9 Kings is a turn-based, card-driven roguelike kingdom builder where you combine buildings, units, spells, positioning and perks, then send an army to fight rival kings. Its promise of “breaking the game” is about finding powerful synergies—not a guarantee that every run is easy or that balance does not matter. As of October 13, 2026, it was still in Early Access, with developer Sad Socket announcing a planned 1.0 launch for November 12, 2026.

The official materials call it a “fast-paced roguelike kingdom builder” and promote “thousands of insane builds.” Those are descriptions of the intended fantasy, not a promise that every run produces an unstoppable kingdom. Roguelike variation, rival kings and events mean a strong plan still has to respond to what a run presents.
How a run combines cards, kingdom-building and battles
9 Kings blends turn-based roguelike deckbuilding with auto-battler, tower-defense and city-building elements. Cards are the means of developing your kingdom and its forces; the resulting army then fights opposing kings. The game’s strategic choices span several connected parts of a build:

The official wiki describes standard single-player runs as lasting 33 turns, followed by an optional endless mode. It also lists multiplayer and quest mode. These formats suit different appetites: a defined run gives a contained challenge, endless play extends a kingdom’s development, multiplayer adds competition, and quests provide structured objectives.

Sad Socket’s September 16, 2026 announcement listed four modes for the planned 1.0 release: classic single-player, multiplayer, quest mode and a new Joker custom mode. The announcement makes Joker a planned addition at that point; it should not be treated as already available before the stated release.

As of October 13, 2026, 9 Kings remained in Early Access. The official announcements identified version 0.9.8 as current, with patch #31 dated October 7. That patch covered quality-of-life and balance improvements, addressed remaining known critical bugs, and said 1.0 was expected the following month.

On September 16, Sad Socket announced that the game would leave Early Access and launch in 1.0 on November 12, 2026. The same announcement set out these developer targets for the release:

These are Sad Socket’s announced 1.0 scope figures, not independently verified counts of content already shipped. The Steam listing describes the Early Access version as fully playable and says development uses Early Access to expand and improve the game with community feedback. An older Steam Q&A said there was no set exit date at the time; the later September 2026 announcement is the relevant schedule update.
