Red question marks in a Valmod HUD usually mean the mod’s UI images failed to load. In the classic Valmod layout, the quickest repair is to back up Data/Config/XUi, replace Windows.xml, controls.xml, and styles.xml with the copies in Valmod’s OFFLINE FILES folder, then restart the game. If those files are missing, do not force the legacy fix into a modern installation: current 7 Days to Die builds use a different XUi layout and renamed files.
Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What the red question marks mean
Valmod’s red question-mark icons are normally placeholders for UI images that the game could not load. They are not, by themselves, evidence that your graphics card, texture quality, or monitor is failing. The legacy Valmod interface could retrieve some image assets from an external image host. If the game could not reach that host, the interface still loaded its XML layout but had no image to display, so a question mark appeared in places such as the toolbar, HUD panels, inventory, or menu windows.

Valmar described two documented causes in a Steam support discussion: a firewall blocking the request, or Tinypic being unavailable. The same explanation noted that the images were fetched from an online link. That means the symptom can appear even when the rest of the mod is installed correctly and the game launches normally.
Valmod later moved its image links from Tinypic to Imgur. LordValmar’s 2016 release note said the change was made because the earlier host had stability problems outside the project’s control. A package that still contains the older links can therefore show the marks when the host is down, blocked, or no longer serves the expected files.

Check which Valmod and game layout you have
The offline-file repair is specific to the older Valmod package structure. Before deleting anything, identify the game build and the Valmod release you installed. A file path that is correct for a 2016-era package may be wrong for a modern 7 Days to Die installation.
- Legacy Valmod layout: the package uses
Data/Config/XUiand commonly containsWindows.xml,controls.xml,styles.xml, plus anOFFLINE FILESsubfolder. - Current UI layout: the game’s documentation separates interface files into
XUi_Common,XUi_Menu, andXUi_InGame. In version 3.0 of the UI system,controls.xmlwas renamedtemplates.xml.
If your installation has the newer folders and templates.xml rather than the three legacy files, stop before applying the old replacement procedure. Installing an old XML set in a new folder can create additional layout errors instead of restoring the missing pictures.
Back up the files before changing them
XML files define the interface, so a small mismatch can affect every screen. Make a reversible copy first rather than editing the live installation without a rollback.
- Record the game build shown by your launcher and the exact Valmod release or archive name.
- Close 7 Days to Die and its launcher.
- Copy the entire Valmod folder to a separate backup location. Keep the original archive too, if you still have it.
- Copy the existing
Data/Config/XUifolder, or at minimum its current UI XML files, to the same backup location. - Use a clearly named backup such as
XUi-before-offline-fixso you can identify it later.
Do not combine files from different Valmod releases. A replacement XML file can refer to image names, windows, or templates that exist only in the release it came from.

Use Valmod’s offline files in the legacy layout
Follow these steps only when your package contains the legacy XUi folder and an OFFLINE FILES subfolder.
- Open the 7 Days to Die installation directory.
- Open
Data, thenConfig, thenXUi. - Confirm that the live folder contains
Windows.xml,controls.xml, andstyles.xml. If one is absent, do not substitute a similarly named file from another release. - Delete the live copies of
Windows.xml,controls.xml, andstyles.xml, or move them into your backup folder instead of permanently deleting them. - In the Valmod package, open
OFFLINE FILES. - Copy that folder’s
Windows.xml,controls.xml, andstyles.xmlinto the liveData/Config/XUifolder. - Start the game and load the affected save or a test world.
- Check the toolbar, HUD panels, inventory, and menu windows. The question marks should be replaced by the bundled UI images if the package and game build match.
The offline files remove the external image-host dependency. They do not repair a fundamentally incompatible Valmod release, missing local assets, or a conflict with another interface mod, so a failed result is a compatibility signal rather than a reason to keep replacing files at random.

| File in the legacy package | Role in the interface | What replacing it changes |
|---|---|---|
styles.xml |
Visual styles used by UI elements | Restores the style definitions expected by the offline package |
controls.xml |
Reusable controls and components | Restores the component definitions referenced by the Valmod windows |
Windows.xml |
Window and panel layouts | Restores the HUD, toolbar, inventory, and menu arrangements |
In the current naming scheme, reusable components are stored in templates.xml, formerly controls.xml. Current documentation also describes xui.xml as the file that assembles window groups. Those naming and folder changes are why copying a legacy trio into a modern installation is unsafe.

Legacy and current XUi structures are not the same
| Question | Older Valmod package | Current 7 Days to Die UI documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Main location | Data/Config/XUi |
Separated locations including XUi_Common, XUi_Menu, and XUi_InGame |
| Reusable component file | controls.xml |
templates.xml after the V3.0 rename |
| Layout file referenced by the offline procedure | Windows.xml |
Distributed through the newer XUi structure and assembled with current definitions |
| Safe repair approach | Use the matching OFFLINE FILES copies |
Use a Valmod or UI mod explicitly built for the installed game build |
The table describes structure, not a promise that any old Valmod release works in every current build. XML names can remain familiar while their expected location, references, or syntax changes. If the package does not document support for your build, treat it as an unverified legacy mod.
If the offline replacement does not remove the marks
Confirm that you copied the right release
Open the Valmod archive you actually installed and compare its OFFLINE FILES contents with the live folder. Do not use offline XML files downloaded from a different Valmod release. The files may point to different window names or image assets, producing missing elements even though the copy operation succeeded.

Check whether you are using a modern folder layout
If the live installation contains XUi_Common, XUi_Menu, or XUi_InGame, or uses templates.xml, restore your backup and remove the legacy replacement. Find a version-matched UI package instead. A modern build may require changes in several current XUi files, not a direct replacement of the three legacy files.
Remove other UI mods temporarily
Two UI mods can overwrite the same XML definitions or expect different templates. Move other UI mods out of the active mod location temporarily, restore a clean copy of the game’s UI files, and test Valmod by itself. If the question marks disappear, reintroduce other UI mods one at a time to identify the conflicting package. Keep the backup so each test starts from a known state.

Inspect the game log for XUi and asset errors
When the offline files are present but the interface still shows placeholders, inspect the log for XUi parsing failures, missing-asset messages, or references to files that are not on the client. The current UI guidance emphasizes that definitions and assets must exist in the client’s mod structure. A log entry naming a missing image or XML file points to an incomplete package or an incorrect path; a parsing error points to a version or syntax mismatch.
Restore clean files if the game develops new UI errors
Stop testing once the game begins showing broader interface failures, such as windows not opening or controls disappearing. Replace the edited files with the backup, verify that the base game starts normally, and then test only a version-compatible mod. Repeatedly layering XML files from different releases makes it harder to determine which definition caused the failure.
Online assets versus offline assets
| Approach | Dependency | Typical failure condition | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online image links | Firewall access and the external image host | The host is unavailable, a request is blocked, or an old link no longer serves the image | Only when the Valmod release still expects those links and the host is reachable |
| Bundled offline files | Correct local XML and image assets in the mod package | The package is incomplete, the files come from another release, or the game build is incompatible | First repair for a matching legacy Valmod installation |
Switching from online to offline files addresses availability and firewall problems; it cannot make a legacy interface definition compatible with a changed game UI system. That distinction explains why the same procedure can fix one installation immediately and fail on another.

Custom UI images are client-side assets. Every player who needs the custom interface must have the compatible mod files installed locally, and the server and clients must agree on the mod version. A server-side installation alone does not guarantee that another client has the XML definitions or image files required to render the interface.

- Verify that the server is using the Valmod release intended for the game build.
- Verify that each client has the same compatible UI files and local assets.
- Do not replace only one client’s XML files with an offline bundle from another release.
- If one player sees question marks while others do not, compare that player’s mod folder and log with a working client before changing the server.
Testing in single-player first can separate a local installation problem from a server-and-client mismatch. Once the offline files render correctly locally, apply the same verified package to the other compatible clients.
When the firewall is actually relevant
A firewall is relevant to the legacy online-image path, not to the bundled offline XML replacement. If the question marks appeared after a network change and the package still references external images, a blocked request is plausible. However, disabling security software permanently is not a reliable repair. The documented workaround is to use the local offline files, which removes the image-host request entirely.
Recommended Free Tools
If you test network access, do so only to confirm the cause and then prefer the offline package. A host outage cannot be repaired from your computer, and an old image host may remain unreliable even after a temporary recovery.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Editing without a backup: you lose an easy rollback and may have to reinstall the mod.
- Mixing releases: XML files from different Valmod archives can reference incompatible windows, controls, or assets.
- Putting files in the wrong folder: a legacy
XUipath is not interchangeable with the current split folders. - Renaming files blindly: changing
controls.xmltotemplates.xmldoes not convert the file’s contents or references. - Blaming graphics settings first: a question mark is usually a missing UI asset, so changing resolution or texture quality does not address the documented cause.
- Leaving conflicting UI mods active: overwritten definitions can make a correct offline bundle appear broken.
- Assuming a successful launch proves compatibility: the game can start while individual XUi windows or images fail later.
A practical decision path
- You have the old
XUifolder andOFFLINE FILES: back up the installation and perform the three-file replacement. - The marks disappear: keep the offline files and retain the backup in case another mod update overwrites them.
- The files are absent or the folders are split: restore any changes and verify that Valmod supports your game build before installing anything else.
- The package is confirmed compatible but the marks remain: isolate other UI mods, inspect the log for XUi or missing-asset errors, and verify that every required client-side asset exists.
- The game develops wider UI failures: roll back to the clean backup and use a version-matched package rather than combining legacy and current definitions.
The central distinction is whether the installation is failing to fetch an otherwise valid image or is using UI definitions that no longer match the game. Offline files solve the first problem. Version matching and conflict isolation solve the second.
