Will Discontinued EVs Keep Getting Software Support?

A discontinued EV isn't automatically cut off from updates, and it isn't guaranteed them either. Here's what the Nissan Ariya and Fisker Ocean show, and what to verify.

Sometimes, and it depends on the car. Ending production does not by itself end software support, and no source we found sets a universal number of years that discontinued EVs will keep receiving updates. Two real cases show how different the outcomes can be: Nissan’s Ariya, which is still described as receiving over-the-air (OTA) updates after US production ended, and the Fisker Ocean, whose maker collapsed but whose connected services are run by a separate company.

Production ending and software support are separate questions

Nissan’s official US Ariya page identifies 2025 as the final year of US production. The same page describes OTA updates for technology advances, bug fixes and navigation updates. It gives no end date for those functions, so it shows that a discontinued model can still be marketed as updatable, not how long that will last.

What “software support” can actually mean

The phrase bundles several things that can end on different schedules. Check each one separately:

  • Bug and security fixes to the vehicle’s own software.
  • Feature updates, such as new infotainment functions.
  • Navigation and map data.
  • Cloud and app services, including remote functions and the mobile app.
  • Cellular connectivity, which may depend on a network contract held by someone other than the carmaker.
  • Parts and recalls, which follow their own rules and are not the same as software updates.

An announcement of new features is not a support commitment either. Volkswagen’s newsroom describes new software features and services for its current ID models, but that announcement says nothing about how long support continues if a model is discontinued.

Case study: the Fisker Ocean after the company’s closure

A third party took over the cloud

OVLoop says it was contracted by American Lease and the Fisker bankruptcy trustee to manage connected cloud infrastructure for Ocean vehicles. Its Ocean Loop service is described as continuing cloud connectivity, mobile network access, remote diagnostics and software updates. These are the provider’s own statements. They describe one arrangement for one vehicle, not a pattern you can assume for other brands.

Updates can come with hardware conditions

OVLoop describes OS 2.5 and OS 2.6 updates. OS 2.6 adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support but requires a USB hardware kit, and the provider says the features and timeline apply to North American and European vehicles. For its international OS 2.6 instructions, OVLoop names a specific CarlinKit CPC200-CCPA wireless adapter and a USB 3.0 Y-adapter cable, and warns that other versions may not work. That is an instruction for these vehicles, not a general EV accessory recommendation.

A written term, but only for a specific batch

Fisker GmbH i.L.’s Final Edition guide (version 12.2025) specifies four years of OceanLoop registration with continuous software updates, plus a five-year spare-parts supply subject to availability. That applies to those Final Edition vehicles. It is not evidence that every Ocean has identical coverage.

Old marketing is not a current promise

Fisker’s 2023 SEC filing described the company’s intended OTA architecture. That is history about how the cars were designed, and it does not show what support exists now.

How to judge a specific discontinued EV

Whether you are an owner or a used-car shopper, these are the questions worth putting to the manufacturer, owner portal or service department:

  1. Which update categories (fixes, features, maps, app services) remain active for this model, market and model year?
  2. Do updates arrive over Wi-Fi, over cellular, or only at a dealer?
  3. Does a third party operate the cellular network or app backend, and what happens if that contract ends?
  4. Are there subscription, region or model-year conditions?
  5. Do updates, parts and safety recalls have different coverage?
  6. Can you get a support end date in writing? Many manufacturers may not publish one, so treat a written date as a bonus, not an expectation.

If you are comparing two used EVs, put those answers side by side. Prefer the car with a written term, a clear operator of its cloud services, and a nearby dealer or independent shop able to service it.

What to take away

  • A discontinued model is not automatically unsupported, and it is not automatically supported either.
  • If the automaker fails, a trustee, fleet operator, successor or specialist may keep some services running, but the terms are theirs and may be narrower.
  • Support can vary by geography and hardware, as the OS 2.6 requirements for Fisker Ocean show.
