Can Java and Bedrock play together?
No. Java and Bedrock are separate editions with separate standard multiplayer ecosystems. Java players on Windows, macOS and Linux can play with other Java players; Bedrock cross-play works across supported Bedrock platforms. A Java player cannot join a standard Bedrock-hosted game, or vice versa. If you are choosing for a group, ask everyone which edition they use and choose a version-compatible game or Realm.
Minecraft’s official comparison explains: “This means that Java and Bedrock players can’t play together – so make sure to ask your friends which version they have.” Read the official Java-versus-Bedrock comparison.

Choose Java if mods, custom servers or older versions matter most
Java is the better fit if you specifically want the community’s wide range of mods, prefer custom servers, or want to choose among released versions and try snapshots. Mods are third-party changes, not a feature Minecraft Support guarantees: Minecraft Help says, “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” See Minecraft Help’s Java mod support guidance.
If you experiment with snapshots or other test builds, back up worlds first. A test build is not the same thing as the stable release, and your friends need a compatible version to join your game.

Choose Bedrock for consoles, mobile, controller or couch play
Bedrock is the practical choice if you play on a supported console or mobile device, want touch or controller input, or want console split-screen. Its Marketplace and add-ons offer a built-in route to extra content and world changes. These features do not make Bedrock compatible with Java multiplayer; friends still need to be using Bedrock on supported devices.
Console online multiplayer may also require a separate subscription from the console platform. Check the current requirements for the particular console before buying or setting up a shared game.

What if you play on a PC?
For Windows PC, the official store currently presents Java & Bedrock Edition as a bundle. That means a PC buyer may not need to choose one edition at purchase, but should check the live listing for current terms and confirm the desired edition supports the computer and friends’ setup. The bundle does not combine the editions’ multiplayer systems.
Java is also available on macOS and Linux; the PC bundle listing and supported devices should be checked before purchase if you use either operating system. Start with the current Minecraft Java & Bedrock PC store page and platform availability page.

Realms do not bridge the editions
Java Realms and Bedrock Realms or Realms Plus serve their respective editions. A Realm is not a workaround for the Java–Bedrock multiplayer split: choose the Realm type that matches the edition every player will use. Current service details are on Minecraft Realms.
