Google Docs can now open, edit, and collaborate on .md and .markdown files without converting them into Google Docs format. Google Drive can also display rendered Markdown previews. The rollout began October 5, 2026, and Google says the feature may take up to 15 days to appear for eligible accounts.
What Markdown support adds to Google Docs and Drive
Google’s October 5, 2026 announcement describes two related capabilities:
- In Google Docs: Open, view, edit, and collaborate on Markdown files while keeping them as Markdown files. You can use Docs’ real-time editing and commenting tools without having to work directly with Markdown syntax.
- In Google Drive: View a rendered preview of a Markdown file. Google specifically notes clickable links and structured tables in previews.
The key change is that Docs can work with the Markdown file itself rather than requiring conversion into a Docs document first.
How this differs from the earlier import-and-export workflow
Google’s July 2024 Markdown update covered importing Markdown as Docs content, exporting Docs content as Markdown, and Markdown-aware copy-and-paste options. That workflow transfers content between formats; the October 2026 feature is for opening and editing a Markdown file natively while retaining its file type.

Google says the older import-and-convert workflow could alter formatting, strip comments, or fragment files. Native support removes the need for that conversion step, but Google has not claimed that every formatting or compatibility issue is resolved.
Who can use the feature, and when
Google says Markdown support is available to all Google Workspace customers and people using personal Google accounts. The gradual rollout began October 5, 2026, for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, and Google says visibility may take up to 15 days. As of October 7, some eligible users may not see it yet.
Google lists neither an administrator control nor an end-user setting for the feature. If Markdown files are not yet opening with the new Docs handling in your account, there is no documented switch to turn on or force-enable; allow the rollout window to run its course.

Google’s announcement identifies support for .md and .markdown files, but does not enumerate supported Markdown dialects or publish compatibility tests for different syntax and edge cases. It confirms rendered Drive previews can include links and structured tables, but does not promise that every file will render identically to another Markdown editor.

For a particular document, open the file in Docs or inspect its Drive preview and check the formatting that matters to you—especially tables, links, and any syntax specific to your workflow. The announced capabilities establish native handling and collaboration, not universal rendering parity.
