Gopalakrishna Subbaiya Pillai, a 75-year-old Thane resident, died while receiving treatment at Sushrusha Hospital after developing chest pain at a Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, according to police accounts reported by news outlets. Police said doctors attributed his death to a heart attack; the reports do not include a medical record or a direct statement from his treating doctor.
What happened at Shivaji Park
The Indian Express and Hindustan Times reported that Pillai attended the protest on Thursday evening, October 1, 2026. The Indian Express said he arrived at about 4:30 p.m. and felt unwell, complaining of chest pain, around 5 p.m. as he approached Gate No. 6. These timings and details are from that outlet’s account.

According to the police account reported by The Indian Express, Pillai’s friend and police personnel came to his aid. A doctor at the venue provided preliminary treatment, after which he was taken to Sushrusha Hospital. He died during treatment there.
What is known about the reported cause of death
Police told news outlets that doctors attributed Pillai’s death to a heart attack. That is an attributed account: the reports reviewed do not provide medical records or a direct statement from a treating doctor. His death followed chest pain at the protest, but the reports do not establish that the protest caused it.

Police procedure and the date discrepancy
Hindustan Times and The Indian Express reported that police registered an accidental death report (ADR) and handed Pillai’s body to his family. The Indian Express said the family raised no objection. An ADR is the procedural step described in those reports; it does not, by itself, establish a medical cause of death.
The Indian Express and Hindustan Times identify the incident as Thursday evening, October 1. Times of India coverage instead labels it Friday, October 2. The date descriptions conflict, so the reports should not be treated as agreeing on the event date.

The outlets identify the event as a protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). India Today describes demands that included the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and says the protest was held without police permission. Those details come from that outlet’s account; the reviewed coverage does not include an official document independently establishing the permission claim.
