In 7 Days to Die, a “keystone” is the player-made Land Claim Block. Place one to reserve a surrounding area where only you and your allies can place or destroy blocks. The protection is strongest while you are online, changes after you log out, and eventually expires according to server settings. Because defaults have changed between versions and are frequently customized by server hosts, treat the figures below as reported defaults and confirm them in your own build.

What a keystone is
The terms keystone and Land Claim Block describe the same object. The official-labelled wiki entry uses the title “Land Claim Block,” while players commonly call the item a keystone. It is not a separate tool, weapon, or passive character perk: it is a placeable block that records ownership of a patch of land.

You remain the owner, and allied players are treated as authorized users. That makes a claim useful for a permanent base, a temporary mining or building site, or a protected set of workstations on a multiplayer server.
What the claim protects
Building and demolition rights
Protection is about block interaction. Players who are neither the owner nor allies cannot place blocks in the claimed area and cannot destroy the blocks there. The rule applies to ordinary construction and to attempts to dismantle a base. Allies are exempt, so a cooperative group can build and maintain one base without each member placing a separate claim.

The protected footprint
The commonly reported default is a horizontal square measuring 41 by 41 blocks. Sources disagree about how the LandClaimSize number is interpreted: some describe 41 as a radius, while others describe it as the full width. That disagreement is important because it changes the actual edge of the protected area. Do not assume a precise boundary from the number alone; test the edge on the server or inspect the host’s configuration and documentation.
The setting concerns the horizontal footprint. Do not infer a particular vertical height from it unless your server’s documentation states one.

While the owner is online
A placed claim is fully active while its owner is in the game. This is the strongest protection state and is the period in which the claim is intended to provide its normal resistance to damage and unauthorized interaction.
After logout
When the owner leaves, the claim eventually switches to an offline durability state. An optional offline delay controls how many minutes pass before that change. The offline state does not necessarily make a block invulnerable: it applies a durability modifier, so attackers may need more damage or more time than they would against an ordinary block.

Community documentation conflicts on the default modifier. One account describes the default value as four times normal hardness; another interprets the same value as 32 times. The discrepancy may reflect different game versions, different explanations of the setting, or different damage calculations. Check the value and behavior on the server you actually play.
Expiry after a long absence
Offline protection is not automatically permanent. LandClaimExpiryTime determines how long the owner can remain offline before the claim expires. The reported default is measured in real-world days, not in-game days. A server administrator can shorten, lengthen, or disable the practical usefulness of that period by changing the configuration, so a base that is safe on one server may become vulnerable sooner on another.
How many Land Claim Blocks can be active?
You can place more blocks over time, but the game limits the number that remain active simultaneously. The reported limit is three active Land Claim Blocks per player. Placing another claim deactivates the oldest active claim and reduces that older block to one durability. In practice, a fourth placement can therefore stop protecting the oldest site even though its physical block remains in the world.
This distinction explains why players sometimes see several keystones around a map but only a subset still protects their bases. Keep a written list or map marker for your active locations, especially after relocating.

How to craft and place a keystone
Crafting requirements
- Collect five small stones.
- Open the crafting interface and search for Land Claim Block or “keystone,” depending on the interface wording in your version.
- Craft the block and move it to your hotbar.
Older versions supplied a claim as a starting item. That changed with version 1.0, after which players craft their own instead. If a guide says every new character receives one automatically, it is describing an earlier version.
Choosing a location
- Stand at the position you want to protect and consider the reported square footprint, not just the location of the block itself.
- Leave room for the uncertain edge. If a neighboring base or public structure is close, test the boundary before committing valuable construction.
- Place the Land Claim Block from your hotbar.
- Have every intended collaborator join your alliance through the game’s multiplayer alliance controls. Being nearby or being on the same server is not enough; the player must be recognized as an ally for the claim rules to exempt them.
Verifying the result
Use a second, non-allied character or a trusted server test to attempt a harmless block placement near the suspected edge. Test more than one direction because the size interpretation and server modifications can produce a boundary different from a guide’s diagram. Never use a valuable wall as the first test surface.
Workstations and moving a base
The placing player can pick up workstations inside the claimed area by holding E on the object. This is useful when you are reorganizing a base or moving to a new location. It does not mean every object in the area can be collected, nor does it transfer ownership of the claim itself.
If you plan to abandon a site, remove movable equipment before destroying the claim. Breaking the block does not immediately make the location available for a fresh claim.

What happens when a claim is destroyed
Destroying a Land Claim Block leaves a forbidden border zone. The area cannot be reclaimed immediately, and the no-reclaim region includes a surrounding border rather than only the exact block location. No universal duration is established for that lockout, so do not promise a fixed waiting time. If you need to move a claim, plan for a gap and check the server before placing the replacement.

Decay modes
- 0 — slow/linear: durability declines gradually in a linear pattern.
- 1 — fast/exponential: durability falls more aggressively as the offline period progresses.
- 2 — none: the claim keeps full protection until the expiry condition is reached.
These modes affect the path to failure, not the ownership rule. An ally remains authorized, and a non-ally remains unauthorized, while the claim is active.
The special case of a zero durability modifier
Setting LandClaimOfflineDurabilityModifier to 0 is reported to make claimed blocks unbreakable rather than unprotected. An old, unconfirmed forum report says player damage may still apply under that configuration. Because that behavior is not established consistently, administrators should test it on a disposable server before using it for a public world and should document the result for players.
Understanding “keystone hardening”
Players often use “hardening” to mean the extra resistance a claim receives after logout. It is not a separate upgrade or crafting recipe. The relevant controls are the offline delay, offline durability modifier, decay mode and expiry time. Increasing resistance can deter raids during short absences, but a long expiry period or a non-decaying mode also changes the server’s balance by allowing abandoned bases to remain protected.
Because the default modifier has contradictory community interpretations, an administrator should measure it with controlled tests: record the block type, tool or damage source, owner online/offline state, delay elapsed and number of hits required. Publish the tested behavior rather than relying on the number alone.

“My friend cannot build in my base”
- Confirm the friend is allied with the claim owner, not merely grouped or listed as a server friend.
- Check that the friend is actually inside the claim footprint; an edge based on a different size interpretation can put part of the base outside protection.
- Make sure the claim is still active and has not been displaced by newer claims.
“The claim stopped protecting my old base”
- Check whether you placed more than the active limit; the oldest active claim is deactivated when a newer one is placed.
- Check your offline duration against
LandClaimExpiryTime. - Ask the administrator whether the server uses a custom decay mode, offline delay or durability modifier.
“I broke the block but cannot claim the replacement spot”
That is expected behavior when the post-destruction border is still in force. Move outside the forbidden zone or wait according to the server’s own rule; no universal lockout duration is established.
“The claim is much weaker than a guide promised”
Compare the guide’s game version with yours, then inspect all four claim-related settings. In particular, do not assume that a modifier of 4 has one universally understood multiplier. The server’s actual test result is more reliable than an old table.
Administrator deployment checklist
- Record the game version and the current
serverconfig.xmlbefore changing values. - Decide whether the reported 41-block size suits the map and verify its actual footprint in a test area.
- Choose an offline delay that matches your raid and protection rules.
- Choose a decay mode deliberately: linear decline, faster exponential decline or no decay until expiry.
- Set an expiry period that prevents abandoned claims from permanently sterilizing valuable land.
- Test a modifier of 0 separately if you are considering it; its interaction with player damage is not firmly established.
- Tell players how many active claims they may rely on and what happens to older claims when they place another.
Version and server caveats
Land-claim defaults are unusually volatile. The crafting change in version 1.0, conflicting interpretations of the size and durability values, and server-side overrides all make universal claims risky. Treat the settings table as a starting reference, then verify the live configuration and behavior in the exact game build and server where you play. That is the only dependable way to answer how large a particular claim is, how long offline protection lasts, and how much damage a raider must inflict.
