Before an international trip, check your roaming plan, choose the SIM or eSIM that will carry data, and prepare your phone for communication and emergencies. The right settings depend on your carrier, destination, device and plan—there is no universally safe roaming switch position.
1. Check your carrier’s international service and charges
Before departure, confirm that your plan supports service in your destination and check the cost and limits for data, calls and texts. Find out whether international roaming is included or requires a pass, and whether charges apply when you receive calls or messages. Many U.S. plans do not include international service by default, according to the U.S. State Department. Apple also advises travelers to ask their carrier about available plans and rates in its roaming guidance.

Verify the terms for your specific destination and travel dates with your carrier. Do not assume that having cellular service at home means your plan will work abroad or that connecting to a foreign network is included in your allowance.

2. Choose the line and SIM or eSIM for mobile data
Decide whether you will use your home carrier’s roaming service or a local SIM or travel eSIM. Compare destination coverage, total cost and included data, whether calls and texts are included, when service can be activated, and what happens to your home number. The State Department and Apple describe roaming and local or travel SIM options, but availability and terms vary by carrier and destination.

Before relying on a replacement SIM or eSIM, check that your phone supports it, is unlocked if required, and is compatible with networks in the destination. Apple explains how to select the cellular-data line on an iPhone with multiple lines in its roaming instructions; options and compatibility depend on the device and carrier.
3. Set data roaming for the line and plan you selected
Data roaming allows a phone to use cellular data on networks outside its home carrier’s coverage. Turn it on only when your carrier or selected plan says roaming is covered or otherwise acceptable to you. If you want to avoid cellular roaming, turn it off for the relevant line—but mobile data may then stop working on that line while it is roaming.

There is no single correct setting for every traveler: some plans include roaming, while others charge for it. Apple recommends checking the plan and carrier terms before changing the setting in its roaming guidance.

4. Prepare apps and Wi-Fi communication
Before leaving, install and sign in to the messaging and calling apps you expect to use. Check how each works: some can communicate over Wi-Fi without a mobile-data plan, as the State Department explains. Wi-Fi calling is not automatically free; carrier and plan rules determine whether charges apply.

Public Wi-Fi may be insecure. Avoid treating an unfamiliar Wi-Fi connection as a private network, and consider whether you need to access sensitive accounts while connected.
5. Set up emergency access and save key contacts
Save emergency contacts, your country’s embassy or consulate, and the local emergency number for your destination. Keep a separate or offline copy so the information is still available if your phone loses service or power. The State Department’s communications advice recommends planning how to reach help while abroad.

Review your phone’s emergency features and location-sharing controls before travel. Device behavior can differ: Google says Pixel Emergency SOS does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on. That limitation is specific to Pixel guidance and should not be assumed to apply to other phones.

6. Install system and app updates before departure
Update your operating system and important apps before you leave, following the State Department’s advice to update devices and apps before departure. Use a trusted connection and allow time to deal with a failed download, restart or app sign-in before you need the phone on the trip. Update availability and menu steps vary by device.

7. Review airplane mode and flight instructions
Follow the airline’s instructions for phone use during the flight. Airplane mode is not a guarantee that every SIM or service configuration will avoid charges; check your carrier’s terms if that matters to you.
If an iPhone has trouble connecting to a roaming network after arrival, Apple describes turning airplane mode on for about 30 seconds and then turning it off as a troubleshooting step in its roaming guidance. This is not a universal pre-trip setting or a substitute for checking your plan.
