Workday describes AI support as more than a chatbot: its Self-Service Agent can answer employee questions and perform enabled tasks, while HR Service Agent helps HR teams classify, route, and draft responses to cases. The work remains bounded by tenant setup, access permissions, and subscription terms—and cases needing judgment can still go to a human specialist.
How does AI help with Workday support?
Workday describes two related capabilities for different parts of the support experience. Self-Service Agent is employee-facing: it answers natural-language questions using company policies and Workday data, and can guide or complete configured tasks. HR Service Agent is aimed at the HR service team: it helps process routine inquiries and cases so specialists can focus on work that needs human attention.
These are vendor-described functions, not a guarantee that every Workday customer has the same features or outcomes. Availability and behavior depend on service agreement, tenant configuration, enabled skills, and security permissions. Workday’s published support service figures should also be kept separate from AI performance: its 99.5% case response-time SLA attainment was reported for FY2025, covering February 2024 through January 2025, and is not an AI resolution or ticket-deflection rate.
Can Workday AI answer employee questions or complete HR tasks?
Yes, according to Workday’s product descriptions. Self-Service Agent is intended to handle conversational questions grounded in an employer’s policies and Workday data, then move from information to action where the organization has enabled the relevant skills. Workday lists examples such as requesting time off, submitting expenses, updating a profile, making a support request, and viewing absence information. Its examples also include policy guidance around consequential work events such as promotions or job changes.

The exact actions available are not universal. A task must be supported by an enabled skill, and the employee and agent must have the appropriate access. Workday describes availability through Workday and channels including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gemini, and Microsoft 365 Copilot; customers should confirm which channels are currently available and configured for their environment.
What does HR Service Agent do with a case?
HR Service Agent works on the service team’s queue rather than simply responding as an employee chatbot. Workday says it can answer common inquiries, flag knowledge gaps, classify and prioritize cases, route them to an appropriate specialist, and draft responses for that person to review. Its intended role is to assist with routine, repeatable work while preserving specialist involvement where a case needs judgment.
Workday’s administrator documentation describes agent skills that use tools such as Workday APIs. It distinguishes two execution models:
- Ambient execution: the agent acts as itself, using its own permissions.
- Delegate execution: the agent acts for a worker, using that worker’s permissions.
Administrators need to align agent access groups with the permissions required by the APIs used in each skill. That makes security design part of the service design: organizations should decide what data and actions the agent may access, who it may act for, and which work should remain with a specialist.

Workday says cases needing a human touch can be routed to specialists based on availability, capacity, and security. Its July 24, 2024 announcement with Salesforce also described a planned employee-service agent with human escalation for complex cases while retaining case context. That is a partnership announcement, not by itself evidence that the integration is generally available to every customer; current commercial availability should be confirmed with Workday and Salesforce.
The practical boundary is therefore not “AI handles HR” versus “people handle HR.” The described model uses AI for answers, configured actions, and queue assistance, with human specialists remaining responsible for cases that require interpretation or judgment. Customers evaluating a deployment should ask how a particular tenant defines escalation and how relevant context reaches the specialist.

What does Workday Self-Service Agent require?
Workday’s administrator guidance says availability depends on the customer’s service agreement and setup. Its documentation states that customers on the Workday Universal Support Model Agreement (UMSA) have the feature available, with data-contribution settings affecting full functionality. Customers on the Master Subscription Agreement (MSA) must opt in to UMSA and enable the feature through Innovation Services. Workday also says UMSA is required for production and non-production Workday-built agents. Contract terms and product setup can change, so confirm the applicable requirements in the tenant and with Workday.
Configuration involves registering the agent, enabling relevant skills, assigning security groups, activating it, and saving the setup. Workday recommends enabling People Experience Help before signing UMSA or changing the data-hosting region to avoid a 14-day wait for policy-document ingestion in the circumstances described in its setup guidance. Administrators should check that guidance against their own tenant before planning a rollout.

How does Workday’s wider support service fit in?
AI agents are one part of Workday’s support model, not a replacement for all support channels. Workday lists the customer’s help desk or technical support team as the initial troubleshooting route, Workday Community for knowledge articles and crowdsourced answers where customers have access, and support cases submitted by the Named Support Contact.
Rank #4
Workday’s support page describes standard support availability as 24/5, with Severity 1 cases available 24/7/365; subscription-based Workday Success Plans have 24/7/365 availability. Workday reported that 99.5% of case response-time service-level agreements were met in FY2025 (February 2024–January 2025). That is an overall support metric published by Workday, not evidence of AI-specific response, resolution, or deflection performance.

Native self-service, HR case automation, and partner-built agents may address different needs. Compare them against the work and controls your organization actually requires:
- Capability: Does the option answer questions only, or can it perform approved tasks as well?
- Workflow: Does it automate routine work, support HR case routing, or provide a clear handoff to a person?
- Scope: Which systems and data can it use, and which channels are available in the customer’s environment?
- Identity and control: Which permissions govern the agent’s actions, and how are security and audit requirements addressed?
- Eligibility and rollout: What agreement, tenant setup, implementation effort, and release status apply?
- Evidence: Are claims about reduced ticket volume, faster resolution, cost savings, or employee satisfaction backed by customer-specific measurements?
Workday’s product and administrator pages describe intended functions and configuration, but the reviewed materials do not provide independent comparative measurements of these outcomes. Treat efficiency claims as vendor claims unless a customer’s results substantiate them.

Partner integrations and extensions
Workday and Salesforce announced on July 24, 2024 plans for an AI employee-service agent connecting Salesforce CRM data with Workday financial and HR data. The announcement described natural-language interaction, recommendations and actions across platforms, and human escalation with case context retained. Because the announcement described a partnership plan, it should not be read as confirmation of general availability.
On June 3, 2025, Workday announced its Agent Partner Network and Agent Gateway, naming Accenture, Adobe, AWS, Auditoria.AI, Compa, Deloitte, Glean, Google Cloud, IBM, Kainos, KPMG, Microsoft, Paradox, PwC, and WorkBoardAI among initial partners. Workday described Marketplace availability for agents. These announcements establish a partner-led integration path, but they do not establish the current status or availability of every named integration for a particular customer.
A separate Workday developer announcement on June 3, 2025 described AI widgets for in-app assistance, common support questions, and task guidance, with general availability planned by the end of 2025. That was a historical plan; it does not establish current release status.
