It is a sensible early test, not a guarantee: a damaged port, incompatible setup, or head-unit fault can produce similar symptoms.
Check for an aftermarket USB extension
If an aftermarket receiver’s rear USB port is routed to a cabin port through an extension, test the head unit’s rear port and the installation arrangement recommended by its manufacturer, if practical. A Google Community FAQ describes signal or compatibility trouble in a particular extension setup with some newer USB-C phones; that scenario is not a general explanation for every wired dropout.

If you connect wirelessly
Confirm wireless support and complete pairing
Wired Android Auto support does not guarantee wireless support. Confirm that both the phone and the car or stereo support wireless Android Auto, and that the phone meets the applicable Wi-Fi requirement.
Google says the initial wireless connection uses Bluetooth pairing. During setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on, follow the vehicle’s pairing instructions, and keep the phone in range of mobile data as required for the service.

Refresh a stale pairing
If wireless Android Auto fails to reconnect or the issue occurs only with a second car, remove the remembered car from the phone’s Android Auto settings and pair again using the vehicle’s instructions. Avoid assuming that a report of a similar problem from another driver establishes the cause in your setup.
Check the car system and phone software
- Enable Android Auto in the car. Check the infotainment system’s settings; the exact menu varies by vehicle.
- Restart the infotainment system. Use the vehicle maker’s instructions for restarting its display or head unit.
- Check receiver firmware. If you have an aftermarket stereo, look for updates on its manufacturer’s official support site and follow its update instructions.
- Update phone components. Install available updates for Android Auto, the Google app, and Google Play services.
If those checks do not help, a later troubleshooting step is to force-stop Android Auto and clear its cache or storage in the phone’s app settings. Menu names differ across Android versions and manufacturers; clearing storage may reset app data or setup, so use it only after simpler checks.

When it still disconnects
Record what happens rather than describing the fault only as “random.” Note the exact error message, whether navigation, audio, and other apps stop together, whether the connection reconnects, and when the drop occurs. Include the car and head-unit models, phone model, Android version, Android Auto version, Google Play services version, and locale when contacting support.
Google’s bug-report guidance says to capture a report soon after the incident and keep the phone connected while the report is being captured; disconnecting it can cause useful information to be lost. For suspected compatibility or receiver faults, contact the vehicle or stereo maker. If the problem appears limited to one phone, contact its manufacturer or Android Auto support.

Which troubleshooting path should you choose?
| Connection | First checks | What the result helps isolate |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Use a short, known-good data cable; inspect both ports; bypass hubs and extensions. | A stable connection points toward the original cable or connection path; continued dropouts leave the phone port, car port, compatibility, or receiver system to check. |
| Wireless | Verify wireless compatibility; keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup; pair again if needed. | A successful fresh pairing points toward a stale pairing or setup issue; continued failure calls for checking phone and vehicle compatibility and software. |
Replacing a short USB data cable is a direct diagnostic test for wired users. It will not address a wireless-only dropout or repair a faulty vehicle port or head unit. Avoid buying a wireless adapter or other hardware on the assumption that it is a general fix; the right next step depends on the supported connection type and the failing part of the setup.
