Menu Key vs. Shift+F10: Which Opens the Windows Context Menu?

Shift+F10 is the broadly documented Windows shortcut for a selected item’s context menu. The Menu key is an alternative in some Microsoft 365 workflows, but not every keyboard has one.

Both can open a context menu, but Shift+F10 is the more broadly documented Windows shortcut. Microsoft lists it for the currently selected item in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The dedicated Menu key is an alternative in some Microsoft 365 workflows, provided your keyboard has one.

Which should you try first?

Try Shift+F10 after selecting or focusing the item whose context menu you want. Microsoft’s Windows shortcut reference lists the combination as “Display the context menu for the selected item.” Microsoft Support: Keyboard shortcuts in Windows

The reference covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft notes that some shortcut behavior can vary by application, so Shift+F10 is the standard documented shortcut—not a guarantee for every app or control.

How do the two inputs compare?

Input When it is documented What to know
Shift+F10 Microsoft’s general Windows shortcut reference; also used in Windows accessibility instructions. Use it with the target item selected or focused. It is the best first choice if you want a broadly documented Windows shortcut.
Menu key Microsoft 365 instructions for opening the context menu of a selected Quick Access Toolbar feature. It is a dedicated key, sometimes labeled Application, and is not present on every keyboard. Microsoft documents it as an alternative in that workflow, not as a universal substitute in every app.

In Microsoft’s Quick Access Toolbar instructions, the direction is to press “Shift+F10 or the Windows Menu key” once the relevant feature is selected. Microsoft Support: Use a keyboard to customize the Quick Access Toolbar

How to open the menu with a keyboard

  1. Use the keyboard to move to or select the item you want to act on. The menu belongs to the selected or focused item, so check that focus is in the right place.
  2. Press Shift+F10. If the context menu does not appear, check whether the application or focused control handles that shortcut differently.
  3. If you are following Microsoft 365 instructions for a selected Quick Access Toolbar feature and your keyboard has a Menu key, press that key as the documented alternative.

Microsoft’s accessibility walkthroughs for Start, the desktop, and File Explorer likewise navigate to or select an item before using Shift+F10 to open its context menu. Microsoft Support accessibility instructions

What if my keyboard has no Menu key?

You do not need to buy a keyboard with one just to open context menus. Use Shift+F10 instead; Microsoft lists it in its general Windows shortcut reference. The Menu key is a convenience when available, not a requirement.
