Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system (RDBMS): software that stores, organizes, retrieves, updates, and helps secure data for applications. Its core service is the SQL Server Database Engine, and applications and administration tools communicate with it using Transact-SQL (T-SQL).

What SQL Server does

A business application might need to save customer records, answer queries about orders, or update account details. SQL Server manages that relational data and makes it available to applications and tools. Microsoft describes it as “a relational database management system (RDBMS)” in its SQL Server overview.

Applications send commands in T-SQL, Microsoft’s SQL dialect. Those commands can retrieve, add, change, or manage data and database objects. Users also connect with management tools to administer a SQL Server environment.

  • SQL Server is Microsoft’s database management product and platform.
  • SQL Server Database Engine is the core service that stores, processes, and secures data.
  • An instance is a running SQL Server installation context that clients and tools can connect to.
  • A database is a managed collection of data and objects within an instance.

The Database Engine is central to SQL Server, but SQL Server can also include other components. Depending on the version, edition, and installation choices, these may include Analysis Services for analytical workloads and Integration Services for moving, copying, and transforming data. They are separate components, not prerequisites for every SQL Server installation; feature availability varies by edition and version. See Microsoft’s SQL Server installation components and SQL Server 2025 editions and components.

SQL Server and Azure SQL are not interchangeable names

Microsoft uses the underlying Database Engine in several products and services, including Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL database in Microsoft Fabric, and Microsoft Fabric Data Warehouse and SQL analytics endpoint. Sharing engine technology does not make those services other names for a SQL Server installation. Deployment model, administration, and product capabilities differ. Microsoft’s SQL Server overview describes the relationship.

Where SQL Server can run

SQL Server can be installed on Windows or Linux, run in a Linux container, or deployed on Azure virtual machines and other virtual-machine platforms. The right environment depends on the application, operational skills, infrastructure, and licensing needs; there is no single deployment choice that fits every use. Microsoft’s SQL Server installation planning guidance covers deployment considerations.

SQL Server editions and their differences

For SQL Server 2025 (17.x), Microsoft lists Enterprise, Standard, Enterprise Developer, Standard Developer, Evaluation, Express, and Express LocalDB. Editions differ in intended use, licensing, supported features, and compute and memory limits. Compare the documentation for the specific version you plan to use rather than assuming that limits or features apply to every release.

Standard Production edition; feature and resource limits are edition-specific. 524 PB
Enterprise Developer Includes Enterprise capabilities, but is licensed for development and test, not production. Not stated
Standard Developer Includes Standard capabilities, but is licensed for development and test, not production. Not stated
Evaluation Time-limited evaluation edition. Not stated
Express Free entry-level edition for learning and small applications. 50 GB
Express LocalDB Lightweight, user-mode version with a quick, zero-configuration installation. Not stated

The size figures are SQL Server 2025 edition limits in Microsoft’s edition comparison; they are not universal limits across SQL Server versions. Database size is only one comparison point. Check the same version’s feature, compute, memory, deployment, and licensing details before choosing an edition. Licensing terms and availability can depend on edition, version, region, and agreement.

What SQL Server is useful for

SQL Server is relevant when an application needs a relational database that can store structured information, process queries and updates, and control access to data. It may be one component in a wider system: the application connects to a database hosted by an instance, while administrators select the edition, deployment environment, and any additional components needed for the workload.
