How Game Developers Record and Implement Video Game Dialogue

Game dialogue moves from contextualized script lines to recorded performances, engine playback, subtitles, and localized versions. Here is how the hand-offs fit together.

Game dialogue becomes playable through a production pipeline: developers prepare and identify each line, give actors performance context, record and review takes, connect approved audio to dialogue data and game logic, then check the result in the game. Branching conversations add another layer: the game must know which line is available, who speaks, and what conditions trigger it. Localization repeats parts of the process for each language.

What a game dialogue pipeline has to connect

A spoken line is more than a script sentence and an audio file. The production team needs to keep its text, speaker, scene or conversation, delivery direction, conditions for use, and final recording associated with one another. Stable identifiers and filenames make that hand-off easier to manage. The exact naming scheme is project-specific; the reviewed engine documentation does not establish a universal standard.

For branching or reactive dialogue, the line also needs a relationship to the conversation flow and the game state that makes it available. These links let the game select an appropriate line rather than playing dialogue as an unconnected sequence. That design follows from the contextual speaker and listener data documented in Unreal Engine and the need to preserve interactive narrative context in Microsoft’s localization guidance.

How teams prepare and record voice lines

Prepare the script and performance context

Before a session, organize lines so actors and production staff can identify the speaker and understand the scene, character, intended delivery, and relevant interaction. Microsoft’s game-localization guidance recommends giving localization teams materials such as scripts, character biographies, walkthroughs, style guides, and, where possible, access to a game build. The same context helps performers understand what a line is doing in the game.

Finalize a character’s lines as much as practical before recording begins. Microsoft notes that repeated small recording sessions can cost more than recording a larger, more complete set at once. A project may still need pickups or revisions, but avoid treating frequent script changes as a cost-free part of the process.

Direct and review performances

Actors need direction, not just dialogue text. Unreal Engine’s Dialogue Voices and Waves tutorial includes a Voice Actor Direction field for specifying different delivery toward different listeners. Microsoft’s guidance describes audio localization work that can involve adaptation, casting, directing, and lip-syncing. Together, these examples show why performance notes and review matter, without prescribing a universal studio setup, microphone, recording format, or take-management system.

Decide on line identifiers and audio filenames before recording. Unreal Engine 5.8’s asset-localization guidance warns that changing the filename format after recording is difficult. Its dialogue sheet uses an AudioFileName field to specify the expected WAV filename for each culture. A consistent convention helps the script, recording, and implementation teams agree which audio belongs to which line.

How recorded dialogue is implemented in a game engine

Unreal Engine: Dialogue Voices and Dialogue Waves

In the Unreal Engine 5.4 tutorial, a Dialogue Voice represents a character voice, while a Dialogue Wave represents a line with contextual speaker and listener information and an associated Sound Wave. The demonstrated workflow creates voice assets, assigns them to character Blueprints, creates a Dialogue Wave for a spoken line, adds speaker and listener context and delivery notes, then assigns the recorded Sound Wave. Blueprint logic can trigger playback when the relevant character interaction occurs.

A Dialogue Wave is not, by itself, a full branching-conversation manager. Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 asset-localization documentation explicitly distinguishes Dialogue Waves from a complete dialogue or conversation system. A project with longer or branching exchanges still needs logic or tooling to manage sequence, choices, and game-state conditions.

Subtitles are connected to the dialogue data and active audio context. In the Unreal tutorial’s example, subtitles are enabled by default but do not appear unless a Sound Wave is set for the active context. Unreal’s localization guidance also describes Dialogue Waves containing spoken text and optional subtitle overrides, with the assets gathered through the standard localization pipeline.

Unity: audio building blocks, not a documented dialogue-tree workflow

The cited Unity 6.7 Beta audio overview describes importing AIFF, WAV, MP3, and Ogg files as Audio Clips, assigning clips to Audio Sources or using them from scripts, spatial playback, and mixing. It also describes the Microphone API for recording from available microphones. These are audio capabilities teams can use as part of an implementation; the cited page does not document a built-in branching-conversation editor or a voice-over production workflow.

Runtime microphone capture should not be confused with recording professional character dialogue for a game. The Unity overview documents microphone access as an engine API, not as a recommended voice-acting studio process.

Questions to compare when choosing an implementation approach

  • How will branches and game-state conditions be represented?
  • Does the system need to vary delivery by speaker, listener, or context?
  • How much conversation-management tooling must the team build?
  • How will audio, subtitle text, and localized versions stay aligned?
  • What review and iteration steps fit the team’s size and schedule?

The available documentation illustrates different capabilities; it does not establish an overall engine ranking.

How game dialogue is localized

Localization is a connected production cycle, not simply a text swap. Unreal Engine 5.8 documents a sequence that starts with native dialogue set for each line, then recording and optional copy-editing, translation, localized recording and optional copy-editing, and re-importing localized audio so subtitles reflect the final dialogue. Unreal says that if native text changes during this process, the workflow is expected to restart at the first step.

Unreal’s utilities can export per-culture dialogue sheets from assets. The SpokenDialogue field can be used for copy-edits, while AudioFileName specifies the localized WAV filename. Recorded audio is placed in a culture folder and imported into the appropriate Dialogue and Sound Wave assets.

Localization can also require adapting dialogue to fit performance or duration constraints, casting and directing new performers, and lip-syncing. Microsoft’s guidance notes that localization teams may not have the original development context, so character information and other documentation are important; checking each localized version can help catch problems. For cutscenes, teams may need to provide video alongside source audio and script, with separate voice, effects, and background tracks available for remixing.

Practical production sequence

  1. Prepare the lines: establish stable line identities and record the speaker, scene or conversation, intended delivery, and any relevant conditions.
  2. Provide context: give actors and localization teams useful character and story information, scripts, style guidance, and access to a build where possible.
  3. Set naming conventions: agree on audio filenames and culture-specific naming before sessions begin.
  4. Record and review: direct performances, select approved takes, and track any lines that need revision or pickup recording.
  5. Connect audio to dialogue data: associate the approved recording with its line, speaker or context, and engine playback logic.
  6. Check the result in the build: verify that the intended line plays in the right context and that subtitles are available for that context.
  7. Localize and re-import: translate and record each localized version, update subtitle text, import the audio, and check the localized game.

This is a practical synthesis rather than a universal studio recipe. Tools, naming conventions, recording arrangements, and conversation-management systems vary by project.
