8 Google Search Tips to Find More Relevant Results in 2026

Use a simple query first, then add only the refinements your task needs: an exact phrase, a site, a date range, or a result type. These steps can make useful results easier to find, but no search query guarantees a particular answer. Google’s own guidance notes that results depend on context and that a helpful page may not match every word you typed.

1. Start with the main idea, then adjust the wording

Begin with a short query that names the subject. If results are too broad, add a detail that distinguishes what you need, such as a product model, location, or document type. If your query returns very few credible matches, simplify it or use broader wording; Google recommends trying more generic terms when a search is too specific.

Use terms a relevant page is likely to contain. For example, search for “headache” rather than the conversational phrase “my head hurts” when looking for general information about the condition. Google says spelling and capitalization are usually handled automatically, so choosing meaningful terms is generally more useful than carefully correcting capitalization.

2. How do I search for an exact phrase on Google?

Put quotation marks around the precise words you want to find, such as "installation instructions". This is useful for a title, name, or distinctive wording where the exact phrase matters. Quotes narrow the search; remove them if relevant pages disappear or the wording might vary.

3. How do I search only one website on Google?

Use site: followed immediately by a domain, then add your topic. For example, site:example.com return policy focuses the search on pages Google finds from that website. There must be no space after the colon. This is a way to narrow results, not a guarantee that the site has an answer or that every matching page will appear.

4. How do I exclude a word or website from results?

Put a minus sign directly before a term to exclude results associated with it. For example, jaguar speed -car can help when you mean the animal rather than the vehicle. You can also exclude a site with -site:example.com. If the exclusion removes useful pages too, delete it and try a more specific positive term instead.

5. How can I find recent or older pages, or a PDF?

Use date operators when publication timing matters. after:2025-01-01 and before:2026-01-01 can constrain results to a period; combine them to define a range. To look for PDFs, add filetype:pdf, as in site:example.com safety guide filetype:pdf. Enter the operator and value without a space after the colon.

Operators help narrow a search, but check the date and file format on the page or document itself before relying on them. A date displayed in results or a matching file extension does not by itself establish that a document is current or authoritative.

6. Pick the right result type and add local or language context

When the format matters, use the available result filters, such as Images, Maps, News, Videos, or Web. For a nearby service or place, include the city or region in the query. If you need results in a particular language, use Search settings or Advanced Search language options.

Google’s available filters and their order can change, so the controls may not look exactly the same for every person or query. Adding a location or language can make results more relevant to your situation, but may also leave out useful pages from elsewhere.

7. Check why Google matched a result

For some results, open the More or information panel and look at “Your search & this result.” It may explain which terms, related terms, links, location, language, date, or content type contributed to the match. A related-term match can help explain why a page appeared even if it does not contain every word in your query.

Google Search Help says, “Google Search tries to find content that matches every word in your search.” The same guidance notes that helpful results sometimes do not exactly match all the terms. Treat the panel as a clue, not proof: its explanation can be inaccurate or stale if a page has changed or language detection did not work as expected. A high position in results is not evidence on its own that a page is correct.

8. Why are my Google results different from someone else’s?

Search results can vary with time, location, language, device, recent searches, and personalization. For some searches when signed in, Google offers “Try without” as a way to compare with a non-personalized result set without changing account settings. It is a comparison, not a guarantee that either set is complete or correct.

For a new or fast-moving subject, reliable information may appear later, so check again when timing matters. If you want to filter explicit material, SafeSearch is available in Search settings. For claims with meaningful consequences, compare credible sources rather than relying on a single result.

How to choose which refinement to use

What you need Try Trade-off
Specific wording, title, or name Quotation marks around the phrase May miss pages that use different wording
Pages from one website site:example.com Only narrows to pages Google finds for that site
Fewer results about an unrelated meaning -term or -site:example.com May exclude a page that also discusses the unwanted term or site
A particular time period after:YYYY-MM-DD and/or before:YYYY-MM-DD Still verify the date on the source itself
A specific document format filetype:pdf Does not establish that the document is reliable or current
A format, place, or language Result filters, a location in the query, or language settings Available filters vary; added context can narrow coverage

Apply one refinement at a time. If the results become too sparse, remove the last constraint, broaden the wording, or return to the core subject.
