Prepare for holiday sales by forecasting demand, coordinating suppliers and staff, checking how customers find and buy from you, and reviewing results afterward. The right plan depends on whether you sell in person, online, ship products, or provide services—there is no single inventory target or promotion mix that fits every business.
1. Forecast inventory and operating supplies
Start with last season’s orders and sales. They can help you estimate which products customers may want and what you will need to keep operations running. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) advises that “Reviewing last year’s orders and sales figures can give you an accurate picture of the supplies you’ll need” in its November 18, 2024 holiday-preparation guidance. Treat past results as a planning baseline, not a guarantee that this year will match.

Include the supplies needed to fulfill orders, not just items for sale. If you ship physical products, review packaging such as corrugated shipping boxes and choose dimensions and strength appropriate to what you send. If this is your first holiday season, ask other business owners in your network for a rough baseline rather than pretending you have historical data.

2. Set schedules, hours, and seasonal staffing
Decide whether holiday demand calls for adjusted business hours, additional coverage, or seasonal help. Use prior demand, current staffing, and the work involved in serving customers and fulfilling orders to make that decision. A storefront may need more coverage during busy shopping periods; an online shop may need help with packing and customer questions; a service business may need to manage appointment availability.

5. Choose promotions that fit your business
Use your channels to explain what makes your business distinctive and to share seasonal offers when they make sense. A promotion should suit your margins, capacity, and customers; a discount is not automatically the right choice. Keep the offer and its terms clear wherever you advertise it.

Treat it as a figure reported by the SBA, not a universal forecast of demand for your business.
6. Prepare the in-person customer experience
If customers visit a physical location, check the basics that shape their visit: signs, seasonal presentation, cleanliness, and whether the space is ready for expected traffic. Consider an in-store event only if it fits your audience, staffing, and operating capacity. These storefront steps are less relevant to online-only businesses and many service providers; adapt the plan to the way your customers interact with you.
