Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe most useful turntable upgrades are usually maintenance and setup tools, not exotic sound-tuning gadgets. A record brush removes loose dust before playback; a dry stylus brush protects the contact point; a tracking-force gauge verifies setup; and correctly matched replacement parts keep a worn or damaged deck working. Deeper cleaning, leveling, cartridge changes, headshells and belts are valuable when your records or hardware specifically need them. Always check your turntable, tonearm and cartridge manuals before buying a part.
What these accessories can—and cannot—improve
Accessories solve different problems. Cleaning tools remove contaminants that can accelerate wear, setup tools help the cartridge sit in the groove at its specified force, and replacement parts restore a system whose stylus, belt or other component is worn. None of those jobs makes every record sound better by magic, and a brush cannot remove embedded grime or repair a damaged pressing.

Compatibility is the dividing line between a sensible upgrade and an expensive mistake. Stylus shapes, cartridge bodies, headshell mounts, tonearm mass, compliance and belts vary by model. The safest process is to identify the exact turntable and cartridge, read the relevant manual, then buy the part number or specification the manufacturer names.
At-a-glance guide to the nine options
| Accessory | Primary job | Compatibility or specification check | Best use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Record brush | Remove loose surface dust before playback | Choose a brush intended for records; it is not a deep-cleaning system | Routine care for every listening session |
| Dry stylus brush | Remove dust from the stylus and cantilever | Follow the cartridge maker’s direction and fluid restrictions | Dust visible on the stylus or regular preventive care |
| Tracking-force gauge | Check stylus force at the record | Use the cartridge’s recommended force; Ortofon’s pivot gauge covers 1.25–4 g | Initial setup, cartridge changes or suspected misadjustment |
| Replacement stylus | Restore a worn or damaged stylus | Exact cartridge and turntable model; examples include AT-VMN95SH CL and ATN91R for different models | Audible wear, damage or scheduled replacement |
| Record-cleaning machine | Provide more involved record cleaning | Method and maintenance vary by machine; no single model is established as best here | Large collections or records needing deeper cleaning |
| Turntable level | Check whether the deck is sitting level | Follow the deck’s setup procedure; some manuals call for a separately sold level | New installation or a shelf that may have shifted |
| Cartridge | Replace or change the signal-generating assembly | Tonearm effective mass, cartridge and headshell mass, and compliance must work together | A confirmed cartridge fault or a carefully planned system change |
| Headshell | Hold the cartridge and provide the tonearm connection | Mount and model fit are not universal; the AT-LP3 manual specifies AT-HS3 | Damage, a second pre-mounted cartridge or a model-specific replacement |
| Drive belt | Transfer motor rotation in a belt-drive deck | Use the belt specified for the exact turntable; the AT-LP3 uses an exclusive belt | Slipping, speed problems or an aged belt |
1. Record brush: the simplest routine upgrade
A record brush is for loose dust on the playing surface. Ortofon’s equipment-care guidance identifies a record brush as a way to remove dust and dirt without scratching, and recommends cleaning records before use because contamination can contribute to stylus wear.

Use it before the record reaches the platter or immediately before lowering the stylus. Hold the brush lightly on the surface and let the fibers collect dust rather than pressing hard. A carbon-fiber vinyl record cleaning brush is the common search term for this category, but the important feature is the brush’s intended record-safe construction, not a particular marketing label.
Do not treat a record brush as a substitute for wet or machine cleaning. It will not reliably remove oily fingerprints, residue in the groove or deeply embedded debris. If a record remains noisy after surface dust is removed, move to a more thorough cleaning method instead of repeatedly brushing harder.
2. Dry stylus brush: clean the contact point safely
Dust on the stylus can affect tracking and carries abrasive material into the groove. Ortofon’s stylus-care instructions call for a dry fiber brush. Move it from the rear of the cartridge toward the stylus tip, following the cantilever’s direction. Do not brush sideways, and do not move from the tip toward the rear.

Use only a few gentle passes. Stabilize the tonearm so it cannot swing across the record, and never clean while the stylus is resting in a groove. Ortofon warns that solvents can damage stylus cement or cartridge internals. Because cartridge manufacturers can publish different instructions, your own cartridge manual takes priority over a generic fluid recommendation.
A dry stylus brush is a low-commitment purchase that addresses a routine problem. It cannot correct a bent cantilever, a chipped diamond or a cartridge that is incorrectly aligned; those conditions require inspection and, usually, a correctly matched replacement.

3. Tracking-force gauge: verify the number that protects records
Tracking force is cartridge-specific. Audio-Technica states that incorrect tonearm balance or tracking force can damage a record or stylus and directs users to the cartridge specifications. A gauge checks what the stylus is actually exerting; it does not decide the correct setting for you.
Set the tonearm’s balance and tracking force according to the cartridge maker, then place the gauge at the measurement height and position specified for that gauge. Ortofon’s pivot stylus-pressure gauge is described as measuring from 1.25 g to 4 g; that range belongs to that particular tool and should not be generalized to every gauge.
- Remove the stylus guard only when the tonearm is secure and the procedure requires it.
- Balance the tonearm as the turntable manual describes.
- Set the counterweight to the cartridge’s recommended tracking force.
- Measure with the gauge and compare the reading with that specification.
- Make small counterweight adjustments, then measure again.
Recheck after installing a cartridge, changing a headshell, moving the turntable or noticing mistracking. A gauge is especially useful when the built-in scale is hard to read, but it cannot compensate for an incompatible cartridge or a damaged stylus.
4. Compatible replacement stylus: replace the part that wears
The stylus is a consumable part, but replacement models are not universal. Audio-Technica’s AT-LP2022 quick-start guide names the AT-VMN95SH CL replacement stylus for that model family and instructs the owner to rebalance the tonearm and set tracking force after replacement. The separate AT-LP3 manual lists an ATN91R stylus. Those examples demonstrate why a search for “replacement stylus for your turntable model” must include the exact cartridge and model number.
Before ordering, read the cartridge body, headshell label and turntable manual. Check that the replacement is for the same cartridge family and that its mounting geometry matches. A stylus that physically slides into a different-looking cartridge may still be electrically or mechanically wrong.

- Switch off the turntable and secure the tonearm.
- Fit the stylus using the removal and installation direction in the cartridge manual; avoid touching the diamond or cantilever.
- Confirm that the stylus is fully seated.
- Rebalance the tonearm and set the specified tracking force.
- Check anti-skate and alignment settings according to the turntable instructions before playing a valuable record.
Replace a stylus when it is damaged or audibly worn, not because a universal hour count guarantees failure. Audio-Technica’s 2019 LPW40WN/LPW30TK manual gives 300 hours as a rule of thumb for stylus replacement for that model family; it is not a universal lifespan. Record cleanliness, tracking force, alignment and playing conditions all affect wear.

Ortofon says a record-cleaning machine may be considered for greater ease and quality of record cleaning. This is a different category from a dry brush: it is intended for listeners who clean records regularly, manage a large collection or need more involved cleaning than loose-dust removal.
Use a machine only after learning its fluid, drying and waste-handling procedure. A record must be completely dry before playback, and the machine itself needs cleaning so it does not redistribute dirty fluid. No single machine or cleaning technology is established as best here, so choose based on collection size, available workspace, noise tolerance and the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements.
For occasional listeners with clean, well-stored records, a brush may cover the routine need. A machine becomes easier to justify when repeated manual cleaning is taking time or when used records arrive with visible residue that surface brushing cannot remove.
6. Turntable level: a small setup tool with a clear job
A level checks the platform on which the turntable sits. Audio-Technica’s LPW40WN/LPW30TK manual tells users to use a separately sold level as needed. A small bubble level is a practical category choice, provided it fits where the manual tells you to measure.

- Place the turntable on its final shelf or stand.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for where the level should sit.
- Check front-to-back and side-to-side readings.
- Correct the shelf or adjustable feet as the turntable design permits.
- Recheck after moving the deck or changing the furniture.
Leveling is a setup check, not a guarantee of better sound on every deck. It is most useful after installation, when a shelf is uneven or when the turntable has been relocated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Cartridge: a major change that demands matching
A cartridge converts groove movement into the electrical signal sent to the phono stage. Replacing one can be meaningful, but compatibility is more involved than choosing a stylus by appearance. Ortofon advises considering total effective tonearm mass, cartridge and headshell mass, and cartridge compliance together.
Use the tonearm’s specifications and the cartridge maker’s data before buying. A cartridge that is too heavy, too light or poorly matched in compliance can make setup difficult and may produce unstable tracking. You also need to account for the turntable’s mounting style, alignment geometry and the phono input’s electrical requirements.
After installation, align the cartridge with the turntable’s specified protractor or geometry, balance the arm, set tracking force and adjust anti-skate as directed. A cartridge is a high-commitment change compared with a brush, so it should solve a confirmed limitation or replacement need rather than serve as an automatic upgrade.
8. Headshell: useful for a confirmed mount or a second cartridge
A removable headshell holds the cartridge and connects it to the tonearm. It can be useful when the original is damaged or when you want a second cartridge pre-mounted for a different record type. The fit is not universal: the AT-LP3 manual, for example, lists the AT-HS3 headshell for that model.

Confirm the tonearm connector, locking collar, cartridge screw spacing, lead-wire arrangement and allowable mass. A headshell that attaches physically may still upset the tonearm’s balance or move the cartridge beyond the alignment range. After changing it, rebalance the arm and reset tracking force; the previous setting is no longer reliable.
9. Drive belt: restore speed on belt-drive turntables
A belt is a wear item in a belt-drive turntable. Slipping, unstable speed, delayed startup or a belt that has stretched, hardened or visibly cracked are reasons to inspect it. Audio-Technica specifies an exclusive belt for the AT-LP3, illustrating why a generic belt is not automatically a safe substitute.
Identify the exact turntable model and use its manual or parts information to obtain the correct belt. Follow the installation path in the manual, keep oil and fingerprints off the belt and pulley, and make sure the belt is seated evenly. If speed remains wrong after a correct replacement, the cause may be motor control, pulley contamination, a power issue or another mechanical fault rather than the belt alone.
A practical upgrade order
For most owners, the sensible order is routine care first, setup verification second and replacement parts only when a specific need appears:
- Use a record brush before playback and a dry stylus brush according to the cartridge maker’s direction.
- Level the deck during installation or after moving it.
- Verify tracking force with the cartridge specification and a gauge when accuracy is uncertain.
- Replace a worn stylus with the exact part number, then rebalance and reset the tonearm.
- Choose a cleaning machine for a genuine deeper-cleaning workload, not as a compulsory first purchase.
- Consider a cartridge, headshell or belt only after confirming model fit and the problem each part is meant to solve.
Keep the turntable and cartridge manuals beside the deck. They determine the correct force, replacement part, alignment procedure and belt far more reliably than a universal accessory list.
