Short answer: current official tModLoader does not use a Java heap-size setting, and its support guide does not recommend changing a Java limit. For OutOfMemoryException, reduce memory-heavy mods, try a Small or Medium world, close other demanding programs, and check the built-in mod memory estimates. A separate legacy “tModLoader 64 bit” installation is not a current fix and can stop the game from launching.
Is tModLoader’s memory limit a Java setting?
No. The current official tModLoader troubleshooting guide discusses system RAM and the runtime included with tModLoader; it does not document Java heap settings or recommend increasing a Java limit such as -Xmx. The official FAQ lists 6 GB of system RAM as the minimum requirement and says the minimum rises with the mods enabled. That figure is a baseline, not a guarantee that any particular mod collection or world will fit in memory. Read the tModLoader Basic Usage FAQ.
The “64-bit vs. 32-bit” distinction matters, but not as a Java memory-limit switch: current tModLoader requires a 64-bit operating system. The official launch helper on the 1.4.5 branch checks for a 32-bit Windows OS and reports that requirement. This is an operating-system compatibility check, not an instruction to add an old separate 64-bit tModLoader fork. See the official 1.4.5 launch helper.

OutOfMemoryException
This is the exception addressed by the FAQ’s memory troubleshooting steps. It can occur while loading mods or worlds when available system memory is insufficient for the workload. Follow the steps below to reduce the load and identify costly mods.

- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Texture2D, “Not enough memory resources,” or 0x8007000E
The FAQ identifies this as a graphics-memory issue—usually video memory (VRAM)—rather than ordinary system RAM. Integrated graphics can share system memory, so the distinction is not absolute on every computer. Check GPU use in Task Manager, close other programs that use substantial resources, and test startup without loading mods by holding the left Shift key while the game starts.
Launch failure after adding a separate 64-bit build
If you installed the old standalone “tModLoader 64 bit” into your current tModLoader setup, the official FAQ says that it is no longer useful and can prevent launch. Use the FAQ’s fresh-install guidance, then clear tModLoader’s Steam Launch Options rather than reinstalling the legacy fork. Follow the official FAQ troubleshooting instructions.

Fix an actual OutOfMemoryException
- Reduce the mod load. Disable or remove large mods, especially if the error began after adding or updating several. Test with fewer enabled mods to see whether the game can reach the menu or load a world.
- Try a smaller world. If the issue appears while creating or loading a world, try Small or Medium instead of Large. This reduces the world workload; it does not change a Java heap setting.
- Close memory-heavy programs. Open Windows Task Manager and check which processes are using substantial memory. Close applications you do not need before launching tModLoader.
- Turn on per-mod memory estimates. In tModLoader, open Settings → tModLoader Settings and enable Show Mod Memory Estimates. Exit to the main menu and restart the game, then inspect the Mods menu after enabling or reloading mods. Use the estimates to identify mods that may be driving memory use.
- If it continues, isolate the cause. Check the logs and test mod combinations, following the FAQ’s general troubleshooting guidance. If a particular mod or combination appears responsible, its author may need to help diagnose it.
These steps target the documented causes and checks; they do not guarantee that every mod collection will run on a given computer. The FAQ does not prescribe a universal RAM upgrade or a Java-memory utility.
What to do if you have a 32-bit Windows installation
The official 1.4.5 launch helper states that tModLoader requires a 64-bit operating system. If your operating system is 32-bit, switching to an old tModLoader fork is not the supported remedy; the operating-system requirement is the issue. A 64-bit OS requirement also does not mean every memory error is fixed simply by using a 64-bit build: first determine whether the message concerns system memory, VRAM, or launch configuration.

What a reported 1.4 GB error does—and does not—show
One support issue opened March 5, 2024 describes an error after loading a large mod collection and apparent memory use near 1.4 GB. The player later reported that restarting their PC solved their instance. That is one user’s experience, not a general threshold, prevalence statistic, diagnosis, or guaranteed remedy. See the tModLoader support issue listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why old “tModLoader 64-bit” instructions are misleading
Historical community-fork instructions refer to a separate legacy build, not a setting that raises a Java heap limit in current official tModLoader. The current FAQ says the separate installation is no longer useful and may prevent launch; it recommends a fresh install and clearing Steam Launch Options if that setup causes problems.
