You can ask questions, set alarms and timers, control compatible smart-home devices, use supported skills, and make certain calls or messages. Some music, content, and third-party services have separate limits or subscriptions.
What works on an Echo without Prime?
Amazon describes Echo as a hands-free Alexa device: say the wake word, then ask a question or make a request. Examples include checking the weather and adding an item to a shopping list. Amazon’s Alexa FAQ notes that features vary by device and service.
Alarms and timers
You can ask Alexa to set alarms and timers. The Alexa app can also show active timers and alarms, and an alarm can serve as a trigger for a routine.
Compatible smart-home control
Alexa can control or check compatible devices such as lights, switches, plugs, thermostats, cameras, locks, TVs, printers, kitchen appliances, and robot vacuums. Compatibility and connection methods depend on the device. See Amazon’s device and Alexa FAQ.

Routines
Routines let you group supported actions, such as turning compatible lights on or off, playing music, or making calls. Depending on what your devices support, a routine can start from a voice command, a time, sound detection, or another trigger. Amazon’s routines help describes available triggers and actions.
Alexa skills
Skills add voice-activated functions in areas such as games, education, health and fitness, productivity, shopping, smart home, and sports. Browse and enable skills in the Alexa app. A skill’s availability, features, or content may have its own conditions; Amazon’s skills information does not establish that every skill is free.

Calls and messages
Alexa supports calls and messaging with eligible contacts, including Alexa-to-Alexa communication. Amazon also documents calls to supported mobile and landline numbers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Mexico. Availability depends on country, device, and number type. Alexa cannot call 911 or other emergency numbers, so it is not a substitute for emergency calling. See Amazon’s Alexa Communication help.
Can you listen to music without Prime?
In the United States, Amazon says customers without Prime or Music Unlimited can play an ad-supported selection of playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices. This is limited listening, not the full on-demand Amazon Music catalog. Music availability and terms can differ by country; check Amazon’s current Amazon Music FAQ for the applicable terms.

Other music services may require their own account or subscription. Prime is not a blanket pass to every music catalog, and lacking Prime does not prevent basic voice requests.
What can the Alexa app do alongside the Echo?

Does Alexa+ require Prime?
Amazon identifies Alexa+ as its newer Alexa experience, but availability depends on compatible products and not every Echo has the same experience. Do not assume Alexa+ is included with every model or available everywhere; check the current device and service details in Amazon’s Alexa FAQ.

Prime is not a prerequisite for general Alexa voice assistance or the other basic device functions described above. It also does not make every third-party skill, service, or content catalog free. The relevant distinction is the individual service: some functions work without Prime, while particular content or providers can have separate subscriptions, compatibility requirements, and regional restrictions.
