To finish an Apple Account sign-in, enter the six-digit verification code shown on a trusted Apple device, request one by text or automated phone call to a trusted number, or generate one manually in the security settings of a trusted device. If you can access neither a trusted device nor a trusted number, start Apple Account recovery instead.
Get a code displayed on a trusted device
- Start signing in to your Apple Account on the new device or in a browser, using your password.
- Look for a sign-in notification on an Apple device already trusted for that account, such as an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. Approve the sign-in if prompted.
- Read the six-digit code on the trusted device and enter it on the device or browser where you began signing in.
Apple describes this as a code automatically displayed on trusted devices or sent to a trusted phone number. The approximate location shown in a sign-in alert may be inferred from the new device’s IP address or network, so it may not match the device’s exact physical location. Generate a code manually on a trusted device
If the trusted device is offline or does not display the sign-in alert, you can generate a code from the account’s security settings, provided the device is already signed in to that Apple Account. Menu labels vary by operating-system version.
- iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on older software: Open Settings > [your name] > Password & Security > Get Verification Code.
- Mac on older software: Open System Preferences > Apple ID or iCloud > Account Details > Security, then choose Get Verification Code.
On newer systems, look in the Apple Account’s Sign-In & Security settings for the verification-code option. Apple’s instructions for iPhone and app-specific passwords are available at Use two-factor authentication for your Apple Account on iPhone.

Request a code by text or phone call
If you cannot use a trusted device at the sign-in screen, request delivery to a trusted phone number. A number being listed as trusted does not mean it will receive a code automatically; you must request one during sign-in.
- On the verification-code screen, select Didn’t get a code? or the equivalent option, such as Can’t get to your devices?
- Select the trusted phone number you can access.
- Choose to receive a text message or an automated phone call, then enter the six-digit code on the sign-in screen.
If the text does not arrive, check filtered messages or folders for unknown senders. See Apple’s steps at Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication. Trusted devices and numbers are explained in About trusted phone numbers and trusted devices for Apple Account.

If you cannot access any trusted device or number
If your loss of access is temporary, Apple says the quickest option may be to wait until you can use a trusted device or number. If you have permanently lost access, select Can’t use [phone number] on the code screen and begin Apple Account recovery.
Recovery can take a few days or longer, depending on the account information available. Apple says contacting support cannot speed up the waiting period. Follow the recovery instructions at Apple Account recovery.

Do not confuse a verification code with other credentials
| Credential | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Verification code | A six-digit code used with your Apple Account password to complete a sign-in challenge. |
| Recovery key | An optional 28-character credential for account recovery. Turning it on disables Apple’s standard account recovery process; losing the key can permanently lock you out. Keep it somewhere safe and offline, and do not enable it casually. Apple Support: Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account |
| Recovery contact code | A separate code provided by a designated recovery contact during account recovery, not the ordinary sign-in code. Apple Support: Set up a recovery contact for your Apple Account |
| App-specific password | A password used by certain third-party apps that access Apple Account data; it is not a two-factor verification code. Apple Support: Use two-factor authentication for your Apple Account on iPhone |
