You can watch movies and TV channels on a smart TV without adding a streaming subscription by using free, ad-supported apps. Start with your TV’s app store: Tubi and Plex focus on free on-demand titles, while Pluto TV and The Roku Channel also offer live channels. Availability depends on your country and exact TV model, so check the app listing before choosing a service.

1. Try Tubi for on-demand movies and TV
Tubi is a straightforward starting point if you want to browse a library rather than follow a live schedule. The service describes its viewing as free and ad-supported. It lists Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Samsung Smart TVs among supported platforms, although the official supported-device information cited here is for the US.

2. Choose Pluto TV for live channels and movies
Pluto TV combines live, scheduled channels with on-demand movies. It suits viewers who want to switch between a channel guide and a library instead of choosing every title themselves. Its device page lists ways to watch, but support depends on the device and location. Search your smart TV’s app store and check the current local availability before relying on it. 3. Look for The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel is not limited to Roku hardware: Roku lists compatible Samsung Smart TVs and compatible Amazon Fire TV devices as ways to watch it. Roku Support describes the service as having “500+ live channels,” alongside free shows and movies. That is Roku’s own stated figure; it does not establish that every channel or title is available on every device or in every country. Roku Support
4. Use Plex for free live TV or on-demand viewing
Plex offers free, ad-supported live TV as well as free movies and shows. Its support information identifies Roku and fully supported smart TVs as options for live TV, and cautions that smart-TV model compatibility matters. Check Plex’s compatibility guidance for your exact television rather than assuming that every TV from a supported brand can run the live-TV feature. Plex live TV support · Plex free movies and shows

5. Check the TV maker’s own free-channel app
Open the television’s home screen and app store to see whether the manufacturer offers a free channel service. Availability can differ by model and country, so do not assume an app is included just because the TV brand offers one. If there is a built-in guide, browse it to see the current channels and on-demand options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Check other channels built into your TV platform
Some smart-TV platforms surface free channels in a built-in guide or through their own apps. The lineup is platform- and location-dependent, so use the guide currently shown on your TV rather than relying on a channel list from another region or model. A built-in option can be convenient because it may not require installing a separate service app.

Tubi’s US device list, for example, includes Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, but confirm that your specific device and region are supported before purchasing. Tubi supported devices

How to choose and get started
- Search the app store on your exact TV. Use the TV’s home screen or app store and search for the service by name. Device support differs even within a brand.
- Decide whether you want a guide or a library. For scheduled live channels, start with Pluto TV or The Roku Channel; for on-demand browsing, try Tubi or Plex. Plex also offers live TV.
- Check country availability. A service’s supported-device list does not mean its app or full lineup is available everywhere. Review the service’s current device and help pages for your location.
- Expect commercial breaks. Tubi and Plex explicitly describe their free offerings as ad-supported. These are no-subscription options, not necessarily ad-free viewing.
- Update before troubleshooting. If Tubi is installed but misbehaves, update the app and the TV’s operating system. For any app that is missing, confirm model compatibility before considering an external player.
What to keep in mind
- Free libraries and live-channel lineups can change, so check the app’s current guide rather than expecting a fixed catalog.
- Device compatibility and geographic availability are separate: a service may support a platform but not be offered in your country.
- Whether an account is required can vary by service and was not established consistently for these options; check the current sign-in prompt and service guidance.
