Define invoices as a public API contract rather than exposing your billing tables directly. Keep that contract explicit, version it when a change would break clients, and give consumers a transition path that lets old and new versions coexist while they migrate.
Why an invoice response is a contract
Every response shape makes promises to client code. A consumer may depend on a field being present, on its type, or on what its value means. Removing a field, changing a number to a string, or changing the meaning of a status can therefore break an integration—even if the server still builds and its database migration succeeds.
Stripe illustrates the risk with a field named verified: a client may use it as a boolean, so replacing it with a status field can break that client. The field-change example appears in Stripe’s discussion of API versioning.
What a separate invoice contract means
A separate contract is a deliberate boundary: the API defines the fields, types, semantics, and compatibility policy that clients can rely on. It does not require a particular DTO pattern, programming language, or URL layout. The important distinction is between the public representation and internal billing or persistence models.

Design the public schema around what consumers need, not around the columns in a database row. Map and validate data at the boundary so an internal refactor does not silently alter the response. This is a design recommendation for protecting compatibility, not a mandated implementation pattern.
Specify invoice details clients may depend on
- Identifiers: define the identifier’s format and whether it remains stable across updates.
- Money: specify representation, currency, and the interpretation of amounts such as subtotal, tax, and amount due.
- Timestamps: state the format, timezone convention, and which event each timestamp represents.
- Status: document possible values and their meanings. Do not assume clients will safely handle an unfamiliar value unless that behavior is part of the contract.
- Optional and nullable fields: distinguish a field that may be absent from one that may be present with a null value.
- Line items: define whether items represent billed charges, adjustments, taxes, or another concept, and how their amounts relate to invoice totals.
Keep internal-only fields private unless consumers have a clear need for them. Once exposed, a field can become a compatibility commitment.

How to document and check the contract
Publish a machine-readable specification, such as OpenAPI, for each supported contract or release. OpenAPI gives developers and tooling a defined schema to inspect; Stripe’s public OpenAPI repository describes specifications for GA, preview, and legacy v1-only APIs and notes that they can be used to generate SDKs or client libraries.
Review specification changes for compatibility and test behavior clients rely on—not just whether responses validate against a schema. A consumer-oriented contract check can verify that an invoice still contains the agreed fields, types, and behaviors. Be careful with enum values: Stripe’s versioning documentation notes that older enum representations may still be extended, so a client that assumes a closed set can fail even when no field is removed. The available guidance does not establish a complete compatibility matrix; document the assumptions your API makes about unknown values.

When to version an API
Version the API when a change would break compatibility for existing clients. The ISO 20022 implementation best-practices white paper states, “An API must be versioned,” and recommends versioning the API and its specification, with semantic versioning for the specification. That guidance supports versioning as a compatibility practice, but it does not prescribe one universal route, header, or media-type scheme. Choose a scheme your consumers can identify and your team can operate consistently.
Keep the API version distinct from the specification’s own version. An API release identifies the contract a client uses; the specification version can communicate changes to the document describing that contract. If you use a vendor’s release model as an example, be precise about the dimension being discussed: Stripe describes major releases as backward-incompatible and monthly releases as backward-compatible. Its 2024 announcement described a cadence of twice-yearly major updates and monthly feature enhancements. These are Stripe-specific practices, not a universal schedule; see Stripe’s API versioning documentation and its 2024 release-process announcement.

How to ship a breaking invoice change
- Identify the break. Compare the proposed contract with the one clients use. Changes to field presence, type, meaning, or relied-on behavior may require a new version.
- Define the replacement contract. Update the versioned API specification and explain what changed, including any new invoice fields, status meanings, or migration consequences.
- Test before migration. Check the new version against representative client behavior and contract tests. Stripe likewise recommends testing a new version before upgrading in its versioning guidance.
- Announce a migration path. Tell consumers which contract changes, what they must update, and how they can test the new version. Publish a retirement policy for the old contract.
- Operate both versions during migration. Keep the old and new contracts available concurrently while consumers move. The ISO 20022 white paper recommends concurrent operation for some time until clients have migrated, but does not set a universal minimum duration.
- Track migration and retire deliberately. Use usage telemetry if available to identify remaining consumers, then retire the old version only under the published policy. The policy should tell clients how retirement will be communicated.
Choose a versioning scheme you can support
A version can be made visible through a URL, a request header, or another explicit mechanism. The sources cited here do not establish one universally best choice. Assess a scheme against the questions that matter operationally:
- Can consumers easily tell which contract they are calling?
- Can the service run old and new contracts concurrently?
- Can the specification and client tooling represent each supported version?
- What routing, deployment, and testing complexity does the approach add?
- Can you explain migration and retirement clearly to consumers?
Do not promise a fixed support window as an industry standard. Set and publish a policy that fits your service and consumers; the cited guidance calls for a migration period but does not define its length.
