For messaging on an Xbox console from the couch, a controller-mounted Xbox Chatpad is the better-shaped tool. It was designed to keep a backlit keypad and headset controls on the controller, so you can type without putting the gamepad down.
The 8BitDo Retro 87 Xbox Edition is a conventional 87-key mechanical keyboard. Its official compatibility list names Windows 10 (version 1903 or later) and Android 9.0 or later, not Xbox consoles. Xbox branding on the product does not establish console support. Choose it for a desk-based Windows or Android setup, or buy it for Xbox only after confirming that your exact console, adapter and software combination recognizes it.

The short answer
These products solve different physical problems. The 8BitDo Retro 87 gives you a familiar desktop keyboard with mechanical switches, three connection modes and programmable buttons. An Xbox Chatpad is a small keypad that clips into an Xbox wireless controller and keeps text entry within reach of your thumbs.
If your priority is sending Xbox messages while holding a controller, the Chatpad form factor is the logical choice. If you type at a desk, switch between a computer and Android device, or want a full-size mechanical layout, the 8BitDo is the more versatile keyboard. There is no controlled, apples-to-apples typing-speed study for these two devices, so claims that one is objectively faster would go beyond the available evidence.

Start with compatibility, not the word “Xbox”
The most important distinction is between an Xbox-themed product and a product that Microsoft lists as compatible with an Xbox console.
What the 8BitDo specification actually says
8BitDo’s product specification lists Windows 10 (1903 and above) and Android 9.0 and above for the Retro 87 Xbox Edition. It also lists Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4 GHz wireless and wired USB connectivity. Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles are not named in that compatibility list.
That omission matters. A keyboard can pair successfully with a Windows PC and still fail to enumerate as a usable text-input device on a console. The Xbox-styled colorway, Xbox keys or included software do not change the published operating-system requirement. Treat Xbox-console support as unconfirmed unless 8BitDo or Microsoft documents your exact model and connection path.

In an August 2015 Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft described the Xbox One Chatpad as plugging into an Xbox One wireless controller. The announcement said it was compatible with all Xbox One controllers and worked with Xbox One and Windows 10. It described a backlit keypad, headset audio controls, two programmable keys and an included chat/mono headset.
Those statements are historical launch information. They establish the accessory’s intended Xbox One design, but they do not prove that new retail stock exists today or that every later Xbox controller and console generation supports it. Compatibility with Xbox Series consoles, third-party controllers or current dashboard revisions should be verified for the specific listing before purchase.
Do not confuse the Xbox 360 accessory with the Xbox One model
The older Xbox 360 Chatpad is a separate product. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 manual says it attaches to wired or wireless Xbox 360 controllers for text messaging and other text entry and describes the keypad as optimized for fast, thumbs-only typing. That manual should not be read as a current compatibility statement for Xbox One or Xbox Series hardware.

The table shows why these are not direct substitutes in every situation. One is a complete desktop keyboard; the other is an input accessory for a gamepad.
Messaging from the couch: where the Chatpad has the advantage
It keeps both hands in the controller position
A controller-mounted keypad places the letters beneath your thumbs while the controller remains in your hands. For a short reply, party invitation or code, that arrangement avoids reaching for a coffee-table keyboard or balancing a full keyboard on your lap.
Backlighting helps in a dark room
The Xbox One announcement specifically called out a backlit keypad. That is useful in a living-room environment where a large keyboard may be hard to see without turning on a lamp. Backlighting does not make the keys full size, but it reduces the time spent hunting for them.
Headset controls are part of the same accessory
The announced Chatpad included headset audio controls and a chat/mono headset. Keeping text and voice controls near the controller can be convenient when you are switching between a party conversation and a typed message.
Thumb typing has a ceiling
A compact keypad favors short bursts. Longer messages require more thumb travel and more attention than touch-typing on a desktop keyboard. The Xbox 360 manual’s “thumbs-only” description explains the intended technique, but it is not a measured speed comparison with the 8BitDo.
Typing at a desk: where the 8BitDo is the better fit
It uses a conventional 87-key layout
The Retro 87 has the familiar rows, modifiers and navigation cluster expected from a compact desktop keyboard. That makes it easier to use normal touch-typing habits for long messages, forum posts, passwords or work while a game runs on another screen.

Mechanical keys change the feel, not the console support
Mechanical switches can provide clearer key travel and tactile feedback than a tiny controller keypad. The typing experience may feel more deliberate and comfortable for extended sessions, but the published specifications do not establish a comparative speed, noise or fatigue result against a Chatpad.
Three connection methods add flexibility
- Bluetooth 5.0: useful for supported Windows or Android devices without a cable.
- 2.4 GHz wireless: suitable when you want a dedicated wireless receiver rather than Bluetooth pairing.
- Wired USB: the simplest option for a desk and the easiest way to avoid wireless pairing variables.
Those modes are meaningful for a computer or Android tablet. They do not, by themselves, make the keyboard an Xbox-console accessory.
Programmable buttons are a desktop bonus
8BitDo lists programmable Dual Super Buttons. They can add shortcuts or macros in a supported software environment, which is useful at a desk. A programmable control does not replace the controller integration that makes a Chatpad convenient on a sofa.

How to verify an Xbox setup before buying
- Identify the console and controller. Write down whether you have an Xbox One, Xbox Series X or Series S, and whether the controller is Microsoft-made or third-party.
- Check the accessory’s own compatibility statement. Look for the exact console generation and controller family, not merely “Xbox” in the product name.
- Confirm the connection path. A Chatpad attaches to a controller; the Retro 87 relies on Bluetooth, its 2.4 GHz receiver or USB. Console USB ports and wireless stacks do not guarantee support for every keyboard model.
- Check the retailer’s return policy. This is especially important for a used or old Chatpad, because launch-era compatibility and current stock are different questions.
- Test text entry in the actual app. Dashboard search, direct messages, party chat and individual games can expose different keyboard-support behavior.
Do not infer success from the keyboard pairing to a nearby laptop. Pairing proves only that the laptop accepted it.
Using a Chatpad safely and comfortably
Attach it without forcing the connector
Power down or disconnect the controller if the accessory instructions require it, align the Chatpad with the controller’s expansion port and press evenly until it is seated. If it does not slide into place, stop; a bent connector can damage both devices.
Check the headset and audio controls separately
The Xbox announcement treated headset controls as a feature of the accessory. After attachment, verify that the console recognizes the headset, that microphone mute works and that game and chat volume behave as expected. A keypad that types but has defective audio controls is not fully meeting the original use case.

Use it for the message length it suits
For a sentence, invitation or code, thumbs-only entry can be convenient. For a long explanation, consider switching to a desk keyboard, the Xbox mobile app or another supported text-entry method rather than fighting the compact layout.

Setting up the 8BitDo on its stated platforms
- Windows: confirm that the PC runs Windows 10 version 1903 or later, then choose wired USB, Bluetooth 5.0 or the 2.4 GHz receiver according to the keyboard instructions.
- Android: confirm Android 9.0 or later, enable the selected wireless method in system settings and complete pairing when the keyboard appears.
- Wired troubleshooting: try a direct USB port rather than an unpowered hub, then test text entry in a basic text field.
- Wireless troubleshooting: remove stale pairings, charge or replace the keyboard’s power source as applicable, and keep the receiver or device within normal desk distance.
- Xbox testing: only proceed if the exact console and connection method are documented as supported. If the keyboard is not recognized, do not treat that as a defect when Xbox-console support was never listed.
The product’s programmable controls may require 8BitDo software on a supported computer. Configure them on the platform for which the software is provided; a console may not expose those settings.

Windows Central’s October 2026 review reported a $119.99 US retail price and £99.99 UK retail price for the Retro 87, plus an $89.99 US Amazon sale price at the time of publication. The sale figure was a snapshot, not a permanent price, and regional taxes, shipping and inventory can change the checkout total.
Xbox Wire’s August 2015 announcement gave the Chatpad an expected US price of $34.99. That number belongs to the original launch period. It should not be used as a current-market valuation for new, used or refurbished units. Current Chatpad stock, seller condition and newer-console compatibility were not established here, so confirm all three before paying a premium for an old accessory.
The lower historical price of a Chatpad does not automatically make it the cheaper purchase today. Scarcity can reverse the difference, while a new mechanical keyboard may include a warranty and several connection modes that an aging controller accessory does not.

Mistake: treating a 2015 announcement as a current guarantee
Fix: separate the original Xbox One compatibility statement from present-day stock and Xbox Series support. Verify the exact listing and console generation.
Mistake: expecting a Chatpad to replace a full keyboard
Fix: use it for short controller-held messages and codes. Choose a conventional keyboard when you regularly write long text.
Mistake: expecting a desktop keyboard to feel natural on a sofa
Fix: measure where it will sit, whether you can use it without a table and whether you are willing to put down the controller. The Retro 87’s 87-key desktop form is an inference about placement, not a laboratory comfort result.
Mistake: buying on an unverified speed claim
Fix: compare your own message length and posture. No cited source supplies a controlled typing-speed comparison between the two products.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose the Chatpad when controller-in-hand messaging, backlighting and integrated headset controls matter most, and your exact Xbox setup is confirmed compatible.
- Choose the Retro 87 when Windows or Android is the primary platform, you want mechanical keys and you will type at a desk.
- Pause the purchase when you have an Xbox Series console but no current compatibility statement for either device.
- Budget using today’s listing, condition and return policy; do not treat the 2015 Chatpad price or a time-limited keyboard sale as a guarantee.
Bottom line for the two most common buyers
If you play Xbox from a sofa
Start with a Chatpad that is explicitly listed for your console and controller. Its physical design matches the task better than a desktop keyboard, but confirm current availability and generation support before ordering.
If you game and message at a desk
Start with the 8BitDo Retro 87 for Windows or Android. Its 87-key layout and three connection options make it the more capable general keyboard. For Xbox-console messaging, however, treat compatibility as unproven until the manufacturer or console documentation says otherwise.
