Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

These six documented controls are a practical checklist: turn on two-step login, protect its recovery code, configure automatic locking, review password health, and know how to respond to an unfamiliar device login. Menu labels and available options can vary by app, operating system, account plan, and organization policy.
1. Enable two-step login
Two-step login adds a verification step when you log in to your Bitwarden account. Set it up in the web app at Settings → Security → Two-step login. The options Bitwarden lists for individual users include FIDO2 WebAuthn credentials, authenticator apps, and email; some other methods, including Duo Security and YubiKey OTP, require Premium. Check the current options shown in your account before choosing a method: Bitwarden’s two-step login setup guide.
Choose a method you can reliably access when you need to log in. A FIDO2 security key is optional, not a requirement; an authenticator app or email may suit your devices and habits better. FIDO2 WebAuthn and YubiKey OTP are distinct methods, so do not assume every YubiKey setup behaves the same way.
2. Save the recovery code outside your vault
When you configure a two-step method, Bitwarden generates a recovery code. Save it somewhere you can reach if you lose access to that method, such as a secure offline record. Do not keep the only copy inside the vault you may need the code to recover. Bitwarden says it cannot retrieve the code for you: Can’t Access Two-Step Login.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
3. Set a finite vault timeout
A vault timeout determines how long Bitwarden can remain open before it locks or logs out. Choose an interval that fits the device and the way you use it, rather than leaving the vault open indefinitely. Bitwarden warns that the Never timeout option stores the encryption key unencrypted on the device, which may hinder security. The available controls and behavior differ among the web app, browser extensions, mobile apps, and desktop app; organization policies can also affect choices. See Bitwarden’s automatic logout or lock guidance for the client you use.
4. Decide whether timeout should lock or log out
The timeout action determines what happens when the interval ends. The choice is a tradeoff between convenience and the extra steps needed to regain access.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
| Action | What happens to local vault data | Access afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Lock | Vault data remains on the device. | You can unlock it, including offline, using an available unlock method. |
| Log out | Local vault data is removed. | You must be online to log in again, and complete any active two-step login. |
Lock can be more convenient on a personal device; logging out requires a fresh login but removes the local vault data. Consider who can access the device and how much friction you are willing to accept. Exact timeout settings vary by client, so follow the relevant options in the timeout documentation.
5. Run the password health reports available to your account
Bitwarden’s reports can help identify exposed, reused, or weak passwords. Most reports require Premium or a paid organization, while the Data Breach report is available to all users. The reports are not all processed the same way: Bitwarden says several run locally, and its exposed-password process compares full hashes locally after a partial-hash lookup. Review Bitwarden’s reports documentation for availability and how each report works.

6. Review devices and deauthorize sessions after an unfamiliar login
Device and session controls are most useful as part of a response to a login you do not recognize, not as a daily toggle. Bitwarden’s security FAQ recommends changing your master password, ensuring two-step login is enabled, and deauthorizing sessions if you do not recognize a new-device login. Use the account’s device or session-management controls to review and revoke access, following the steps in Bitwarden’s security FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Bitwarden may not ask for two-step login every time
Two-step login happens during account login; unlocking a vault that is already active on a device is a separate step. An already logged-in vault may unlock with the master password, PIN, or biometrics without repeating two-step verification. Also, if you select Remember me, Bitwarden may skip the prompt on that device for 30 days. The setting is per device. See Bitwarden’s two-step login FAQ.
