When a WebSocket delivers updates faster than a React interface should display them, collect incoming data in a buffer and schedule at most one requestAnimationFrame callback at a time. The callback can publish a batch of changes for the next repaint. This reduces how often your UI-facing state is updated; it does not slow the socket, guarantee one React render per frame, or automatically improve performance.
What RAF buffering changes—and what it does not
A WebSocket may deliver several messages between display repaints. If every message immediately updates React-visible state, the app can do more publication and rendering work than the screen can show. RAF buffering separates those two rates: the message handler records or merges data, and a scheduled callback publishes a batch before a repaint. The browser describes requestAnimationFrame as a way to request work before an animation frame; it is one-shot, so the callback must schedule another frame if more work remains. See MDN’s requestAnimationFrame reference.
This is a scheduling technique, not a promise that React renders exactly once per frame. React controls its rendering work, and the actual cost depends on the update path and component tree. The standard WebSocket API also provides no backpressure: RAF does not regulate incoming traffic or prevent a queue from growing when messages arrive faster than the app can process them.
Choose what the buffer means before writing it
The correct buffer policy depends on whether intermediate messages matter. A scheduler can batch work, but it cannot decide which data is safe to discard.

- SUPERIOR STABILITY AND DURABILITY: The rolling desk adjustable height model stands out with its sturdy H shaped steel base and reinforced structure, providing stability even at maximum extension. The waterproof and scratch resistant MDF desktop ensures long lasting use, while the retractable keyboard tray and hook create organized storage for accessories. This unique design differentiates the desk from standard folding table or rolling podium options on the market.
- ERGONOMIC AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN: The portable standing desk offers a spacious 25.6 x 17.7in surface to accommodate a laptop, monitor, or books. A dedicated slot holds phones and tablets, while the 23.6 x 11.8in keyboard tray supports a full size keyboard and mouse. The thoughtful structure allows the small standing desk to serve as a side table, study cart, or computer desk with keyboard tray in living rooms, bedrooms, and offices.
- EASY MOBILITY WITH LOCKABLE WHEELS: The adjustable rolling desk includes four caster wheels that allow smooth movement between rooms. The lockable function secures the desk in place when needed, creating flexibility for use as a rolling laptop desk, classroom furniture, or teacher standing desk. The compact rolling table design makes the desk on wheels easy to move, while maintaining stability during presentations or study sessions.
- EASY OPERATION AND LOW MAINTENANCE: The sit stand desk is operated with a simple hand lever that activates the gas spring for smooth upward adjustment, while gentle pressure lowers the surface. The mobile desk workstation requires minimal maintenance, as the MDF board is waterproof, scratch resistant, and easy to clean with a damp cloth. This reliable raising desk minimizes user effort and ensures long term durability without complex upkeep.
Replaceable values: coalesce to the latest
For measurements, cursor positions, or current status, intermediate values may be obsolete by the time the next frame is drawn. Keep the newest value per key, then publish those values together. This limits stale visual updates and can keep the buffer small.
Required events: preserve order and content
Chat messages, audit events, and transactions may all need to appear. Do not overwrite earlier entries merely to reduce renders. Preserve the required events in order, then use bounded batches, pagination, or a server-side flow-control design if the consumer cannot keep up.

Set an overload policy
Decide what happens when a buffer reaches its limit. Depending on the product’s correctness requirements, you might coalesce replaceable data, drop items while showing an explicit warning, disconnect, or fetch a fresh snapshot. An unbounded queue is not a safe default for a lossless stream.
Implement one pending frame and publish a stable snapshot
A practical implementation has four moving parts: a socket listener, mutable scheduling bookkeeping, a buffer with domain-appropriate semantics, and a visible snapshot published through React state or a subscribed store. The following is the lifecycle to implement, rather than a guarantee about performance:

- Connect in an effect. Create or attach to the socket in
useEffect, register the message listener, and return cleanup. Follow React’s effect guidance for synchronizing with external systems. - Keep the buffer and frame ID out of rendered state. Store mutable queue data and the pending animation-frame identifier in a ref or external store. A ref is useful for bookkeeping because changing a ref does not trigger a re-render; it should not be the displayed value.
- Validate, then append or merge. In the message handler, parse and validate the payload before changing the buffer. Append lossless events, or merge replaceable values according to the data’s meaning. If a frame is already pending, do not schedule another one.
- Drain once in the callback. When the callback runs, clear the pending frame identifier, take a stable snapshot of the queued or coalesced data, and publish that snapshot once to React state or the store. If new data arrives afterward, it can schedule the next frame.
- Clean up on teardown. Cancel any pending frame, detach the listener, clear retained buffer references, and close the connection only if this component owns it. Avoid closing a shared socket from a component that merely subscribes to it.
If several components need the same stream, an external store can keep socket handling separate from component rendering. With useSyncExternalStore, keep the subscribe function stable, return an unsubscribe function, and return a cached immutable snapshot until the store changes. React documents these requirements in its useSyncExternalStore reference.
Account for hidden tabs and frame time
Browsers usually pause animation-frame callbacks in background tabs and hidden iframes. That means an RAF-only flush can leave data waiting while the page is hidden. For a replaceable stream, you can coalesce while hidden and refresh the displayed value when the page becomes visible. For a lossless feed, define a separate retention and recovery policy; do not depend on a paused visual scheduler to preserve an unlimited queue.

MDN’s browser-rendering guide uses under 16.67 ms as an example target for completing styles, reflow, and paint smoothly. That is a general rendering budget, not a benchmark for RAF-buffered React or a guarantee that your frame has that much time available: How browsers work.
When to use RAF, a timer, or flow control
These approaches solve different problems. Pick based on the data’s meaning, desired publication cadence, overload behavior, and measured results—not on the assumption that fewer updates always mean a faster app.

|---|---|---|---|
| Publish every message | On each arrival | Cases where each event must immediately update the UI and the workload is manageable | Can create more state publications and rendering work than a display can usefully show; it does not add WebSocket backpressure. |
| RAF buffering | At most one scheduled callback before a repaint | Visual updates that should track repaint cadence, with coalescing or batching chosen by data semantics | Does not limit incoming messages; callbacks are usually paused in hidden tabs, so queue limits and hidden-page behavior must be explicit. |
| Fixed-interval batching | At a chosen timer interval | Updates that can tolerate a predictable delay independent of display repaints | Choose interval and queue policy for the application; a timer alone does not provide network backpressure. |
| Server-side flow control or a stream with backpressure | Controlled by the producer-consumer design | Workloads where the sender must respond to consumer capacity | Requires support in the protocol and architecture. MDN describes WebSocketStream as non-standard and limited in engine support, so it is not a universally available replacement. |
Measure the actual application
Before claiming a speedup, profile representative message rates and devices. Inspect parsing, buffer operations, store publication, React rendering, layout, and paint; also watch memory and latency under sustained load. The cited documentation does not provide a comparative CPU, memory, throughput, or render-count benchmark for this specific pattern. A lower publication frequency may help one update path while leaving parsing, expensive components, or an overloaded queue unchanged.
