A wireless distribution system (WDS) is a way of interconnecting access points wirelessly in an IEEE 802.11 network. It lets you extend a WLAN with multiple access points when there is no wired backbone between them. Cisco’s support documentation puts it plainly: “A Wireless Distribution System (WDS) lets you connect multiple access points together” (Cisco, updated August 18, 2017).
What WDS is for
The practical purpose of WDS is to connect or extend wireless infrastructure where running a cable between access points is impossible or undesirable. WDS is a device feature, not something every Wi-Fi router has. TP-Link’s router guide says the router must support it, and a link only forms if both ends use a compatible wireless MAC-address format (TP-Link, updated September 17, 2026).
Common WDS roles
Vendor interfaces describe WDS in a few arrangements. Cisco lists these (Cisco WDS guide):
Point-to-point bridge
Two access points link to each other. A bridge forwards traffic between networks at Layer 2, as described in Cisco’s WAP581 administration guide.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Point-to-multipoint bridge
One access point acts as the common link for several others.
Repeater
An access point relays another’s wireless signal to extend coverage.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Compatibility checks before you set it up
“WDS” does not guarantee that devices from different vendors, or even every model from one vendor, will link. Cisco says its WDS implementations work only with specific device pairs. That rule applies to the cited Cisco product families, so don’t generalize its model-pair requirements to all WDS products. Check these in the manuals for both devices:
- WDS support on both devices, and any vendor-specific pairing rule.
- Compatible MAC-address format (TP-Link highlights this).
- Matching radio or band, 802.11 mode, channel bandwidth and channel.
- Supported wireless security options on the WDS link.
- Which topology you need: point-to-point, point-to-multipoint or repeater.
Performance trade-off
Because a relaying access point must retransmit traffic, Cisco warns that maximum wireless throughput may be halved after the first hop in the setup it describes. This is a vendor caution for that configuration, not a measured result for every WDS implementation. If the link carries latency-sensitive or heavy traffic, weigh whether wireless relaying is acceptable.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Two meanings of “WDS” in Cisco documentation
Cisco also uses the acronym for Wireless Domain Services, a separate IOS feature set. It coordinates participating access points and supports mobility functions such as client credential caching. It is not the bridge-style wireless distribution system described above (Cisco Wireless Domain Services FAQ).
