8 Reasons You Should Use a VPN in 2026 (Expert’s Advice)

A VPN is worth using in two situations: when you need an encrypted path between your device and a server over a network you don’t control, and when your employer requires an approved VPN to reach internal systems. Outside those cases, a VPN is an optional layer with specific trade-offs, not a general-purpose safety switch. The reasons below separate what a VPN does well from the claims it cannot support.

What a VPN actually does

A consumer VPN app routes your device’s internet traffic through servers that the VPN provider operates. Some apps encrypt that traffic between your device and the provider’s server. Your local Wi-Fi operator or internet service provider can then see a connection to the VPN server rather than the content of what you are doing, at least for traffic that the app encrypts.

That protection comes with a shift in trust. The provider now sits in a privileged position: it can see your traffic in the clear at its own end of the connection. A VPN therefore moves trust from your network operator to the company running the VPN, and whether that is a good trade depends on who that company is and what it does with the data it handles. The Federal Trade Commission’s business guidance on VPN apps, published in February 2018, makes this point directly, and it still describes the core model.

Public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe

Older advice warned against any public Wi-Fi. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance, “Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know” (approximately 2023), takes a more accurate position: public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is now widespread. The practical check is simple. Look for HTTPS in the address bar or the lock icon before you enter passwords or payment details, and keep your device software current.

The FTC’s public Wi-Fi video transcript states the mechanism plainly: a secure website encrypts the information sent to it even when the network itself does not. That is why HTTPS, not a VPN, is the first defence for ordinary browsing. A VPN becomes a sensible extra layer in specific cases, such as an unfamiliar network where you must send traffic that is not protected by HTTPS, or where you do not trust the network operator.

Consumer VPN apps and employer-managed VPNs are different tools

Readers often hear “VPN” and assume one product. The two main types differ in who controls them, who you trust, and what they are for.

Feature Consumer VPN app Employer-managed remote-access VPN
Who chooses and configures it You, from a commercial provider Your organization’s IT or security team
Who operates the server The VPN provider The organization or its approved service
Main purpose Encrypt traffic between your device and the provider on networks you do not control Give authorized users access to internal systems from outside the office
Trust you extend To the provider’s data handling, logging and security practices To the organization’s approved access policy and controls
Key controls to check Encryption claims, app permissions, privacy policy, third-party data sharing Approved access scope, endpoint compliance checks, secure protocol settings, MFA, access revocation
Governing guidance FTC business guidance on VPN apps (February 2018) FTC small-business secure remote access guidance (2019) and CISA TIC 3.0 Remote User Use Case v2.2 (July 2025)

A consumer subscription does not satisfy an employer’s requirement, and an employer’s configured VPN is not a privacy tool for personal browsing. If you are connecting to work systems, use the access method your organization approves.

Eight reasons to consider a VPN

These are practical use cases rather than an official list. Each one notes whether it applies to a consumer app, an employer VPN, or both.

1. Encrypt your connection on a network you don’t control (consumer)

If a VPN app encrypts traffic, someone monitoring an open Wi-Fi network cannot read the traffic between your device and the VPN server. This is the clearest benefit of a consumer VPN. It matters most when the destination traffic is not already protected by HTTPS, and it is an addition to HTTPS, not a replacement for it.

2. Reach your employer’s network from elsewhere (employer)

CISA’s July 2025 guidance on Trusted Internet Connections describes a VPN as one mechanism for protecting communications that cross public or unprotected networks in remote access. The FTC’s small-business guidance also recommends secure remote connections for employees and vendors. This is the most established professional use of a VPN.

3. Limit what the Wi-Fi operator can read from your traffic (consumer)

A VPN can conceal traffic content from the operator of the Wi-Fi network you are using. HTTPS already hides the content of most web pages from that operator, so the real difference is for traffic that is not encrypted end to end. Even with a VPN, the operator can still see that you are connecting to a VPN server, and the VPN provider now sees the traffic you send through it.

4. Limit what your internet service provider sees about content (consumer)

The FTC states that VPN apps typically obscure traffic content from an ISP. The trade-off is that your traffic now passes through provider-controlled servers. You have exchanged one intermediary for another, and you should choose the one you trust more.

5. Use a consistent secure-access method while traveling or working remotely (employer)

For organization-owned or sensitive systems, the approved VPN or secure-access solution is the right method. CISA’s guidance pairs VPN use with secure protocols, multi-factor authentication, endpoint checks, and controlled access. Using the same approved method everywhere is the point; a personal app that you switch on ad hoc does not meet that standard.

  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

6. Make your traffic appear to come from the VPN server’s location (consumer)

The FTC explains that traffic can appear to originate from the VPN provider’s servers. This is a routing fact. It does not guarantee that a particular streaming service will show you its catalogue or that a platform will allow the connection, since platforms set their own rules.

7. Add a layer when a device joins a third-party network (consumer and employer)

FTC and CISA material treat a VPN as one possible protection in public-network and remote-access settings. Both also recommend other measures: HTTPS, current software, a firewall, multi-factor authentication, and organizational controls. A VPN works alongside those measures, not in place of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Meet an organization’s remote-access requirement (employer)

Businesses and agencies may require an approved VPN before users can reach internal services. What matters in that case is the organization’s configuration and policy. A consumer subscription is not equivalent, and it will not satisfy that requirement.

What a VPN does not do

  • It does not make you anonymous. Websites can identify you from information you share, such as account logins, and VPN use itself can be detectable.
  • It does not stop malware. A VPN encrypts a route; it does not inspect files or block malicious downloads.
  • It does not protect against every tracking method. Cookies, logins, and browser fingerprinting operate independently of the network path.
  • It does not guarantee access to geo-restricted content. Access depends on each service’s rules.
  • It does not establish that a provider is trustworthy. Reputation, data handling, and logging practices must be checked separately.

How to vet a consumer VPN app

The FTC’s app-evaluation criteria point to four questions. Work through them before you install anything.

  1. Identify the developer. Confirm who runs the company and where it is accountable.
  2. Review the app’s permissions. A VPN app can see internet traffic, so check every permission it requests and whether it needs them.
  3. Confirm the encryption claims. Check which traffic is encrypted between your device and the provider’s server, and whether the app describes this clearly.
  4. Read the privacy policy. Look for what data is collected, whether it is logged, and whether it is shared with third parties.

Passing these checks does not prove that a provider’s practices match its promises. This article does not evaluate any named provider.

Home network hardware: an optional step, not a substitute

Some readers look at a “VPN router” to protect every device at home. The FTC’s guidance on home Wi-Fi supports securing the router generally and using WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. It does not establish what any specific VPN router model can do. Buying a router does not include a VPN subscription, and you still need a VPN service and its configuration.

For most households, the first gains come from current firmware, a strong Wi-Fi password, and WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. A VPN router is worth considering only if you have a specific need to route all home devices through a VPN, and you should confirm the router’s capabilities with its manufacturer before buying.
