What Is a Virtual Private Server (VPS)?

A virtual private server runs its own operating system and allocated resources on a physical host shared with other virtual servers. Learn what “private” means and how VPS hosting differs from shared, dedicated and cloud services.

A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine that functions as a server. It runs its own operating system and receives allocated resources, but shares the physical computer underneath with other virtual servers. “Private” means the virtual environment is isolated; it does not mean the physical machine belongs to one customer.

How a VPS works

A provider runs virtualization software called a hypervisor on a physical host. The host supplies processor time, memory, storage and networking. The hypervisor divides and assigns virtual resources to guest machines, each of which can run its own operating system and applications. The result is a server environment implemented in software rather than a separate physical computer. Google Cloud explains VPS architecture, and IBM describes how VPS instances share a hypervisor and host hardware.

What “private” means—and what it does not

A VPS is logically separated from other virtual servers on the host, with its own operating system and allocated resources. The host hardware, however, can serve multiple customers. This gives a VPS more server-level control than a typical shared-hosting environment, but it is not equivalent to having an entire dedicated physical server. Isolation alone also does not guarantee security or performance; those depend on the provider, configuration and workload.

VPS vs. shared hosting, dedicated hosting and cloud VMs

Type What is shared or assigned What that means
Shared hosting Customers share a hosting environment and server resources; the provider controls how the environment is divided. Less server-level control than a VPS.
VPS hosting Each customer has an isolated virtual server with allocated resources, while the physical host is shared. A distinct server environment without exclusive physical hardware.
Dedicated hosting One customer uses an entire physical server and its hardware resources. Exclusive use of the server hardware.
Cloud VM A virtual machine supplied through cloud infrastructure. It may overlap with what providers call a VPS. Some distinguish a traditional VPS on one physical server from cloud VMs running on pooled infrastructure, but the terminology varies by provider.

The distinctions between hosting types are described by IBM and Google Cloud. For cloud VM terminology, see AWS’s cloud server explanation. When comparing services, check their stated architecture and plan terms rather than assuming that “VPS” and “cloud VM” mean the same thing everywhere.

What people use a VPS for

A VPS can host a website, application, database, development or test environment, email server or virtual desktop. The resources a workload needs depend on what it runs, so the term “VPS” by itself does not tell you whether a particular plan will be sufficient or how well it will perform.

What to check when comparing VPS plans

The label alone says little about the configuration or service. Compare the details that affect your workload and how you will operate the server:

  • Compute and memory: allocated vCPU or CPU capacity and memory.
  • Storage and networking: storage type and capacity, plus data-transfer or bandwidth allowances.
  • Control and operating system: supported operating systems and the level of administrative access.
  • Infrastructure: whether the provider describes a physical-host VPS or pooled cloud infrastructure.
  • Service terms: provider-managed services, backup arrangements, locations and availability details, and billing model.

These details vary by provider and plan; a VPS definition does not establish a standard resource allocation, management scope, backup policy or availability level.
