Use a poster or tile-print setting to divide the image across ordinary sheets, then leave cut marks off and line up the sheets by matching details in the image. In Adobe Acrobat, choose Print → Poster, check the tile preview and scale, and keep the same print settings for every page. This works best when recognizable shapes or lines cross the joins; plain or repetitive edges are harder to align by eye.
Set up the image for tiled printing
If the image is not already a PDF, open it as a PDF or place it on a PDF page at the finished size you want. The intended page size matters: the print scale determines the physical dimensions of every tile, so changing it can make adjoining edges stop matching.
Adobe’s Acrobat help, updated September 23, 2025, documents the Poster workflow for Windows and macOS. Its Poster controls include Tile Scale, Overlap, Cut marks, Labels, and an option to tile only pages larger than the selected sheet.
Print the tiles in Acrobat
- Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose Print.
- Under Page Sizing & Handling, select Poster.
- Choose the printer’s paper size and orientation. Inspect the preview to confirm the tile grid and that it covers the image as intended.
- Set Tile Scale for the desired finished size. Keep that setting unchanged for all tiles.
- Choose whether to use Overlap. Overlap repeats part of the image on neighboring sheets, leaving room to trim and align; it uses more paper and may require trimming.
- To print without alignment marks, leave Cut marks unchecked. Labels are a separate option: you can use them to identify tile positions without printing cut marks.
- If you are unsure about the scale or how your printer will handle the job, print one page or a small section first. Use the same settings when printing the remaining tiles.
Choose overlap or edge-to-edge joins
| Approach | What to expect |
|---|---|
| With overlap | Repeated image area gives you room to trim and position adjoining sheets. It costs extra paper and adds trimming work. |
| Without overlap | Uses less paper and may avoid trimming, but the sheet edges must meet accurately. White printer margins may remain visible, depending on the printer and settings; no universal margin width is established. |
Overlap is useful when you want a forgiving seam, but it is not necessary for every assembly method. Choose based on whether you prefer extra paper and trimming or a more exact edge-to-edge join.

- Ideal for: Technical line drawings, renders requiring precise, accurate line-quality and crisp text, posters, maps, and professional sewing patterns.
- Media Sizes: Up to 24-inch wide media rolls (large format), and up to 13-inch by 19-inch sheets (wide format) using the optional automatic sheet feeder accessory.
- Media Handling: Sheet feed, roll feed, automatic horizontal cutter.
- Simple & Cost Effective: Print multi-size projects automatically, without needing to manually switching the media source. Cost saving efficiencies like using 95% less ink for routine maintenance vs. other competitor plotter printers.
- Simplify Printing with Included HP Click Software: Save time, ink, and paper waste with PDF error checking, alerts, and auto-nesting. Predefine your print settings and easily print files (PDF, JPEG, TIFF, DWF, HP-GL/2, PNG) by simply dragging and dropping them. HP Click Driver is integrated with your workflow. Print directly from your design and common CAD applications.
Align the pages without marks
- Keep the sheets in their printed row-and-column order. If you enabled labels, use them to confirm each tile’s position.
- Lay neighboring pages together and compare the image at their shared edges. Follow distinctive shapes, lines, text, or boundaries between colors across the seam.
- For overlapping tiles, use the repeated image area to position the sheets, then trim as needed for the join you chose.
- Join the sheets from the back or use an appropriate paper-safe adhesive. A paper-safe double-sided tape is one possible category of joining aid; the available guidance does not establish a particular product as best.
With no marks, alignment depends on the printed content and the order of the sheets. A seam through a blank or repetitive area offers few visual clues, so precise placement there is inherently harder. No alignment tolerance is established for this method.

Check scale and printer margins before committing
- Keep scale consistent: a change in scale changes the physical size of the tiles and can cause seams to drift.
- Use the preview: confirm the page grid and coverage before printing.
- Account for margins: unprinted edges can leave visible gaps in a no-overlap assembly. The actual result depends on the printer and settings.
- Check page order: labels can help keep tiles organized even when cut marks are disabled.
