The best website traffic checker depends on whose traffic you need. For a site you control, Google Analytics 4 is the source for measured users, sessions, conversions and revenue, while Google Search Console reports Google Search performance. For a competitor, no public tool can reveal exact private analytics: Similarweb, Semrush, Ahrefs and other services provide modeled estimates. Use those numbers directionally, not as audited facts.
What “website traffic” actually measures
Traffic can mean users, new users, sessions, visits, pageviews, engaged sessions, organic clicks, referrals, paid visits, social visits, direct visits, AI referrals, conversions or revenue. These are not interchangeable. An SEO platform may estimate clicks generated by ranking keywords; a competitive-intelligence platform may estimate total visits across several channels; first-party analytics records what your implementation measured after consent choices, filters and tracking limitations.

1. Google Analytics 4: best for your own website
GA4 is the correct starting point when you administer the site. It measures configured activity rather than estimating a competitor’s audience. Tracking can still be affected by consent settings, ad blockers, tag failures, referral exclusions and cross-domain configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set it up
- Create or access a property at analytics.google.com.
- Install the Google tag or your CMS integration.
- Confirm incoming data in Reports → Realtime.
- Use Reports → Acquisition for traffic sources and Reports → Engagement for landing pages and events.
- Use Explore for funnels and comparisons, then mark important events as conversions (also called key events in current GA4 terminology).
Verdict: Use GA4 for measured visits, behavior and outcomes—not competitor research.
#1 Best Overall
2. Similarweb: best for broad competitor estimates
Similarweb’s public checker supports domain lookups, traffic-source analysis, comparisons and competitor research at similarweb.com/website/. Availability and detail vary by domain, geography and plan. Popular sites generally produce steadier estimates than small or specialized sites.
How to use it
- Enter the complete domain and check whether the result is the root domain or a subdomain.
- Review the available traffic estimate and multi-month trend.
- Inspect sources, geography, engagement, referrals and similar sites.
- Compare competitors using the same country, device and period.
Best for: market sizing, audience comparison and a broad view of channels. Limitation: it is modeled intelligence, not verified analytics. Similarweb’s page references a SparkToro comparison; that vendor-cited study is not proof of universal accuracy.
3. Semrush: best when traffic research supports SEO and PPC
Semrush combines Traffic Analytics with keyword, advertising, backlink and reporting workflows. Enter a domain in the relevant Traffic & Market report, select country, device and date range, and inspect visits, channels, referrals, top pages, audience overlap and competitors. Cross-check organic findings in Organic Research and Keyword Gap.
The public Traffic & Market pricing page displayed a Base Report at $10 per month and a Pro Report at $20 per month when checked in August 2026. Those are report products, not the price of every Semrush subscription or all platform features: official pricing.
Verdict: a strong agency and marketing-research choice when estimated traffic must connect to search and paid campaigns.
Rank #2
4. Ahrefs: best for estimated organic traffic
Ahrefs’ Traffic Checker focuses on estimated search traffic, ranking keywords and top-performing content. Its public page advertises batch analysis of up to 200 websites. That estimate should not be compared directly with a total-visit estimate from Similarweb: direct, email, social, referral and paid visits are outside this specific view.
Workflow
- Enter a domain or page.
- Review estimated organic traffic and ranking keywords for the same country and search mode.
- Open top pages and associated queries.
- Use competing pages and backlinks to understand likely traffic sources.
Verdict: choose Ahrefs when “traffic” really means search visibility, content opportunities and links.

5. Google Search Console: best free source for your Google Search traffic
Search Console is first-party data for a verified property, but it covers Google Search performance rather than every visit to the site.
- Open Search Console and add a domain or URL-prefix property.
- Verify ownership with DNS, an HTML file, an HTML tag, or an available Analytics or Tag Manager method.
- Open Performance → Search results.
- Review clicks, impressions, CTR, average position, queries, pages, countries and devices.
- Set a comparison period and export when the table is insufficient.
Verdict: pair it with GA4: Search Console explains Google visibility; GA4 shows what happened after visitors arrived.
6. Ubersuggest: best lower-cost SEO option
Ubersuggest provides keyword-based traffic estimates, top pages, backlinks and rank tracking. Its pricing page showed Individual at $29/month, Business at $49/month and Enterprise at $99/month in August 2026, with different project, search, keyword, crawl and export limits. Prices and limits can change; check the official page. The vendor says it uses multiple data providers and lists no API access plans. Its browser extension displays traffic, Domain Authority, backlinks and keyword information subject to plan limits: extension details.
Rank #3
Verdict: practical for solo marketers and small businesses, but not a replacement for enterprise-scale intelligence.

SpyFu is useful for organic keywords, paid keywords, historical ads and estimated search value. It answers “Where does this competitor appear in search and advertising?” better than “How many total visits did the site receive?” Verify current pricing directly before subscribing.
8. Sitechecker: best for a simpler SEO workflow
Sitechecker places competitor estimates beside audits, rank tracking and site monitoring. It suits teams that want traffic checking as one step in an ongoing SEO process. It is not the strongest choice for market-wide audience measurement or detailed channel analysis; verify current plans and limits on the vendor site.
Choose by the question you need answered
- I own the site: GA4 for all measured activity, then Search Console for Google Search.
- I need competitor total traffic: Similarweb, with identical country, device and date settings.
- I care about organic content: Ahrefs or Semrush.
- I need paid-search intelligence: Semrush or SpyFu.
- I have little budget: GA4, Search Console, public Similarweb and Ahrefs checkers, then limited Ubersuggest.
- I manage clients: Semrush or Similarweb if exports, seats, history and reporting justify the subscription.
- The site is tiny or niche: triangulate several tools and assign low confidence unless the signals agree.
How to check a competitor responsibly
- Use Similarweb for estimated total visits, channels and audience signals.
- Use Semrush or Ahrefs for organic visibility and top content.
- Use SpyFu or Semrush for paid-search evidence.
- Compare trends across several months, not one monthly number.
- Look for agreement in direction rather than identical totals.
- Label confidence as high, medium or low.
- Do not use one estimate alone for an acquisition, valuation, lead-quality or investment decision.
Confidence guide
- High: a large domain, multiple tools agree on direction and the trend is consistent.
- Medium: useful data exists but totals differ materially.
- Low: the site is small, new, geographically unusual, app-led or sparsely reported.
Why traffic estimates disagree
- Vendors use different panels, clickstream partnerships, search models and update schedules.
- “Visit,” “session,” “user,” “pageview” and “click” have different definitions.
- Country, language, device, bot and app coverage varies.
- Small samples require heavier modeling for low-traffic sites.
- Email, dark social, private communities, logged-in products and paywalled areas are difficult to observe.
- Subdomains, redirects, migrations and marketplaces can split or hide activity.
- AI-assistant referrals are an emerging channel, and vendors may define or cover them differently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see a competitor’s exact traffic?
No. Exact visits and conversions require access to that site’s analytics or server data. Public services provide modeled estimates.
What is the best free website traffic checker?
For your own site, use GA4 and Search Console. For a competitor, Similarweb and Ahrefs offer public lookups, but coverage and limits vary and neither is exact.

It can be useful directionally, especially for larger domains, but accuracy varies by traffic level, geography and channel. Treat it as an estimate and compare trends across tools.
Is Ahrefs traffic total traffic?
No. Ahrefs’ public checker emphasizes estimated organic-search traffic, keywords and content, not every direct, referral, social, email and paid visit.
Is Google Analytics better than Similarweb?
For a site you control, yes: GA4 measures configured first-party activity. Similarweb is useful for competitor and market estimates that GA4 cannot provide.
Why do Semrush and Ahrefs show different numbers?
They use different datasets, keyword models, definitions, country settings, update schedules and coverage. Compare direction and trends, not identical totals.
Can traffic checkers detect AI traffic?
Coverage is emerging and definitions differ. A vendor may report referrals, visibility or modeled influence, which are not the same as measured visits.
