Version 3.2 is described by its project as running on x64 Windows and directly from x64 UEFI firmware, with familiar line-numbered BASIC alongside modern features such as native x64 JIT compilation, networking, graphics and audio. Its promise of running older GW-BASIC programs is a compatibility aim—not a guarantee for every program or machine-specific feature.
What is Thoreau BASIC?
Thoreau BASIC revisits the style of BASIC associated with GW-BASIC: programs can use line numbers and a familiar, direct approach to writing and running code. Hackaday introduced it as a project intended to run old GW-BASIC code with little change. That makes it a contemporary revival of the programming experience, not a release or continuation of Microsoft’s original interpreter. Hackaday’s October 4, 2026 coverage describes the project’s aim; the Thoreau BASIC project page describes its current product and capabilities.
The appeal is the contrast: code can retain an old-school BASIC feel while the environment offers facilities associated with modern systems. That does not mean every old program will work unchanged. Compatibility can depend on language details, hardware assumptions, and features specific to the original machine or interpreter.
Where can it run?
The project describes one BASIC language for two distinct environments. A Windows x64 program runs under Windows; a UEFI x64 application can run directly through compatible firmware rather than starting inside Windows. The project also says programs can be packaged as Windows EXE files or bootable EFI applications. These are different ways to launch software, not interchangeable labels for the same runtime.
#1 Best Overall
- Windows x64: Use Thoreau BASIC as a Windows program.
- UEFI x64: Run a BASIC environment through compatible x64 UEFI firmware. This is a firmware-level route, not a Windows desktop session.
Check the project’s current documentation and downloads for the applicable requirements and instructions before choosing a target. The available description identifies the architectures and packaging options, but does not establish that every PC or firmware configuration is supported.
What does it add beyond the GW-BASIC style?
The project’s version 3.2 description lists capabilities well beyond the basic line-numbered programming model. These are claims from the project documentation, not independent test results.
- Graphics and input: 24-bit graphics, sprites and mouse input.
- Sound: A General MIDI/GS wavetable and playback of MIDI, WAV, FLAC and Opus files.
- Networking: TCP/IP and HTTP capabilities.
- Execution and performance tools: Native x64 just-in-time (JIT) compilation, multicore
PARFORexecution, debugging and profiling. - Development tools: Source tools in addition to the language runtime.
The result, as described by the project, is not simply an attempt to preserve an old interpreter’s limits. It combines a retro programming style with facilities for graphics, sound, network access and modern x64 execution. The documentation is the right place to confirm the details that matter to a particular program.
How far does GW-BASIC compatibility go?
“Runs old GW-BASIC programs” should be read as an intention to make migration relatively easy, not as a blanket promise. A program that uses straightforward BASIC language features may be a better candidate than one tied to a particular graphics adapter, sound device, peripheral, or interpreter-specific behavior. Even apparently familiar commands can differ between implementations.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf you have a specific legacy program, compare its commands and hardware assumptions with the current manual, then run it on the intended Windows or UEFI target. In particular, questions raised in the Hackaday discussion about old Tandy video modes, multiple-voice beepers and PROC support are reader questions—not confirmation that those features are present or absent. Do not plan a port around an assumption until the project’s current documentation or a direct test settles it.
What is version 3.2, and how is it distributed?
The project page and itch.io listing show version 3.2. The itch.io entry describes the download as name-your-own-price and labels the project “In development”; both the version and distribution details may change as the creator updates the listing. Check the itch.io listing and the official project page for current files and terms rather than treating those details as permanent.
The version 3.2 release description on itch.io also lists file and directory arrays, selector boxes, longer case-preserving paths, recovery and verified-copy commands, text statistics, and support diagnostics. These details describe that listing’s release information, not a guarantee that later versions will retain identical behavior or labels.

There is not enough established information for a reliable full comparison with other BASIC projects. For a practical evaluation, compare the dimensions that determine whether a particular program or workflow will fit:

For Thoreau BASIC, the available descriptions establish its stated feature set and distribution channels, but not an independent compatibility matrix or test results. Treat it as a promising option to investigate when you want GW-BASIC-style programming on modern x64 targets, and validate the specific code and hardware behavior you depend on.
