There is no defensible universal ranking of the top payment gateway companies in this comparison. The seven names form a practical shortlist, not a claim that they are the seven largest or best: current vendor product information supports detailed profiles of Adyen, Stripe, PayPal Enterprise Payments, Checkout.com and Worldpay, while Fiserv and Global Payments are included as market-relevant providers without enough comparable evidence here to assess their full-stack offerings. The key difference is how much of the payment journey each company says it handles—and whether that matches your business, markets and sales channels.
What “end-to-end” means in payment services
A payment gateway is one link in a larger transaction flow, not a synonym for every payment function. PayPal defines a gateway as a service that facilitates secure, encrypted communication about a transaction between a merchant and its bank and/or processor. More broadly, a payment flow can involve collecting transaction data, acquiring and settling funds for a merchant, moving payments through card networks, and obtaining authorization from the cardholder’s issuer. One provider may bundle several of these roles; another may focus on acceptance, checkout, payouts or orchestration.

For a buyer, the useful question is therefore not simply whether a company calls itself a gateway. Ask which parts of acceptance, processing, acquiring, risk management, settlement and reconciliation its specific product covers in the countries where you operate.
Seven providers to consider
The profiles below reflect capabilities described by the providers or, for Fiserv and Global Payments, their presence in broader industry and buyer-guide lists. Vendor statements establish what a company says its products do; they do not independently prove performance, availability for every merchant or superiority over competitors.

It says the platform spans gateway, risk, processing and acquiring, including local acquiring in key markets. The company states that payouts are available in more than 30 settlement currencies and are typically made within one or two days; it also says its banking infrastructure operates in the US, UK and EU. Availability, payout timing and merchant eligibility depend on market and product, so confirm the terms for your intended setup. See Adyen’s payment-processing information.
Adyen reported processing $43 billion across nearly 200,000 transactions on Black Friday 2025 and claimed 99.9999% uptime for that event. Those are company-reported figures for a particular date, not a comparative independent benchmark. Adyen’s product page.

Its product page lists more than 125 payment methods, availability across 195 countries and 135-plus currencies, and local acquiring coverage in 46 markets. These are vendor-stated figures; the relevant payment methods, currency support and acquiring options may differ by product and market. Stripe’s performance outcomes are also its own claims, not a normalized independent comparison. Review Stripe Payments.
3. PayPal Enterprise Payments
PayPal presents its enterprise platform as combining payment processing, acceptance, risk management and payouts. Listed options include cards, digital wallets, PayPal, Venmo, installment payments, guest checkout and local payment methods. Enterprise pricing is custom, so a public feature list is not enough to estimate the total cost for a particular business. See PayPal Enterprise Payments.

4. Checkout.com
Checkout.com says one integration can provide online gateway services, processing, domestic and international acquiring, and fraud detection. Its product information also references major international card schemes and examples of local cards and processing. The company presents authorization, analytics, security and market-entry benefits, but those are provider claims rather than independently normalized comparisons. Confirm that its acquiring and payment-method coverage fits each target market. See Checkout.com Payments.

Worldpay’s enterprise offering describes online and in-store payment use cases, payment reporting, payout services, currency options and fraud and risk functions. Its customer counts and capability claims are company statements; prospective merchants should verify the particular products, markets and support arrangements available to them. Fiserv appears among payment processors in an IDC MarketScape overview. That supports its relevance as a provider to investigate, but the available information here does not establish a comparable current description of an end-to-end offering. Before shortlisting it, check official product information for the precise gateway, processing, acquiring, risk, settlement and channel capabilities available to your business. Verify current official product information, market availability and product boundaries before treating it as an end-to-end option. CIOPages payment-processing buyer guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a provider for your business
Start with your operating requirements rather than a “top” label. The provider pages describe different combinations of services, and no single set of comparable data establishes a winner across all merchant types.
- Map your sales channels. If you sell both online and in person, verify that the provider supports both and can connect the resulting payment data to your operations. Online-only businesses may put more weight on checkout integration, payment methods and recurring billing; platforms may need payout and split-payment capabilities.
- Check each market separately. Confirm local acquiring, payment methods, settlement currencies and payout schedules for every country you serve. A global coverage statement does not guarantee that every product is available to every merchant in every market.
- Identify the roles you need bundled. Establish whether you need only gateway connectivity or also processing, acquiring, fraud controls, settlement and reconciliation. Ask which entity performs each role and what happens when an outside provider is involved.
- Evaluate risk and authorization tools. Compare fraud screening, dispute handling, authentication and authorization optimization alongside costs. Treat vendor-reported uplift or savings as claims unless an independent, comparable study supports them.
- Get commercial and operational terms in writing. Request pricing, underwriting requirements, reserves, settlement timing, support commitments and contract terms for your actual business model. The information summarized here does not establish normalized pricing across providers.
- Estimate integration effort. Compare the available APIs, prebuilt checkout options and integration model against your technical resources and existing systems. A single integration can simplify architecture, but does not by itself establish that implementation will be simple for your use case.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
The five detailed profiles are based on vendor-authored product information, which is useful for identifying stated capabilities but is not independent proof of performance. The broader evidence places Fiserv and Global Payments among relevant providers, but does not support a like-for-like full-stack comparison for those two. No independent market-share or revenue ranking was established, and the available information is insufficient to score all seven consistently on coverage, risk, settlement, integration, price and support.
Use the list to build a request-for-information shortlist, not to substitute for market-specific due diligence. Ask each candidate to document the exact products, eligible countries, payment methods, settlement arrangements, costs and service terms offered for your business.
