California’s DROP can send one deletion request to covered data brokers, but it does not erase every record about you or prevent new information from being collected. A stronger privacy plan pairs deletion with steps that reduce future tracking, protect communications, and limit what you share.
What California’s DROP does—and where its reach ends
The California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy) describes DROP as a single platform request to active data brokers covered by California’s system. Under its official terms, brokers must process requests at least once every 45 days beginning August 1, 2026. When a broker finds a match, deletion proceeds on that rolling schedule, subject to legal exemptions. CalPrivacy’s DROP terms define the information covered as non-exempt personal information collected from third parties or from a consumer in a non-first-party capacity.

That boundary matters: DROP’s how-to guidance says it does not delete information you supplied directly to a business in a first-party interaction. Its status guide also uses “Opted-out” when a broker could not make an exact match, so a displayed status does not necessarily mean the broker found and deleted a matching record. Results and timing depend on the consumer and broker; CalPrivacy cautions, “Results will vary by consumer and may take time to notice.”
In July 2026, CalPrivacy reported more than 325,000 sign-ups and requests sent to more than 600 active brokers. Those are agency-reported usage figures, not an independent audit of successful matches or deletions. Use DROP for the covered California broker process; think of the approaches below as ways to address different exposures, not as substitutes that guarantee privacy.

How the nine approaches fit together
These nine categories do different jobs. Some can reduce certain forms of future collection; others help manage accounts or communications. None is a universal eraser, and the categories are not interchangeable.

Browsers and search tools can affect how much browsing and search activity is exposed to tracking. Their protections vary by product, settings, and the websites or services involved. Treat them as a way to reduce some collection during use—not as a request to delete data already held by a broker or business.

2. Third-party data-removal services
A paid removal service may be worth considering if you want help addressing sites or records outside DROP’s California broker process. The available evidence here does not establish any provider’s present-day coverage, accuracy, pricing, or outcomes, so compare current terms carefully and do not assume a service reaches every site or organization.

A VPN or proxy routes network traffic through an intermediary. That can change the IP address a destination sees, but IP masking is not the same as anonymity: accounts, cookies, device signals, and information you submit can still identify or link activity. These tools do not erase broker records.

4. Email aliases and encrypted messaging
An email alias can help keep addresses separate—for example, using different addresses for shopping, newsletters, and personal correspondence. If one address receives unwanted mail or appears in a breach, you can identify the affected channel and potentially retire it. An alias does not remove information already associated with the underlying account.
Encrypted messaging addresses a different exposure: the contents of communications. It does not by itself conceal all metadata, protect a compromised device, or delete records held by the service or other parties. Assess the specific service’s current technical properties rather than assuming every app offers the same protection.

5. Ad blockers and anti-tracking extensions
Browser extensions in this category may block some advertising or tracking requests. Their behavior depends on the extension, its configuration, browser compatibility, and the site. Blocking can also interfere with site features. Review permissions and settings, and regard an extension as one layer—not complete prevention of tracking across apps and devices.

Self-hosting can give technically capable users more control over where some data and services are managed. Open-source software can make code available for inspection, but neither characteristic automatically makes a system private or secure. Hosting, updates, backups, access control, and incident response become the operator’s responsibility.

7. Privacy audits and data minimization
A practical audit focuses on accounts and permissions you can change now. Review which services still need access, remove unused accounts where possible, and share only information necessary for a transaction or feature. These steps can reduce future disclosure, but they do not reach backward and remove copies already held by brokers or businesses.
- Check account settings and revoke permissions you no longer need.
- Close accounts you have stopped using when the service provides a deletion option.
- Before submitting a form, consider whether each requested detail is required.
- Use distinct contact details for separate purposes when that is practical.
8. Decentralized identity
Decentralized identity is a developing concept for managing or presenting identity information without relying on one central account provider in every interaction. It should not be treated as a ready-made consumer fix: the information available here does not establish broad adoption, practical readiness, or independent evidence of effectiveness.
9. Legislative advocacy
Advocacy works at the policy level. Supporting stronger privacy rules or engaging with public consultation can contribute to collective protections, but it does not delete an individual record today or function as a personal privacy tool.
Build a privacy plan around the problem
Start by distinguishing the outcome you want. For records held by covered California data brokers, use DROP and follow its status guidance. For future browsing exposure, consider browser and extension settings. For account communications, separate address management from message confidentiality. For information you control directly, audit permissions and reduce unnecessary disclosure. Use third-party removal help only after checking its current scope and terms.
These measures address separate parts of the problem. Combining them can make privacy work more comprehensive, but no combination here guarantees that personal information will never be collected or that every existing record will disappear.
