Recommended Free Tools
There is no universal “best” WooCommerce payment gateway: the right choice depends on where your business is based, what your customers need to pay with, and whether you sell subscriptions or in person. This 2026 shortlist covers eight options documented in WooCommerce resources, not a performance-ranked top eight. Check merchant eligibility, current fees, and the exact extension’s features before you decide.
What a WooCommerce payment gateway does
A payment gateway is the plugin connection between your WooCommerce store and a payment processor. The processor handles payment processing and sets its own account terms and fees; those costs are separate from any gateway extension charge. A free plugin, therefore, does not mean free payment processing. See WooCommerce’s guide to choosing a payment option.

Eight WooCommerce payment gateways to consider
These options appear in official WooCommerce documentation, but the sources do not establish a universal ranking or independently compare reliability, customer satisfaction, or performance. Availability and features can vary by country, extension, and version.
1. WooPayments
Consider it if you want to manage transaction and payout information in WordPress admin. WooPayments is available only to merchants in supported countries, and its fees vary by merchant and customer country, currency, and payment method. Its merchants do not receive the full Stripe dashboard or Stripe API keys. Review the WooPayments compatibility information and the current fee schedule for your country.
#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
2. Stripe for WooCommerce
The official Stripe extension documents card payments, express checkout methods, local payment methods, and buy-now-pay-later methods. WooCommerce says the regular Stripe plugin supports merchants in more countries than WooPayments. Stripe determines processing fees; check its current terms and rates for your market. The extension connects to standard Stripe accounts, unlike WooPayments’ WordPress-centered account experience. See Stripe for WooCommerce documentation.
3. PayPal Payments for WooCommerce
WooCommerce lists PayPal Payments in its subscription-gateway documentation. Check the current extension requirements, supported countries, payment methods, and the specific recurring-payment features your store needs before adopting it.
4. Square for WooCommerce
Square appears in WooCommerce’s subscription gateway table, which distinguishes basic from advanced subscription capabilities. Verify which features apply to the current extension and whether Square supports your business location and payment needs. In-person sales matter only if you also need point-of-sale payments.
Rank #2
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
5. Authorize.Net for WooCommerce
Authorize.Net is listed in WooCommerce’s subscription gateway table. Its fit depends on merchant eligibility, processor terms, fees, and the specific extension’s current capabilities; the listing alone does not establish that it is available or cost-effective in every country.
6. Amazon Pay for WooCommerce
Amazon Pay appears in WooCommerce’s subscription table, and WooPayments’ fee documentation includes it in certain country schedules. Confirm current merchant-country availability, regional fees, and whether the extension supports the payment flow and recurring features you require.
7. Mollie Payments for WooCommerce
Mollie is listed in WooCommerce’s subscription gateway documentation. Its local payment methods, merchant eligibility, fees, and terms are regional, so check the current information for your business country and target customers before choosing it.
Rank #3

8. Klarna Checkout for WooCommerce
Klarna Checkout is listed in the subscription table, but that does not mean pricing, availability, or subscription capabilities are identical across markets. Confirm those details for your country and the exact extension version.
WooCommerce’s subscription payment gateway table also lists other providers. It reflects official extensions and their latest versions; third-party integrations, hosted checkouts, or outdated versions may work differently.
How to choose the right gateway for your store
1. Check merchant eligibility and customer reach
Start with your business’s country: a provider may accept customers internationally while limiting which countries can open merchant accounts. Then check the customer countries, settlement currencies, and local payment methods that matter to your store. WooCommerce’s selection guide and WooPayments comparison information explain why availability should be checked before comparing features.
Rank #4
- USB interface, keyboard emulation, no need to install software to read, configuration software for changing settings available.
- Read data from all 3 tracks, high and low coercivity cards, ISO7811, AAMVA, CA DMV and most magnetic card data formats.
- Work on Windows, Mac and other USB capable systems. Work with TXT, notepad, Word, Excel, POS systems and son on.
- Compact size, with 145cm USB cord, two 3mm-diameter screw holes for fixing at the bottom, a LED indicator light
- Perfect for POS, Banking, Loyalty, Access Control, ID verification and other applications.
2. Compare the full cost, not a headline rate
Account for plugin or extension costs, setup or signup charges, monthly or annual charges, transaction rates and fixed fees, international-payment surcharges, currency conversion, disputes, and card-reader costs if you need in-person payments. These charges can vary by country, payment method, currency, and customer location. WooPayments’ fee schedule gives country-specific details; Stripe’s extension documentation directs merchants to Stripe for transaction pricing. Confirm current rates directly before budgeting.
3. Match payment methods to the checkout your customers need
Check whether the extension supports the cards, digital wallets or express checkout, regional methods, and buy-now-pay-later options your customers expect. A provider’s general feature list does not establish that every method is enabled in every country or currency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Decide where you need account management and reporting
Choose based on the workflow you need: WooPayments puts transaction and payout information in WordPress admin, while a standard Stripe account offers the Stripe dashboard and API credentials. If your business depends on processor-side reporting or API access, verify that the account arrangement supplies it.
Best Value
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
5. Verify recurring-payment support for your exact extension
If you sell subscriptions, distinguish automatic renewals from advanced subscription features. Check the current WooCommerce table and extension documentation for the precise version and features you need. WooCommerce warns that third-party hosted checkouts or integrations and outdated versions may not provide the automatic recurring-payment support shown for official extensions.
6. Add point-of-sale needs only if you sell in person
For stores with physical sales, check POS compatibility, card-reader availability, hardware costs, and in-person processing fees. WooPayments’ fee page describes separate in-person charges and, in some locations, active card-reader fees. If you sell only online, do not let POS features outweigh the online requirements that matter to you.
7. Understand the checkout flow and your security responsibilities
A redirect checkout sends the customer to the gateway’s site and returns them to your store; a direct checkout keeps payment on your store site. WooCommerce says direct payment requires SSL as part of PCI compliance and reminds store owners that protecting sensitive customer information remains their responsibility. Choosing a gateway alone does not make a store secure or establish PCI compliance. See the WooCommerce payment-option guide.
How many payment gateways should you offer?
WooCommerce frames this as a store-specific choice, not a fixed number. Start with the gateway that meets your merchant eligibility, customer payment, cost, and operational needs. Add another only when it serves a clear purpose—such as covering a meaningful local payment method or offering an alternative customers need—and account for the extra setup and reconciliation work.
