Jellyfin vs Plex: Features, Remote Streaming, and Costs Compared

Jellyfin has no premium software tier; Plex keeps local personal-media streaming free but requires Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass for remote video. Compare setup, playback, and costs.

Jellyfin is the better fit if you want free, self-hosted software and are comfortable managing your own server; Plex is the better fit if you value its broader feature set and account-based ecosystem and will pay for remote video streaming. Jellyfin has no premium licenses or feature tiers. Plex keeps local-network playback of personal media free, but remote video viewing requires a qualifying Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass. The practical choice depends on how you watch, which devices and files you use, and how much server and network setup you want to handle.

What Jellyfin and Plex do

Both organize a personal media collection on a central server and stream it to client apps. Jellyfin describes itself as free software for streaming media from a dedicated server to multiple apps; Plex Media Server similarly organizes and streams a collection from a central location.

The key difference is the product model: Jellyfin is free software without premium licenses or gated features, while Plex combines free local playback with paid options for remote video access and additional features. “Free” refers to the software or local playback, not every cost of running a home server: storage, electricity, internet service, hardware, and maintenance may still cost money.

Is Jellyfin free, and what does Plex cost?

Jellyfin has no premium software tier

Jellyfin’s official introduction says, “There are no strings attached, no premium licenses or features, and no hidden agendas.” That describes its software model; it does not mean the server has no operating costs. You may need storage or a device to host it, and you remain responsible for power, connectivity, and upkeep.

Plex separates remote access from Plex Pass

Plex’s plans page says local-network streaming of personal media is free. To stream personal video remotely, Plex requires a qualifying active subscription: the server administrator’s Plex Pass, the viewer’s Plex Pass, or the viewer’s Remote Watch Pass. Remote Watch Pass is specifically for remote streaming; Plex Pass includes remote streaming along with other premium benefits.

On October 7, 2026, Plex’s plans page listed standard Remote Watch Pass at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year in example USD pricing after the introductory pricing period. Prices may vary by currency, and that page’s accessible text did not provide a verified current Plex Pass price. Check the current Plex plans page for the offer available to you before subscribing.

How remote streaming works in practice

With Plex

A subscription alone does not configure your server for access from outside your home. Plex says Remote Access must also be set up. Before choosing Plex, account for both requirements: a qualifying pass for the person watching and a server that has Remote Access configured.

With Jellyfin

Jellyfin’s documentation points administrators to networking settings and external-access configuration. That means you should expect to handle the server and network side rather than assume remote access will work automatically. The project’s guidance is available in its networking documentation.

In short, Jellyfin avoids a premium software license but asks you to take responsibility for hosting and access configuration. Plex offers a defined paid route to remote personal-video streaming, but still requires server-side Remote Access setup.

Playback, client support, and transcoding

Neither platform guarantees that every file will play directly on every device. Playback depends on the client app, codecs, subtitle format, source quality, network bandwidth, and the number of simultaneous streams. Jellyfin’s client documentation notes that subtitles can affect whether a file is direct-streamed or requires video transcoding.

  • Back Up Multiple Computers & Devices – NAS Navigator management utility and PC backup software included. NAS Navigator 2 for macOS 15 and earlier. You can set up automated backups of data on your computers.

Direct playback generally places less conversion work on the server. If the server must transcode a file for a client or connection, its workload can increase; the exact demand depends on the media and viewing conditions. Jellyfin provides hardware-acceleration guidance. Plex lists hardware transcoding as a Plex Pass benefit.

There is no universal CPU, GPU, or NAS requirement established by these product pages. Check the specific clients and media you intend to use, and whether your setup will direct-play or transcode, before buying hardware. A NAS is one possible host and storage choice, not a requirement; existing hardware may be enough for your needs.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Jellyfin if

  • You want free software without a premium license or feature tier.
  • You are willing to administer a server and configure networking for access outside your home.
  • You want to assess and control the server, clients, and playback setup yourself.

Choose Plex if

  • You want free local-network playback of your personal media and are prepared to pay for remote video streaming.
  • You want Plex Pass benefits such as hardware transcoding, downloads, or intro and credits skipping.
  • You prefer Plex’s account-based access model and are comfortable configuring Remote Access on the server.

Before deciding, check your actual setup

  1. List the devices and client apps you will use, then confirm they support the media you plan to play.
  2. Check the codecs and subtitle formats in your files; these can affect direct playback and transcoding.
  3. Decide whether you need to watch outside your home. For Plex, compare Remote Watch Pass with Plex Pass based on the features you will use; for Jellyfin, consider the network administration involved.
  4. Estimate how many people may stream at once and whether your existing server can handle any transcoding your clients require.

Sources and changing terms

Product terms and prices can change. Jellyfin describes its documentation and software as fast-moving; Plex’s remote-streaming eligibility and subscription prices should be checked on its current plans page. The comparison above reflects the official product pages as accessed on October 7, 2026.
