First check whether OpenAI supports access from your country or territory. If it does, identify whether a workplace or school network is interfering, or whether you have an ordinary browser or connection error. A VPN is not a guaranteed or approved way around location restrictions, and OpenAI says VPNs or proxies can contribute to some connection and suspicious-activity errors.
First determine why ChatGPT is unavailable
Match what you see to the likely cause before changing settings. The right next step depends on whether your location is supported and who controls the network.

If your location is not supported
OpenAI’s supported-countries page lists the countries, regions, and territories from which it currently supports access. Check the live list rather than relying on an old list or assuming that access in a neighboring country applies to you. OpenAI warns: “Accessing or offering access to our services from outside of the countries and territories listed below may result in your account being blocked or suspended.” The list and its terms can change.
OpenAI says an “unsupported country” signup message appears when someone tries to sign up from a location outside its supported list. ChatGPT and API access are not available in every country or region. An IP-address change does not change your underlying eligibility or guarantee a successful signup. Do not treat a VPN as a reliable workaround for an unsupported location. OpenAI’s documentation does not establish that a VPN makes access eligible or consequence-free; its supported-countries page warns of possible account blocking or suspension for access from outside listed locations.
If you are on a work, school, or managed network
When ChatGPT works on a personal connection but fails on a company or school network, the network may be filtering domains or blocking connections used by the service. OpenAI’s guidance for administrators covers allowlisting, firewalls, secure WebSocket connections, and voice traffic. A blocked WebSocket upgrade can lead to a stalled or failed connection; voice features have additional network requirements. OpenAI says TCP port 443 can be used for voice when UDP is unavailable, though UDP is preferred.

Ask your IT administrator to review the current Network recommendations for ChatGPT errors on web and apps and determine whether the relevant traffic is permitted. The guide is intended for network administrators; its domain and configuration guidance can change, so they should consult the live page rather than rely on a copied list.
If the issue is specific to the macOS desktop app, OpenAI notes: “If you’re currently blocked on the macOS desktop app, you can use ChatGPT on web as a workaround.” This addresses an app-specific network problem, not access from an unsupported country.

If you see a network, WebSocket, or other error
OpenAI’s Troubleshooting ChatGPT Error Messages recommends different checks depending on the message. These are troubleshooting steps, not guarantees.
“Something went wrong”
- Refresh the page or start a new chat.
- Check whether ChatGPT has a service outage.
- Clear the browser cache and cookies, or try a private window.
- Disable extensions that may interfere with the page.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN or secure DNS tool, or try another network.
“A network error occurred” or “An error occurred while connecting to the websocket”
- Disable VPN or proxy connections, as OpenAI recommends for network connection errors.
- Try another browser, another network, or another device to see whether the problem follows the network or device.
- If the failure occurs only on a managed network, ask its administrator to check firewall, filtering, and WebSocket settings.
“We detect suspicious activity”
- OpenAI says VPNs or proxies may route traffic through IP addresses flagged by its systems; try disabling them and restarting the browser or device.
- Secure your account if you have reason to believe someone else may be using it.
Keep privacy separate from access eligibility
A VPN, proxy, secure DNS service, or company security filter may be relevant to privacy or network policy, but none changes whether OpenAI lists your location as supported. OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance also says these tools can contribute to connection or suspicious-activity errors in some cases. Follow your workplace or school’s rules, and do not assume that a particular VPN makes ChatGPT use private or safely bypasses location restrictions; the cited OpenAI guidance does not compare VPN providers or establish either claim.
