You can bring familiar Chrome settings along, get automatic ChromeOS updates, and choose from laptop, convertible, and tablet designs. It is not a direct replacement for every Windows or Mac program: check your essential software, files, peripherals, and the specific model’s update schedule before you switch.
1. Get started with familiar Chrome settings
When you sign in to Chrome with a Google Account, synced bookmarks, settings, and extensions can follow you to the Chromebook. Google’s switching guide explains how to prepare for a move, including backing up files. Account sync is not a complete transfer of your old computer: plan separately for local documents, photos, and other files, and do not expect desktop programs to migrate.

2. Use familiar productivity tools in a browser
Chromebooks are designed around web apps. Google lists Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and Microsoft 365 web apps are accessible too. Some Microsoft 365 functions require a subscription. For the apps you rely on, verify that the browser version has the features you need; specialist tools or workflows that depend on a particular Windows or Mac desktop application may not fit.

3. Keep working through selected internet outages
Offline work is possible, but it takes preparation and does not make every website or cloud service available without a connection. Google documents Gmail Offline and offline use for Docs; its switching guide also covers Sheets, Calendar, Keep, and saved web pages. Enable the relevant offline options or save content before you lose access. Setup may require an internet connection, and Drive storage can matter for files.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
4. Spend less time managing routine system updates
ChromeOS checks for and downloads operating-system updates automatically when the Chromebook is online; a restart completes installation. The update timetable is tied to the individual model, so check it before buying or continuing to use an older device. On the Chromebook, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details to find its update schedule. See Google’s Chromebook update schedule for the policy and model-specific information.
5. Get security protections built into ChromeOS
Google describes automatic updates, Verified Boot, and security chips in most newer Chromebooks as parts of ChromeOS security. These are useful layers, not a promise that any device or account is invulnerable. Google’s US switching page says, “As of May 2025 there has been no evidence of any documented, successful virus attack on ChromeOS,” based on its monitoring of national and internal databases. That is a dated statement from the vendor, not an independent audit or a guarantee against every kind of security threat. Google’s switching page describes the claim and its context.

6. Benefit from a long stated update window—but check the model
Google says Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, but the exact schedule depends on the device. Look up the update end date for the specific model rather than assuming every Chromebook has the same support remaining. Eligible devices released before 2021 may offer an opt-in to extended updates for ten years from platform release. There is a trade-off: opting in removes Android apps and Google Play Store access. Google explains the conditions in its extended updates support guidance.
7. Get a portable computer with battery-life potential
Google advertises “Up to 10 hours of battery” for Chromebooks. It says actual battery life may be lower and varies significantly with network conditions, location, settings, and usage. Treat that figure as a vendor claim, not a guaranteed workday or a comparison with a specific Windows or Mac laptop. If battery life matters to your decision, look for independent results for the exact model and conditions you expect to use.

8. Choose among laptops, convertibles, and tiers
Chromebooks come as conventional laptops, 2-in-1 convertibles, and tablets. Google also distinguishes standard Chromebooks from Chromebook Plus. Its overview describes page-level storage baselines of 32GB or more for standard Chromebooks and 128GB or more for Chromebook Plus; these broad tier descriptions are not a guarantee for every model or configuration. Compare the device itself: screen, keyboard, memory, storage, ports, weight, and update end date. A tier label alone does not establish that a particular model will suit your workload. Google’s Chromebook overview describes the categories.
9. Explore creative apps, streaming, and games
Google lists photo, video, and music tools, streaming apps, Android games, and cloud gaming services among Chromebook uses. The available experience depends on the app, service, device, and connection: some options require a subscription or internet access, and some need particular specifications. Google notes that GeForce NOW is available only on certain Chromebooks. This is a wider set of options than basic browsing, but it does not mean every PC game or professional desktop creative application will run. Check the requirements for each app or service in Google’s Chromebook app and capability guide.

Before switching, check whether your workflow fits
Start with the tasks and software you cannot do without. Then confirm how you will move files, which tasks need to work offline, and whether you rely on Android apps or Google Play. For a particular model, check its update end date and configuration, along with the screen, keyboard, storage, memory, ports, and weight. A Chromebook can be a practical fit when its web and supported apps cover your needs; compatibility should be verified before you leave a computer built around desktop software or specialized peripherals.
